To think that Coronation Street is complete and utter shit this days?

I've watched it all my life, and although it's had its ups and downs I don't think it's ever been as bad as it is now. Badly written "ishooo" lead storylines, poorly developed and one dimensional characters, clunky dialogue and appalling acting. Don't get me started on their recent obsession with stunt casting random celebrities, I don't think I've ever seen acting as bad as Sarah Hardings the other week, we now have Paddy McGuiness doing a guest stint and we have Shayne Ward to look forward to in the next few weeks. Sarah Harding didn't even audition for her role ffs, it makes a mockery of the whole thing,

I'm not sure why I even bother watching anymore? I presume it's because of habit and familiarity, but I reallt hanker after the old days. The humour, the great strong female Characters. Where did it all go wrong?

wtf was going on with that monk ?

Rhine · 20/08/2015 20:37

Yes, WTF was that all about? In fact the whole camping storyline is a bag of wank isn't it?

AnyFucker · 20/08/2015 20:45

yup

ICanSeeForMiles · 20/08/2015 20:49

YANBU. I stopped watching it about 6 months ago because it was shit.

Attilathehan · 20/08/2015 20:49

YANBU.

It's so incredibly boring.

AnguaResurgam · 20/08/2015 20:50

I did see it this evening. But not bothered if I miss it these days. I've been watching for years, but now it's more of a case of checking in to see if it's improved.

Recent spoilers I've seen suggest it'll be getting worse, not better.

LikeIcan · 20/08/2015 20:51

Yanbu - I actually prefer Hollyoaks now, & that's saying something!

thecatsarecrazy · 20/08/2015 22:03

When I was growing up I used to watch Corry with my mum and watched when I left home. My dh cant stand it or eastenders so I gave up on them both a couple of years ago. They both became so depressing.

borisgudanov · 21/08/2015 01:05

If you got River City on your TV you'd be begging for Corrie, right enough.

TheCatsFlaps · 21/08/2015 01:13

I can't stand it and have never been able to watch more than a few minutes. I think because there's higher quality content available now, it dials the shite up to 11 on the Corrie dial.

Pullingpants · 21/08/2015 01:26

Rhine. I grew up on Corrie. As a northern bird in the 60's it was one of the only things on. But it was better in those days. I agree with you I lost the faith when Emily went up the tree on the Red Rec -- No hope for it really

HirplesWithHaggis · 21/08/2015 02:08

My 25 yo ds happened to catch tonight's episode with me. (He doesn't watch often, I do) He fell about laughing at the monk, and said, "WTF were the scriptwriters on?"

So there is some sort of amusement value...

swimmerforlife · 21/08/2015 03:17

YANBU, another one who grew up watching it (can remember stuff from the early 90s onwards) but I still watch it through habit though. But acting is absolutely atrocious (bar a few exceptions) and am so sick of the poorly written storylines and endless stunts. I still haven't gotten over how badly written the fire storyline was a few months ago, why the fuck did Kal not just jump?! Felt like a century he was up on the balcony.

I gave up on Home and Away too a few years ago, that turned to utter shit as well.

Tbh I think all soaps have had their day now, just repetitive storylines and endless affairs.

BastardGoDarkly · 21/08/2015 03:36

With such fantastic series on Netflix I've given up on the soaps too, and its funny because when I see then now it's almost laughable!

Dev from corrie is shocking! As are the new Asian family, and well, most of them really, fizz in particular.

I missed Blanche :(

sugartees · 21/08/2015 03:48

YANBU - haven't watched properly in years but DM is in to it so caught tonight's episode complete with TV's Paddy McGuiness.

I think my 4 yr old would find it compulsive viewing but I thought it was all a bit like a bad sitcom.

littlejohnnydory · 21/08/2015 09:02

YANBU. I watched it for years and used to look forward to it. I ditched it a couple of years ago because it is shit. It used to be funny, with clever dialogue - now ridiculous. The thing that finally did it for me was that they took a stupid length of time (over a year) to resolve storylines, by which time I'd stopped caring.

scarlets · 21/08/2015 09:06

The Sarah Harding thing was an insult to viewers.

The mother/daughter combo that look the same age is just freaky.

MsVestibule · 21/08/2015 09:10

YANBU. I watched every episode from the late 80s until about six months ago. This includes having two babies 20 months apart - still made sure I was sitting down at 7.30 three times a week.

I then thought 'Why am I spending 2.5 hours a week watching this rubbish?', went cold turkey and haven't missed it at all.

Dontloookbackinanger · 21/08/2015 09:14

YANBU. I watched it for nearly 20 years then stopped last year. The unrealistic and overly sensational storylines and hammed acting did it for me.

floppyjogger · 21/08/2015 09:17

I only dip in and out nowadays when nothing else in on because of the shitty story lines and horrendous acting.

I can remember the days when it was far more edgy with the mike/Ken/Deirdre triangle and then the Alan Bradley and Rita story line but now its like a pantomime with bad acting that reminds me of a terrible Rentaghost episode from the early 80s. Are we supposed to hiss when Tracey enters the scene and does the same thing over and over again with a different bloke.

Its a shame that Eastenders has gone in exactly the same way.

I am a fan of Emmerdale, I get stressed watching it so i'm guessing that must mean i do care whats happening!Thank god Jai got his comeuppance in the end Grin

BrianCoxReborn · 21/08/2015 09:20

Until recently I would record the week and then binge.watch on a Saturday morning.

Nice and easy viewing.

The last few months I've found myself just watching the last episode on a.Friday and finding out everything I need to know about the storyline.from there.

Now, I cba to even do that.

Sarah Harding acts like a 5 yo in a school play.

Wishful80smontage · 21/08/2015 09:29

Its been utterly dire lately really really shit :( that's coming from a massive corrie fan so I take no pleasure in saying that. Massive changes needed.
I've only watched corrie for last few years not had time to keep up with anything else but started watching emmerdale a few weeks back its great really hooked, good characters, storylines, dialogue I'm genuinely interested in whats going to happen next whereas corrie feels like an endurance test ATM :(

Rhine · 21/08/2015 09:33

Sarah and Bethany do look the same age, but I put that down to the fact Sarah was only 13 when she had her. Tina O'Brien has always looked a lot younger than she is, she is actually in her early 30's but only looks about 24. The girl playing Bethany is too old, and why does she sound like a Northerner when she lived most of her life in Italy?

The best actors in Corrie are Carla, Kylie and Leanne and none of them are being used to their full potential.

On a side note Eastenders isn't much better. I wouldnt be at all surprised to see either of them axed in the next few years.

Crinkle77 · 21/08/2015 09:39

You're right. I can't bear that Callum storyline. I hate all gangster/drug dealer related storylines that seem to feature in the soaps at the moment - they are boring. Emmerdale has gone awful too. It started with the introduction of Moira's extended family. I just haven't taken to that lot at all.

ApplesinmyPocket · 21/08/2015 09:41

I stopped watching it a year ago after many years of 'everything stops at 7.30 for Corrie'. I was just so tired of ridiculous 'plots', villains, explosions, gangs, repeated storylines (child abductions!) that weren't great the first time round. I haven't missed it one bit, but DD updates me if she thinks anything interesting is going on (not much from the sound of it.)

I hope it's still got a touch of what made Corrie great - the humour of characters such as Norris and much-missed Blanche - but for what I really like, family drama, bake shows, village life, I've defected to the Archers which is much more my kind of thing these days.
