To ask for the e-cigarette hysteria to now stop

Or at least commission some research into passively smoking them so that the hysterical banning of them in public places might cease and organisations can instead support their employees to give up smoking real cigarettes. I know that the issue of smoking is divisive, but can't we all agree that if e-cigarettes really are 95% less harmful then they, and the people who smoke them, should have our unreserved support?

One issue nhs have with it is that it has targets to hit in relation to the number of smokers who sign up to smoking cessation services. As use of e cigs has gone up people aren't using nhs cessation services, so nhs aren't hitting targets. Common sense would say that if people are stopping smoking on their own and not using nhs resources then that's a good thing. But public health aren't known for common sense.

merrymouse · 19/08/2015 10:06

And e cigs are regulated under general consumer legislation,.

Which isn't really enough. It deals with things like whether a small child could poke their eye out with one, not the ingredients used.

G1veMeStrength · 19/08/2015 10:06

what do you think they smell like?

Better than cigarettes but worse than fresh air.

Some are sweet, some are sickly, some are kind of fusty, from what I have smelt.

G1veMeStrength · 19/08/2015 10:08

I don't like the smell of Lynx or certain perfumes or BO but I wouldn't ban any of them in public.

But people don't tend to go around in public reapplying the smell of lynx etc. Maybe on the odd occasion but nowhere near as frequently as people go around vaping.

mellowheart · 19/08/2015 10:10

Wonder how much revenue the government loses on all the cigarrettes and tobacco that's been replaced with the E-cig.

MilkChocolateButtons · 19/08/2015 10:11

I agree My dad uses the Vape and he's down to 2 cigarettes a day. I know their not the nicest but if their helping people give up smoking then I'm fine with them.

LittleLionMansMummy · 19/08/2015 10:15

I know that I can now kiss dh and not recoil at the taste of tobacco. I know that I can be among vapers and return home without tobacco smoke clinging to my clothes. I know that dh is much fitter and healthier since giving up tobacco and he'll hopefully live longer because of it. And I know that he tried unsuccessfully to give up smoking for around 15 years and he now hasn't had a cigarette for 9 months. I'm concerned that if e-cigarettes are forced into areas frequented by regular smokers, people will revert to old smoking ways.

The smell of perfume/lynx/BO is much stronger than the smell of vaping, though.

It seems that people are only anti-vaping because they're also anti-smoking and let their "ew gross" attitude carry over.

I don't understand how people can say they don't like 'the' smell of vaping - that's like saying you don't like the smell of perfume, at all, no matter which brand it is. There is no one smell associated with vaping, it all depends on the flavour of the juice. Personally, I emit an aroma of fresh coffee when I vape, because that's my favourite flavour (though right now I smell of cherries, just for a change)!

LittleLionMansMummy · 19/08/2015 11:02

Furry to me, the bog standard vaping aroma reminds me of the dry ice they use at gigs and discos, which I absolutely love.

On the news today someone said that vaping being allowed everywhere normalises the act of smoking again, (especially in terms of the very young) which is a step backwards. Smoking has begun to be seen as antisocial and unhealthy. Many are wary of undoing this.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 19/08/2015 13:27

It stopped lots of hardcore smokers I know from smoking. Guys who've had health problems but STILL wouldn't quit are now smoke free. Not on expensive meds ( some that is ) and probably have greatly increased their chances of not ending up on disability and benefits at some point, and working and contributing longer. But yes let's ban them coz they look gross/smell sweet Hmm

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 19/08/2015 13:40

YANBU, ecig hysteria NEEDS to stop.

Around 100,000 people die prematurely from smoking related disease in the UK every year. They lose on average a decade of life. Half of all long-term smokers die prematurely. The vast majority of all quit attempts end in failure. Worldwide, we can expect 1 billion lives lost to smoking this century.

Spreading FUD about something which is 95% safer than smoking, which has a success rate greater than NRT and which actually appeals to smokers is incredibly dangerous.

The number of people, including smokers, who believe that vaping is as dangerous as smoking, or is even more dangerous, is rising. Smokers are being scared away from switching to something which is quite likely to save their life.

JohnCusacksWife · 19/08/2015 13:43

I have no problem with e-cigs but they should be smoked in the same places that cigarettes are smoked i.e. not in a workplace, restaurant, enclosed space, public transport etc

FunnysInLaJardin · 19/08/2015 13:53

my vape smells of candy floss and DH actually quite likes the smell......Our time will come fellow vapers! I haven't smoked in 2 years and feel 100% better for it. DH still seems to think I do though, ie he equates vaping to smoking, so the sooner people realise how relatively harmless vaping is the better

magimedi · 19/08/2015 13:55

Waves at Funnys - it's nearly 3 years for me now!

expatinscotland · 19/08/2015 14:30

YANBU.

CerseiLannistersEyebrow · 19/08/2015 14:34

Vaping has helped me quit smoking. Though does VG cause diarreah? I've been having some tummy troubles with an "organic" brand.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 19/08/2015 15:25

I work in a pub and can say hand on heart I prefer actual cig smoke. There are 3 regulars who sit there chugging on these things as if their lives depend on it. The smell is awful (like a cross between nicotine and off perfume) and the fug created is constant. One irritates my eyes and makes me sneeze. I've asked him to not blow it over the bar but he just smugly shows me a card stating that he is within his rights to vape without obstruction. I'm a smoker but never smoke around non smokers, near doorways, etc. My boss plans to ban them from the immediate bar area and to ban people charging them (we had one explode and burn another barmaids hand).

This smells like cigars/pipe smoke that kind of smell. Apparently it's supposed to. One customer has one that smells like red bull and that's not my take on the smell. It's a thing you can buy. Confused

Best ban ee power bars then, since they've been known to do the same thing!
