To think that people go luxury shopping every weekend?

I'm just watching Anne robin sons spending programme and there's a family who go shopping every weekend as their hobby, buying £150 hand bags.

I don't enjoy shopping so do it as little as possible, I can't afford to and it gives me a headache. But we are on the same income as the family on this programme.

Aibu to wonder if shopping is a big hobby for a lot of people on here? Do you like to shop for
Luxuries? How much a week do you spend?

I'm thinking bags, clothes, electronics, jewellery etc....

That family think they are way above their station, she is just picking up any old (minging) designer bag so she could show off to the camera!
The whole family come across very badly Confused

£190 for a pair of sunglasses for a 14yr old! Crikey!

But even the woman shopping in cheaper shops and all those bags of clothes in her house! She's not spending as much as the other family but she's still out shopping every weekend? Is this a normal pastime.... "Right kids, let's spend the weekend in town/Trafford centre etc" is this what a lot of parents say each weekend?

I hardly ever shop and certainly not as a past time. I do know people who spend most weekends as a family in Westfield or wherever. Each to their own.

Thelushinthepub · 26/08/2015 21:54

I think going to the shops for a day out is the sort of thing I only did regularly as a teenager with my friends. Now it's online, going to pick up Something specific or the very odd day including lunch out etc.

Bippidee · 26/08/2015 21:54

I'm watching agog. I watched last week's too.
I guess it is very much different strokes for different folks.
The editing is interesting.

We don't, we have breakfast in the Sainsbury's cafe, then buy comics and maybe toys, and clothes if they need them, all from Sainsbury's. I like doing it on a Saturday so they can choose. To me that's a big spend! Grin

sooperdooper · 26/08/2015 21:57

Ugh shopping as a hobby sounds awful, I'm not a fan of shopping for the sake of it and spending all day in the Trafford centre is my idea of hell!

Fantasyland · 26/08/2015 21:58

Who the hell buys a £600 phone for a Kid at school Shock

Some people have more money than sense.

FuryFowler · 26/08/2015 21:58

Yeah, actual I remember heading in to Chester every weekend as a teenager, we did a bit of shopping, mostly browsing and hanging about by the river looking at boys :)

We buy clothes etc every few months to replace worn out or grown out of clothes.

Shopping as a hobby is tedious and fills up the house with crap.

FuryFowler · 26/08/2015 21:59

But as an adult I can't think of anything worse than hanging about a city centre all day! And I certainly don't want to be that role model fort children

As long as you have the time, energy and money, I can't see the problem.

annandale · 26/08/2015 22:02

I would say charity shopping is a habit (not a hobby) of mine, but one I barely get a chance to do since having a child as I don't think children should see 'treat' shopping as a regular event. No difference really as I still fill the house with tat given half a chance, only it will be jigsaws with only one piece missing and polyester blouses from M&S circa 1994 that I have fooled myself I will wear at work.

elliejjtiny · 26/08/2015 22:02

I very rarely go out shopping, I do most of it online. I miss going to the actual shops sometimes but when I do it's so difficult going out with 5 dc, 2 of them in wheelchairs, that I'm exhausted and want to go home after 2 shops.

WipsGlitter · 26/08/2015 22:02

I was wondering the same. We might go shopping together at Christmas once.

That mum with the two girls came over as a total idiot. I'm sure they just bought the sunglasses because the cameras were there.

I think some parents are just really weak and can't say no. DS7 wants an iPod touch even though he doesn't know what they're for just because some other kids have them. I judge those parents for giving in to pester power.

fuzzpig · 26/08/2015 22:04

I don't go shopping much but I spend a ridiculous amount of time online browsing, I have huge amazon wishlists. I'm not into clothes and that sort of thing so I wouldn't just go to town to shop unless I needed something. My big addiction is board games, and we also have a vast DVD collection. There are a few shops we head to when we are in that town (eg a brilliant indie game shop) but our spends are budgeted - we have 'pocket money' because we have very little disposable income, and it means we can still get treats without blowing the budget.

FuckyNell · 26/08/2015 22:07

I love shopping. My family call me Mrs John Lewis Grin

fuzzpig · 26/08/2015 22:07

I did go through a phase when the DCs were really little of just shopping though. I was really lonely (we'd just moved area and I knew nobody so when DH was working I felt isolated) so would often just go into town, I really liked buying toys and clothes for the DCs. Got that under control thankfully, I didn't spend a whole lot really but it was really unhealthy.

Gartenzwerg · 26/08/2015 22:09

I suspect that there are self esteem issues coming into play with those people. Either that or they are vacuous arses.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 26/08/2015 22:10

fuzzpig I do this too and am really trying hard to stop. Always things for the DC, never for me. They really, really don't need anything though so no idea why I do it!

waitaminutenow · 26/08/2015 22:11

I have to admit I do like shopping but not every weekend. But I buy quality more than quantity. I buy things online a lot too,try them at home and then send them back, it saves so much more time.

comfybigduvet · 26/08/2015 22:12

I used to. Not now so much.

Pidapie · 26/08/2015 22:14

My idea of luxury shopping is to buy a steak (in Sainsbury's or wherever) and cook steak and chips for dinner. I do not go shopping as a hobby, only as a necessity (which I do enjoy doing, but can't afford doing). I think it's a little bit crazy, what you are describing.
