To ask for the e-cigarette hysteria to now stop

Or at least commission some research into passively smoking them so that the hysterical banning of them in public places might cease and organisations can instead support their employees to give up smoking real cigarettes. I know that the issue of smoking is divisive, but can't we all agree that if e-cigarettes really are 95% less harmful then they, and the people who smoke them, should have our unreserved support?

Lougle tests of Nicotine have concluded it's not a carginogen. A quick google will tell you that.

Nicotine is posionus in large does yes, but it would be practically impossible to overdose on nicotine using an ecig because you'd taste it straight away, and you'd feel instantly sick. Like alchohol, your body would more than likely throw up if you acidentally ingested it.

Once you've quit cigarettes which have god knows what addictive additives, its actually suprisingly easy to curb a nicotine habit using ecigs. They release a lot less nicotine than a typical cigarette, and its easier to regulate your intake by choosing which percentage concentration of nicotine to smoke. Myself and everyone I know can give or take ours now and thats 6 months in. We all still use it because its something we enjoy, its my one vice and I'm perfectly happy to continue using it until the law says other wise. I don't drink, I'm not obese, I don't partake in recreational drugs. Even if it was only 10% safer than cigs I'd still use it, because I really enjoy the feeling nicotine gives me, and its a hell of a lot cheaper and nicer smelling.

Plus, the evidence on nicotine being anymore harmful than caffine is lacking to say the least, too many misconceptions about nicotine.

Procrastinator I totally agree with you.

Others may think all you can smell is vanilla or cherries or whatever, but I can definitely smell something else. For me, it's like carbonated water - most people think it's delicious, but for me it's bitter, chemically and undrinkable. We all have different taste buds / senses.

And it also gives me blinding headaches.

I think they are a brilliant invention for cutting down on a nicotine addiction, but you aren't kicking it entirely and if you can't go for a couple of hours without nicotine, you still have a serious problem. Same if it were paracetamol, coffee, or any other drug.

Applause for Pubes

I've been vaping now for 2.5 years after a 15 year 20 a day habit. I stealth vape in cinemas, toilets and pubs etc. (when I have to since I don't want to be around smokers) and nobody notices or cares. I don't particularly think we need to be vaping in workplaces and so on, but separate vaping areas should be provided. We are not smokers, it's not smoke, it's not smoking.

I thought Gerry Stimson of Imperial College London makes a few damn good points .

mollie123 · 20/08/2015 08:00

I agree trinity
Although they do not produce tobacco smoke, e-cigarettes still contain nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, and recent research suggests nicotine exposure may also prime the brain to become addicted to other substances.
the addiction is still there, the craving is still there and I wonder if people smoke more e-cigs because they think they are safer Hmm

Pantone363 · 20/08/2015 08:03

DP and I got banned from vaping at our local pub. Someone complained about the smell. The woman who complained regularly comes into the pub stinking of horses and horse manure with her smelly wet farm dog. But my coconut caramel mix "smells"

NiNoKuni · 20/08/2015 08:06

They are safer, at least 95% safer. And research done by Professor Michael Russell also shows nicotine users will regulate their own nicotine intake to maintain their own levels, regardless of source. So no, people generally won't vape more than they smoked.

Professor Michael Russell, a leading English smoking cessation expert from the Institute of Psychiatry, argued that ”it was not so much the efficacy of new nicotine delivery systems as temporary aids to cessation, but their potential as long-term alternatives to tobacco that makes the virtual elimination of tobacco a realistic future target”, and he recommended that “tobacco should be rapidly replaced by cleaner, less harmful, sources of nicotine"

What exactly will it take to convince some people? Papal edict?

DarthVadersTailor · 20/08/2015 08:19

ginmakesitallok When you say you mix your own liquids, what exactly are you mixing? I'm assuming that you purchase the ingredients to mix from somewhere, how can you be sure what's in those?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 20/08/2015 08:43

Yes 'cloudchasing' is a whole other issue and I agree, it's incredibly rude to do that around anyone who might mind. People who impose Big Clouds on those around them are doing a lot of damage to vaping and I wish they could see it and stop - save it for at home or vape gatherings.

It's not so much the kit you use though, it's how you use it. I've got plenty of kit which is capable of producing huge clouds. Somehow I manage not to do this around anybody who might mind. The kit is adjustable and isn't stuck on 'cloudchasing' settings Grin

one more reason for normalisation and regulation of the reasonable variety.
Trouble is lessons, the TPD regulation we are getting next year is likely to ban pretty much everything on the market today.

BeautifulBatman · 20/08/2015 08:45

Darth, the ingredients are subject to the same FSA regulations as all your other food stuffs. You can be as sure about the ingredients in e liquids as you can of any other product subject to FSA regulations. Do you question the integrity of the ingredients in your grocery basket? Or do you just think, for completely unsubstantiated reasons, that all e liquid suppliers are shady?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 20/08/2015 08:54

I'm a little bit in love with Gerry Stimson Grin

is great if anybody has a spare half-hour to watch. He's very good at unpicking the reasons for the 'hysteria'.
suzannefollowmyvan · 20/08/2015 09:28

I'm a bit tempted to start using nicotine for it's effects but a bit worried it would make me feel sick, pity you can't mix it in with coffee.
There must be some synergy between caffeine and nicotine? ?

ginmakesitallok · 20/08/2015 10:36

The vg I buy is pharmaceutical grade from boots. The nicotine liquid is from reputable UK supplier who use pharmaceutical grade products (same with the pg). The flavouring is again from reputable company. I know more about what's in my ecigs than I do about what's in my dinner.

Sallystyle · 20/08/2015 12:49

Nicotine is no more a carcinogen than caffeine is.
