To ask for the e-cigarette hysteria to now stop

Or at least commission some research into passively smoking them so that the hysterical banning of them in public places might cease and organisations can instead support their employees to give up smoking real cigarettes. I know that the issue of smoking is divisive, but can't we all agree that if e-cigarettes really are 95% less harmful then they, and the people who smoke them, should have our unreserved support?

Yes!

G1veMeStrength · 19/08/2015 09:34

I'm not hysterical but I don't want to smell them. Therefore will continue to ban them within my workplace.

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2015 09:35

I agree. But you have to remember that public health really really don't like smoking or nicotine or smokers or anything that looks like smoking. So it's not just the absolute harm they say is the problem, they think that just seeing people vaping will make other people want to smoke, so they want it banned. Angry

LittleLionMansMummy · 19/08/2015 09:36

Dh uses them around me but I can't say I really notice the smell - unless he's got apple or raspberry flavour which actually smells rather nice.

merrymouse · 19/08/2015 09:36

I think a big problem is that as e-cigarette manufacturers aren't controlled or licensed nobody really knows what is inside them - that should be the next step.

RainbowFlutterby · 19/08/2015 09:37

I hate the smell of the things, it's not whether they're harmful or not that bothers me.

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2015 09:37

G1vemestrength, what do you think they smell like?

RainbowFlutterby · 19/08/2015 09:38

It also looks gross, imo. Sorry.

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2015 09:39

I know what's in mine, I mix my own liquid. And it's wrong to say they aren't regulated. If thats the case then - Jam isn't regulated. Crisps aren't regulated. Bread isn't regulated. Should they all be banned?

Awholelottanosy · 19/08/2015 09:40

Mine smells of vanilla, I've actually had people I've been vaping nearby say oh what a nice smell!

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2015 09:40

They look gross. Well that's a good reason to ban them.

TheImminentGin · 19/08/2015 09:42

I like the smell. But I agree they need more research and regulation of the ingredients.

Theas18 · 19/08/2015 09:43

Yep agree and would also add the silliness on the news about adding them to prescribables. FFS if you smoke and are actually interested in giving up you can invest the money you don't spend on fags on an e- cigg surely. If you aren't willing to do that you aren't really that motivated to stop anyway?

googoodolly · 19/08/2015 09:43

They look gross? So do lot's of people's fashion choices, but we don't go around banning that.

RainbowFlutterby · 19/08/2015 09:44

Oh I'm not in favour of banning them completely. I just wouldn't want to have to sit in an office with people around me using them (because the smell makes me gag) and I wouldn't want to see people in customer facing roles dragging on one (because I think it looks gross).

Crinkle77 · 19/08/2015 09:47

I have a bit of a conspiracy theory about why there is such a call for a clamp down on e-cigs. The pharmaceutical companies who sell their smoking cessation products (patches, gum etc...) don't e-cigs to be sucessful as it will harm their profits.

magimedi · 19/08/2015 09:48

I vape. Most non smokers I know reckon that the smell is very slight & certainly 100% better than the smell of cigarettes.

Personally I find the sight of people chewing gum somewhat 'gross' but I wouldn't ban it. (The disposal of said gum is a different matter!).

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2015 09:53

Crinkle- yes! Added to the fact that the big pharmacy companies and tobacco companies are the only ones who will be able to afford to jump through the hoops being introduced by the tobacco products directive (which funnily enough they are supporting) you are most definitely right.

Atomik · 19/08/2015 09:54

I know what's in mine, I mix my own liquid.

Got any good "how to" links ?

In the country where I live the hysteria is mainly the governement going "oh fuck we are going to lose LOADS of tax income and even more will live longer needing pensions for years extra"... and so raised VAT on liquid massively. So the price of a bottle almost doubled overnight. In fact in some tobacconists (mine) they just plain old doubled the retail price to avoid "running out of small change" issues.

Apparently if you mix your own liquids you can avoid most of the extra tax becuase while it hits pre prepared liquids hard if you buy all the ingredients and mix it yourself you only get the tax hike on one ingredient. Or something like that.

Previously I could not be arsed, but as things stand now any savings I was making compared to fags has more or less been wiped out. So I am arsed. Very arsed.

merrymouse · 19/08/2015 10:00

You can make your own bread, jam and wine. However, when you start selling products to other people you need to comply with medicine and food safety legislation.

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2015 10:00

Allaboutecigs is a great forum for all sorts of vaping advic allaboute-cigarettes.proboards.com/

I buy vg from boots, pg and nic liquid from local vape shop and mostly use t juice concentrates. There's a mix calculator on the forum which is really useful.

Very simple and straightforward. The only issue might be if they reduce the levels of nicotine available, will be much harder to mix higher strength liquids i.e anything over about 8mg

ginmakesitallok · 19/08/2015 10:02

And e cigs are regulated under general consumer legislation,.

ovenchips · 19/08/2015 10:02

OP YANBU.

Though agree with GinMakesItAllOk that public health organisations won't be happy until it is banned/ strictly controlled/ taxed.

I am not a smoker or vaper but it seems like a fantastic alternative to smoking to me. You'd think the NHS would be doing a jig.

It doesn't actually matter what it looks like.

MidniteScribbler · 19/08/2015 10:02

I don't want someone puffing on either cigarettes or e-cigs around me. And I think that I have every right to expect that. I don't walk in to designated smoking areas and expect people to stop, but I do expect that anyone who chooses to smoke or vape complies with the relevant legislation about where they can and can't use their products.

googoodolly · 19/08/2015 10:03

I don't think anyone is suggesting people vape AT work, but banning it in pubs and restaurants and cafes seems a little stupid when it doesn't actually omit anything harmful.

I don't like the smell of Lynx or certain perfumes or BO but I wouldn't ban any of them in public.
