Is this appropriate in a dentist waiting room?

I took my DS (8) and DD (6) for a dental check up this morning. The usual receptionist was there who I have always found very rude and abrupt. Luckily, we didn't have to wait long but as we were waiting, the TV was blasting out Jeremy bloody Kyle! It was on a delightful subject about STDs. My two were fairly oblivious as I made sure they sat away from it and I was chatting with them constantly, but I'm sure they picked up the odd thing. I looked at the receptionist and said perhaps this wasn't the most appropriate channel in a family waiting room but she ignored me. As soon as I saw the dentist I told him my concerns and he said he'd look into it though didn't seem too bothered. Am I being precious? I'm no prude and may have Matthew Wright on in front of them at times which isn't age appropriate. But Jeremy Vile? I'm still annoyed I had to look at his face, let alone subject my DC to him. Should I chase it up further or leave it?

I work in a similar kind of place and I switch JK off. Not appropriate for children, IMO

ElderlyKoreanLady · 26/08/2015 19:24

YABU I'm afraid. It's not ideal but it's daytime TV so they're not really doing anything wrong.

Macadaamia · 26/08/2015 19:25

Er. I'd leave it. It's just a waiting room, for everyone, not so much a family waiting room

AuntyMag10 · 26/08/2015 19:25

I wouldn't like it around kids, however it is daytime TV.

3littlefrogs · 26/08/2015 19:26

Personally I would be finding another dentist.

If their standards are so low in their waiting area goodness knows what else is questionable.

Having said that, the hospital I used to work in had Jeremy Kyle on a big screen in the pharmacy waiting area. I don't think they do any more though.

ginmakesitallok · 26/08/2015 19:26

I would have asked the receptionist to change channel

Wishful80smontage · 26/08/2015 19:26

I don't think its apropriate And if she's that rude I'd be finding another dentist and telling them why.

Macadaamia · 26/08/2015 19:26

Would sky news be better? Where I work that's what we have on

Shootings in the U.S. Today. Would you prefer that?

Or do you think every should be subjected to mindless cartoons?

Bakeoffcake · 26/08/2015 19:27

Very inappropriate. Why do they need a TV on anyway? My dentist has nice relaxing music on.

But I don't know what you can do about it, presumably they don't have to turn it off, they could just tell you to go elsewhere if you dont like it.

googoodolly · 26/08/2015 19:28

I don't think they're doing anything wrong by showing daytime TV, tbh.

3littlefrogs · 26/08/2015 19:29

I don't think is necessary to have TV everywhere.

What is wrong with a magazine or a book?

KurriKurri · 26/08/2015 19:29

Why on earth was there a telly in a dentist waiting room?

Mine has a tank full of tropical fish, a loop tape of Andrew Lloyd Webber hits, and some well thumbed copies of The Lady and Yachting Monthly c. 1984.

And that is exactly how it should be.

fastdaytears · 26/08/2015 19:29

Can you imagine getting really into a story and then getting called in just before the big paternity test reveal? For that reason along YANBU

Ham69 · 26/08/2015 19:33

Yes, macadamia, shootings and mindless cartoons instead Hmm
Thanks everyone for such quick responses. I guess I am being unreasonable then. I should have walked them into the corridor maybe as I don't want them in that kind of environment. JK makes me so angry and the subjects really are vile and aggressive. I'll let it go now!

Fastdays????

pretend · 26/08/2015 19:34

I'd have complained. It's not appropriate and it's shit

MackerelOfFact · 26/08/2015 19:36

It's being broadcast on TV perfectly legally. I don't see how they can vet the content of every show before they put it on.

"If their standards are so low in their waiting area goodness knows what else is questionable"

I'm pretty sure having Jeremy Kyle on in the waiting room isn't going to be a CQC issue. Grin

AnyFucker · 26/08/2015 19:36

actually, JK is screened at a time when kids old enough to be impressionable are normally at school

and in the holidays, it's parental choice (usually) if you let them watch it

so not really as simple as "well it's just daytime tv"

Macadaamia · 26/08/2015 19:37

Well what would you prefer??

Life doesn't revolve around kids!

Ham69 · 26/08/2015 19:38

Fastdays Grin

Yeah, it's tricky as it is pre-watershed and all that. But having said that I worked as a dental receptionist for five years, and we used to flick through the magazines and everything to check there wasn't anything too risqué to have out with small children about. We didn't have a TV thank goodness.

So although it's not a black-and-white issue, I have to say if I was the receptionist there I'd have swiftly changed the channel when it came on, just like we used to tip "TEN SECRETS TO GREAT ORAL SEX" specials into the recycling. I think you were right to bring it up, but sensible not to go in all-guns blazing!

JoyceDivision · 26/08/2015 19:41

YANBU... what is there in a JK show that is suitable for children?

It doesn't have tobe TV for children... just not content about who's the baby father / on drugs / had sex withtheir ex etc.

magazines from 1995 and a fishtank is our waitoing room!

AddyRonDak · 26/08/2015 19:43

You should definitely mention the rude receptionist next time.
I would also have complained about JK being on in the waiting room. It's not supposed to rival the ambience of the local pub, FFS.

I used to go to a lovely Dental Surgery before we moved.
Posh waiting area, fab mags - I used to arrive extra early for my appointment just so I had time to read them. Very helpful receptionist and the best bit...sexy dentist too!
Youngish chap with very twinkly blue eyes.
I used to look forward to my 6 month check ups. Grin

Ham69 · 26/08/2015 19:44

I agree Kirri kirri My DCs childhood memories are going to be grim!
Macadaamia sorry, can't be arsed.
