To think that Coronation Street is complete and utter shit this days?

I've watched it all my life, and although it's had its ups and downs I don't think it's ever been as bad as it is now. Badly written "ishooo" lead storylines, poorly developed and one dimensional characters, clunky dialogue and appalling acting. Don't get me started on their recent obsession with stunt casting random celebrities, I don't think I've ever seen acting as bad as Sarah Hardings the other week, we now have Paddy McGuiness doing a guest stint and we have Shayne Ward to look forward to in the next few weeks. Sarah Harding didn't even audition for her role ffs, it makes a mockery of the whole thing,

I'm not sure why I even bother watching anymore? I presume it's because of habit and familiarity, but I reallt hanker after the old days. The humour, the great strong female Characters. Where did it all go wrong?

"reminds me of a terrible Rentaghost episode from the early 80s"

That's unfair to Audrey!

Lj8893 · 21/08/2015 09:49

I've only just realised that Roberts wife was Sarah Harding! She was shit!

Wishful80smontage · 21/08/2015 12:27

I don't think shane ward will be much better after seeing the adverts :(
They really need to focus on the strengths of the cast they have Sally, Leanne and Liz are all fab but need the stories- the recent story with liz's brewery boyf was good and could have been made more of whereas others stories like Callan sagas have gone on for months on end.

Rachel0Greep · 21/08/2015 13:33

YANBU. Sad to see the low it has gone to, total rubbish now.

elbowsdontsing2 · 21/08/2015 14:25

wheres lilly, she aint been seen for monthe. the whole platt family go out with no mention of whose looking after lilly.
alya is pregnant with jasons baby but all thats been forgotten now she wants to buy the factory, they need to sack the writers and get some one new in before it goes the same way as brookside

Lj8893 · 21/08/2015 14:42

Is Ayla actually pregnant? I didn't think we saw or heard what the test said.

ImperialBlether · 21/08/2015 14:47

I hardly ever watch it now, but I love the opportunity a soap has to tell the story of ordinary people over a long period of time.

What the hell was the monk doing? Why throw him into the mix? Is he going to be in it again? If not, why bother having him in in the first place?

Virtually everyone in that street has been in prison and not for small crimes, either. And they always manage to get jobs without training for them (anyone remember when Gail got a job as a medical receptionist?) And if they don't seem to have work, they can still drink tea in the café, even though their house is on the same street and they can still go to the pub. They never ever complain about being broke.

x2boys · 21/08/2015 15:06

and martin was the only nurse in wetherfield general? wether it was Aand E Somebody was having an operation ,somebody was having a baby ,somebody had mental healthissues you could gurantee martin would be there looking concernedConfused

x2boys · 21/08/2015 15:07

TBF I havent really watched corrie in yrs i just catch ten minutes now and then!

TracyBarlow · 21/08/2015 15:11

I also thought WTF when I saw the monk.

It's such a bloody shame. I loved Corrie and it's wonderful, storing northern women. It has gone to complete shite recently.

As if a big Salford drug dealer would have some dumpy little side-kick doing his bidding.

Alya and her family are terrible and that Kal death storyline was terrible. If your choice is between burning to death or jumping off a balcony from one story up, just jump off the fucking balcony.

It wasn't so long ago they had some amazing characters - Becky, Karen et al. And the comic writing was much better a couple of years ago for characters like Eileen, Norris, Sally and Liz McDonald. They obviously need a really good clear out in terms of writers.

DameDancealot · 21/08/2015 15:12

I still watch it but know what you mean, I tend to duck in and out while an episode is on

Rhine · 21/08/2015 15:32

The humour is the biggest loss to the show. Even during dark storylines they would drop in some great one liners. Highlights include Gail's "oh look, here come the rest of the village people" when Sarah found out that Todd was gay, Sally's "I took her to the Trafford Centre" when she found out that Kevin had been having an affair with Molly and Mrs Fishwicks "you buried my son under a knicker factory" to John Stape when he confused to having murdered her son.

When the try to do humour now it always feels so forced and contrived, it doesn't flow organically like it used. Its down to really poor writing that anything else, but I really miss Blanche and I will miss Deidre too, harping on about her stuffed marrow. The Barlow house was always hilarious, and you could tell that Ken, Deidre, Tracy and Peter all genuninely got on really well in real life. The chemistry was just right.

I miss old Corrie Sad

lovelychops · 21/08/2015 15:45

So much of it is down to the appalling writing. The dialogue is so clunky and forced. Really unrealistic.

But, they could do with a massive cull of dreadful actors. My list would be -
Tracy and her pantomime villain ways
Maria
Andrea jazz hands
The God awful Simon
Ditto Ken
Sophie, Kevin
Plus Rita & Emily. I don't care if they're an institution they can't act !

I don't know why I'm bothered anyway I put it on then find myself wandering off...

Wishful80smontage · 21/08/2015 17:35

Yy for a cull- first to go would be the boss for me since he's took over its gone downhill- I know one person can't be held responsible for everything but corrie needs a shake up from top to bottom.
Then: Anna
Gary
Faye
Chesney
Simon
Callam
Bethany
Sophie
Alya's grandparents
Less screen time for the platts in general and fiz/Tyrone.
More screen time for sally, tim, liz, Leanne, Steve (without michelle) Eileen, Norris, factory workers.
It needs new characters played by actors rather than pop idol contestants- seen Nicola Stevenson is joining emmerdale she would have been great on corrie. I think they could do more with claire king than they are.
Its struggling completely.

vienna1981 · 21/08/2015 20:34

I haven't watched it since the days when it was only on twice a week. Monday and Wednesday at 7.30pm, stupid football permitting. Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner were the Street battleaxe and femme fatale. Are they still in it ?

EdithWeston · 21/08/2015 20:37

Sadly no (I remember both)

But Ken Barlow is still going strong.

EdithWeston · 21/08/2015 20:39

Longest running current female character is Emily Bishop, runner up Rita

movpov · 21/08/2015 21:45

I've watched this all my life, and my mum has watched it from the very beginning but even she's getting fed up with it. I just can't be bothered with it any more - it has been going downhill for some time but the storylines are getting worse, they drag out for ages (like the Callum storyline) and are poorly acted. They keep bringing back old characters like Jenny Bradley recently, who were irritating as hell the first time round so not likely to be any less so now. (Eastenders is also really bad for doing this). The Tracy/Tony storyline did my head in with them constantly pawing at each other, whoever told Les Dennis he could act needs a serious talking to and Sally & Gail are just so irritating, as is Fizz with that screeching voice. The storyline that has let Tracy away with being responsible for the fire starting is very unsatisfactory; by revealing the truth they could have had a massive showdown between her and Carla but they have missed an opportunity there; it's like the story has been left hanging. The annoying thing is that when there is a really big storyline they can do it really well, like the tram crash a few years ago, but the rest has just become utter rubbish. Sorry to say it but I think it's had its day.

comfybigduvet · 21/08/2015 21:52

It's just so dull. The kylie storyline is so stupid. David chucked her out, then spent six months looking for her, during which time there's a stupid and pointless storyline involving Callum who is as scary as Scooby Doo. Couldn't Kylie have just visited her sister for a bit?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/08/2015 22:02

Every single man on corrie either looks like a potato or is decidedly camp. Surely they can find some good looking northern working class actors? Shane Ward is noticeably camp. That Callum character is practically Larry Grayson.

Wishful80smontage · 21/08/2015 22:10

Forgot less Dennis add him to my cull list.
I don't mind them bringing old characters back its worked with Liz and Todd. Would love to see Becky or Karen back for a bit not likely to happen though they've both done so well since leaving. TBF the way it is Les and Janice Battersby coming back would be dream casting in comparison to Shane ward and sarah Harding.

TheExMotherInLaw · 21/08/2015 22:12

I stopped watching it when Martha Longhurst died in the snug of the Rovers Return

PunkrockerGirl · 21/08/2015 22:25

I'd love to see Karen and Becky back too.
I miss Peter Barlow too. I think he and Carla were really good together.
Would like to see more of Steve, Norris, Sally, Tim and Beth because of their comedy input.
Andrea can't leave soon enough for me.

FeelsLikeHome123 · 21/08/2015 22:41

Yanbu, it has become so dreary. I have watched it for over 30 years and stopped recently. I miss Blanche and her one liners, Norris and Mary banter, Jack and Vera, Silvia, Roy & Hayley relationship. The soap is definitely a little duller without them Sad.

Lj8893 · 21/08/2015 23:01

Yep, as predicted, Shane ward was crap.

I miss Becky, she was bloody fab!
