To ask what we're supposed to do if we're on the list?

I tried to login yesterday, couldn't, saw threads on this and changed password. Now I'm on the list... apparently that means they have got my current password and I should change again? Or does it mean they had my last password?
I'm not on twitter plus everyone's being told not to link to the page - what am I supposed to do?

Plus I'm not clueless about web security, don't mind hugely someone has access to my mn details as irrelevent elsewhere/to my life iyswim... and have malware scanners etc. So no insults please.

But what are we supposed to do if we're on the list?

I dont know if I'm on the list, but all I've done is change any passwords I had on other sites that were the same as my old mumsnet password.

LurkingHusband · 19/08/2015 11:27

Do you use the same password for other sites ? If so, change it now.

If not, then continue as before, assuming "as before" meant you were already wary of phishing scams.

cardibach · 19/08/2015 11:30

Actually, since all of hats on the list is the mums net NN and password, I don't think there is any risk is there? I've done the password change anyway and don't use the MN password for anything else anyway.

UrethraFranklin1 · 19/08/2015 11:47

Nothing. They have your mn name (which we all have) and your old password, which you've now changed.
Unless you use the same password on other sites (in which case change it now) then you're fine.

BreadPitt · 19/08/2015 12:18

I was on the list. Personally I've now set up a forum only email, changed password (though I only used it here anyway I've changed all my passwords) and name changed.

Belt and braces approach can't hurt.

Shutthatdoor · 19/08/2015 12:24

There than what others have said, maybe NC if you want to.

Collaborate · 19/08/2015 13:00

I found a link to the list so could see my name was on it, and it was the PW I used before I changed it yesterday.

icelollycraving · 19/08/2015 13:03

How do you know if you're on the list?

AuntieStella · 19/08/2015 13:05

MNHQ are emailing all those on the list.

That email contains the info you're asking for.

If you've not received it, try checking spam folder. Or old email account you first signed up with. Still nothing, then I suppose you'll need to email MNHQ.

dexter73 · 19/08/2015 13:07

I changed my password, have a forum only email, deleted all my pm's and photos and changed my name and date of birth on my profile. I am now Jane Doe with a birth date of 1/1/00!

AuntieStella · 19/08/2015 13:07

"How do you know if you're on the list?"

Alphabetical list on

this thread in four long posts a bit after 09:00 this morning.

Shutthatdoor · 19/08/2015 13:09

How do you know if you're on the list?

If you go to the chat thread 'am I on the list' on page 11/12 ish there is a list in alphabetical order of usernames affected.

icelollycraving · 19/08/2015 13:14

Ok,I'm on it & have had hundreds & hundreds of junk mail over the last few days. I've changed my password,is there anything else?

ilovesooty · 19/08/2015 14:00

I think you're supposed to flap and cry and demand MN is shut down immediately.

In practice as long as you tighten up security and change duplicated passwords I doubt if you need to do anything else.

WhamBamSpam · 19/08/2015 14:13

What's the logic of changing your password on other sites?

I was on the list and I have changed my MN password but it's a password that I use for other things too but not my email address. Can someone explain to non techy me why I'm should change my password on other sites?

WhamBamSpam · 19/08/2015 14:14

Logic is the wrong word. What's the reason?
Thanks.

icelollycraving · 19/08/2015 14:15

If you use the same passwords then the hacker may be able to hack those accounts too.

WhamBamSpam · 19/08/2015 14:25

Bear with me, I'm not internet savvy at all. but so what if he can hack other (non financial) accounts? What can he do?

icelollycraving · 19/08/2015 14:34

I assume if he was feeling spiteful he could post offensive stuff under your name. He could guess some info about you.

icelollycraving · 19/08/2015 14:36

I just had the email from mnhq. I actually feel a bit oddly unsettled about the whole thing.

ChristineDePisan · 19/08/2015 14:40

There's the possibility that if the hacker had your username and password they could have logged in as you and looked in your profile to get your email address. They could then try the email address and password in other sites to see if that would gain them access. So if you have used the same or similar password for other sites, then it would be v sensible to change them now.

And of course to be extra vigilant about suspicious activity on your online accounts, and to report any concerns asap

Narp · 19/08/2015 14:49

Look on the Site Stuff part of the forum

SewingAndCakes · 19/08/2015 14:58

I'm on the list. I've changed all my passwords to new, different ones for each site. I've got a new email address for money related sites, and a new one for mumsnet. Other than the autoresponse emails from MN when I changed my password and email address, I've had no other email from them, which seems a little odd.

AsongforEurope · 19/08/2015 15:03

How do we know if we are on the list?

WhamBamSpam · 19/08/2015 15:05

Thanks all. Have changed my password on as many sites as I can think of.
