Just moved into our new house. Cleaned the carpets using the rug doctor on Tuesday and the living room has smelt of what I can only describe as sweaty feet ever since. Its been like this for days. It's driving me totally crazy. how do I get rid of this smell. Tried plug in and spray air fresheners, keeping the windows open, having the heating on, shake n vac and baking soda (but not a lot yet, waiting for DH to get home with some more) arrgghhh!

I think wetting the carpet has activated years of doggy smells in the carpet or underlay or both tbh. Is it actually dry now? If so then it might be worth one more go at cleaning it using a deodoriser. Consider using a professional - their equipment and detergents are far stronger than anything you can hire or buy for domestic use.

I think you may need to replace the carpet. We had a dog who was prone to having accidents as he was ancient. I thoroughly cleaned up every time. After he died I did replace the carpet - it was more about knowing what had gone on as there were no visible signs. I took it to the tip and it honestly did not smell so it very much depends how thorough any cleaning is.

One option is to lift the carpet, and paint the floorboards underneath, a wood primer should do it, it will seal the floorboards, put a couple of coats on, if you are desperate take out the floorbards and paint both sides, or use a little brush down the side. Paint will seal the smell in. Then wash the carpet both sides. Not sure what underlays are made of but they will need dealing with too. Keep it all lifted whilst drying to prevent mould. Possible to get new bit of underlay just for that area, it's cheaper.

Get an extension lead and steam iron and an old towel cover the smelly bit of the carpet with the towel and steam steam steam....do this for at least 15 minutes ...The steam will kill any bacteria....be very careful....do not take the iron off the towel or you will burn your carpet. After 15 minutes just iron over the towel to dry. Then spray with febreze or any nice smelling deodoriser . Safely remove the iron and towel before this. Steam is a fantastic germ killer. Hope this helps. Stay safe.

Get neutrodol air freshener or oust air freshener they not only fragrance the air , they tackle and kill bacteria in the air that causes odours...Saintsbury's sells both

I would chalk this up to a pain in the ass and get rid. Put down a new carpet and this will all go away. Money well spent.
