Is this appropriate in a dentist waiting room?

I took my DS (8) and DD (6) for a dental check up this morning. The usual receptionist was there who I have always found very rude and abrupt. Luckily, we didn't have to wait long but as we were waiting, the TV was blasting out Jeremy bloody Kyle! It was on a delightful subject about STDs. My two were fairly oblivious as I made sure they sat away from it and I was chatting with them constantly, but I'm sure they picked up the odd thing. I looked at the receptionist and said perhaps this wasn't the most appropriate channel in a family waiting room but she ignored me. As soon as I saw the dentist I told him my concerns and he said he'd look into it though didn't seem too bothered. Am I being precious? I'm no prude and may have Matthew Wright on in front of them at times which isn't age appropriate. But Jeremy Vile? I'm still annoyed I had to look at his face, let alone subject my DC to him. Should I chase it up further or leave it?

YANBU.

A good dentist wouldn't have a telly in the first place

BlueBananas · 26/08/2015 21:05

Oh God fastday I'd never hear the end of it, he tells everyone he ever meets, thinks he's some sort of local celebrity Hmm

Another Homes Under The Hammer fan here! If only I'd had the balls to grab the remote and turn over!

YANBU. JK isn't appropriate for a waiting room. Our dentist has nothing but posters and a couple of leaflets.

AnotherTimeMaybe · 26/08/2015 21:31

YANBU, I love JK (not the show but him!) but no way I would want DCs to watch that crap!
The fact that it's daytime tv doesn't say much! There are loads of inappropriate (for a child) programmes on daytime tv. It might not babestation but still not ok for children this age

MackerelOfFact · 26/08/2015 21:36

For future reference, you can buy universal remote control keyring that can turn off most TVs.Grin

Particulary entertaining at in places with lots of large screens, such as shopping centres or airports. Ahem. Not that I'd know. Blush

(Apologies to anyone at Dublin airport circa October 2005 who was trying to find out critical information about their flight. Sorry about that. I didn't think it would actually work.)

TV in our dentist's waiting room either shows the news channel or information about cosmetic dentistry with some pretty gruesome images Hmm.

They ABU by showing JK at all. Not sure why it even makes it on to daytime tv.
Our GP surgery waiting room used to have a large notice board full of posters advertising things such as abortion clinics, std clinics, rape counselling to name but a few. DS was a very early reader and would read out the posters and ask questions much to the amusement of the other patients Blush
Now we have a new doctors surgery and it is devoid of all such clutter. They play Radio 2 over the speakers and have a few Land Rover magazines to read.

They quite often have it on in my local Wacky warehouse. Usually muted with subtitles but not always.

Completely agree with mackeral.
"If their standards are so low in their waiting area goodness knows what else is questionable"
Really??? Grin

It's daytime viewing so why shouldnt they have it on? Yes it is on when they would be at school but it is still on in the school holidays and the weekends so children can see it.
You also dont know if people were watching that chanel before you got there.

Verbena37 all the hospitals that i have been to have tvs and there are 3 near me. I thank my lucky stars as i am there a lot and it's usually a long wait so i appreciate them having tvs.
