Is this appropriate in a dentist waiting room?

I took my DS (8) and DD (6) for a dental check up this morning. The usual receptionist was there who I have always found very rude and abrupt. Luckily, we didn't have to wait long but as we were waiting, the TV was blasting out Jeremy bloody Kyle! It was on a delightful subject about STDs. My two were fairly oblivious as I made sure they sat away from it and I was chatting with them constantly, but I'm sure they picked up the odd thing. I looked at the receptionist and said perhaps this wasn't the most appropriate channel in a family waiting room but she ignored me. As soon as I saw the dentist I told him my concerns and he said he'd look into it though didn't seem too bothered. Am I being precious? I'm no prude and may have Matthew Wright on in front of them at times which isn't age appropriate. But Jeremy Vile? I'm still annoyed I had to look at his face, let alone subject my DC to him. Should I chase it up further or leave it?

Never mind the kids, adults shouldn't be subjected to that rubbish either Hmm

EmeraldKitten · 26/08/2015 19:52

She ignored you? Are you sure she heared?

That really boils my piss. Why didn't you pull her up on it?

Anyway...yanbu, it is inappropriate regardless of being pre-watershed.

Verbena37 · 26/08/2015 19:53

You don't get TVs in hospital waiting rooms (other than a TV perhaps in a paediatric outpatients clinic) or in GP surgeries and I see NHS dentist waiting rooms as the same. I don't think they need a tele....other than those factual ones spurting dental or health info....which would, IMO, be ok.

fastdaytears · 26/08/2015 20:03

Actually it's a serious point about why TVs are needed at all. I find noise really horrible when I'm already anxious so having JK blaring out at me would be my worst nightmare.
Also, I spent a weekend in A&E a few months ago and the waiting room had some shopping channel nonsense on loop. I came so close to buying on of those expanding hose things. Nearly cracked in Homebase at the weekend. It's made its way into my subconscious.

Fluffy24 · 26/08/2015 20:10

The maternity outpatient dept at our local hospital had a TV and had a music channel blaring. Not really what you need when waiting to be seen after immediate referral by midwife. Hmm

ThatWasThat · 26/08/2015 20:12

Yanbu. Unreasonable to expose anyone to that programme.

fastdaytears · 26/08/2015 20:13

Fluffy Flowers horrible! I'd go nuts about that, though I guess not really the time.

llhj · 26/08/2015 20:16

Well, the rudeness is completely inappropriate when (I presume) you politely raised a not ludicrously outrageous concern. I'd be changing dentists to be honest. Part of a receptionist's job description is to be personable and helpful.

Fluffy24 · 26/08/2015 20:18

Nippy receptionists seem to be the norm at my dentist.

Seriouslyffs · 26/08/2015 20:21

It's difficult. I hate daytime TV and would never voluntarily watch it. But it's useful to have some noise in a medical waiting room for privacy. Music is problematic because classical stresses some people, pop others.
My GP has a special channel with general health advice.

EmeraldKitten · 26/08/2015 20:21

I don't really see the problem with that -Fluffy tbf. Would it have been better for them to maintain a solemn hush at all times? And tbh I doubt that it was 'blaring'.

Fluffy24 · 26/08/2015 20:28

I wasn't feeling very well at the time and it was too loud (not just background music), the waiting room was packed so couldn't chose anywhere else to sit so was sat about 3 feet away from it, and though I asked the receptionist if it would be a while till I was seen could I go and walk about a bit in the corridor outside she said no I had to wait there.

BlueBananas · 26/08/2015 20:29

YABU, it might not r your choice but it is daytime tv, you can't expect the receptionists to turn it to a different channel every time a patient comes in in case they might prefer something else
Although I agree a tv isn't necessary at all

Had to take DS(6) to the OOH at the hospital a few weeks ago at around 11pm and there was a huge tv with a horror film on! I asked them to turn it off and they said they didn't have the remote for it so they couldn't Hmm

Fluffy24 · 26/08/2015 20:29

The idea of the music TV in waiting room wasn't the issue but the volume!

CherylTunt · 26/08/2015 20:30

Last time I went with the DC there was a rolling 24-hour news channel on, covering some poor person that had been beheaded Sad

Didn't really want to have that conversation with a 6yo and a 9yo Hmm

Agree no need for TVs in waiting rooms at all, really.

Although when I went private for orthodontic treatment several years ago they had a TV angled above the chair, showing a wonderfully soothing documentary about the Arctic. That was nice Grin. Helped distract from the terror Blush

TattyDevine · 26/08/2015 20:33

People on Jeremy Kyle seem to have very few teeth, so perhaps he was trying to advertise his services in a round about kind of way

Mrsmorton · 26/08/2015 20:33

You would be amazed how many patients want a TV in the waiting room. You honestly cannot win in this respect if you're A medical/dental practice.

Rachel0Greep · 26/08/2015 20:41

My dentist has ancient magazines, and usually a radio playing. I'm jealous of those whose waiting room has a fish tank Grin,
There is a medical appointment I have to attend monthly, and as soon as Jeremy Vile appears on the tv in the waiting room, the receptionist grabs the remote, and switches to another channel. I would hate if it was left on, all that screaming and shouting, a lot of it from him. Ugh.

Wishful80smontage · 26/08/2015 20:55

If the telly must be on 'homes under the hammer' is the obvious choice JK is vile

fastdaytears · 26/08/2015 20:56

I bloody love Homes Under the Hammer

BlueBananas · 26/08/2015 20:57

My DP was on Homes under the Hammer once Grin

BikeRunSki · 26/08/2015 21:00

^Why on earth was there a telly in a dentist waiting room?

Mine has a tank full of tropical fish, a loop tape of Andrew Lloyd Webber hits, and some well thumbed copies of The Lady and Yachting Monthly c. 1984.

And that is exactly how it should be.^

Purplepoodle · 26/08/2015 21:02

No i HATE my kids watching JK. I'm trying to teach them not to scream in each others faces ect - bit hard to explain when grown adults are showing such behaviours

fastdaytears · 26/08/2015 21:02

Blue no WAY. Does he do autographs?
