...to ask a question about who buys your sanpro?

TAAT, sort of.

Posters were saying that lots of men buy their wives sanpro and are totally unfazed by the topic. Is that generally the case please?

It's never occurred to me to ask DH to do that, ever, partly because I'm a better judge of what suits me and partly because....well.....he's a MAN. My dad would have been mortified at the very suggestion that he buy such things for his wife or daughters, and in the intensely patriarchal country we lived in, he'd have been looked at very oddly by the pharmacist.

What happens in your house?

I grew up with 2 sisters and a Mum so my Dad often bought sanpro.

I would rip the lid off the top of the tampon box and he would take that to the supermarket to buy the correct ones.

My Dad caused a pearl clutching event in the local shop circa 1970 when he asked for nipple shields as my Mum needed them to feed my sister, there was almost a fainting incident from one of the shop assistants Grin

Dh will buy mine, I have 2 sons who both now know that when I say I have a poorly tummy it means I am on my period. Used tampons are wrapped in toilet roll and put in the bin but we have an en-suite and the boys use the family bathroom so never see it but it wouldn't bother me or them if they did.

TrionicLettuce · 12/08/2015 16:47

Back when I used disposables DH was happy to pick them up if he was doing the shopping and was perfectly capable of getting the right ones if I told him the brand/type.

I use washables now and he's not in the least bit bothered by them being in a tub in the bathroom prior to being washed or when they're out on the radiators post wash.

muminhants1 · 12/08/2015 16:53

I buy it online or myself. Wouldn't dream of asking DH to get them. But maybe I should! WHY is it different from loo roll!

And yes I wrap everything up to put in the bin, but it's more hygienic to do that in any event.

Flingmoo · 12/08/2015 16:54

I only buy mine so I can browse and choose which kind I like. I wouldn't hesitate to ask DH if I urgently needed some and couldn't come along to the shop though!

When DS was a newborn, DH and I both fell ill and couldn't go to the shops, I ran out of maternity pads and was still bleeding fairly heavily. I rang up my dad and asked him to go and buy me some jumbo sanitary pads, the biggest he could find! Grin He was a slightly sheepish about it as he was worried he'd pick the wrong type but we had a good old laugh about it.

Shodan · 12/08/2015 16:56

DH would get them if I told him exactly what to get.

And I believe ds1 (19) would too, now, since he went to university and got himself a girlfriend. (He would also probably buy chocolate and fetch a hot water bottle for me Grin)

Flingmoo · 12/08/2015 16:57

Oh, at the same time I also asked my dad to collect my antibiotics from the pharmacy for my infected episiotomy Blush There's no dignity when pregnant or recently postnatal!

ArriettyMatilda · 12/08/2015 16:59

I buy it because I buy most of the shopping anyway and I know when I am going to need it. Dp would probably buy it if I asked but I would need to show him a picture or an old packet of exactly what I wanted first and tell him that under no circumstances must he get the deo fresh version He might be slightly bothered about doing so, but he would do it.

Theycallmemellowjello · 12/08/2015 16:59

I usually buy my own (just as dh buys his own toiletries) but I have asked him to pick them up in the past. Just told him what I wanted as he's obviously not familiar with all the options. I don't think he was embarrassed - it's not like the cashier will have thought they were for him!

vvviola · 12/08/2015 17:01

I buy them, mainly for a combination of the reasons mentioned above (I do the shopping, am disorganised so usually get them on way to work etc)

DH has bought maternity pads for me in the past, so I can't see he'd object too much. Only difficultly would be making sure he found an unscented pack - seems even the ones not marked as scented are scented these days!

ItMustBeBunnies · 12/08/2015 17:04

DH never had a problem buying sanitary products. I just said 'pink with wings' and he'd come back with the right ones.

Since switching to washable pads, he's not bothered about them being in the wash, or hanging out to dry (I've pre-rinsed them out).

Totality22 · 12/08/2015 17:04

We do online shopping so I'll buy then or else if I see what I use on offer then I'll stock up. Have never needed OH to buy it... We used to do weekly shop together pre online shopping so he'd be in the vicinity if that counts.

My dad did the weekly shop where we were younger and often he could need to get all our bits - big old pads for mum, Always for me and tampons for my sister. My dad isn't exactly 'progressive' but this never bothered him.

On a side note the term sanpro makes me feel violent. God I loathe it!!!

MarchLikeAnAnt · 12/08/2015 17:05

Who ever goes to the shop buys them, mostly DH.

BleachedBarnet · 12/08/2015 17:10

Whoever is doing the shopping buys them so nowadays it's usually me (I do love an Ocado shop) but it's been DP plenty of times in the past.

He knows what kind I use as it's been the same for 10 years. He has no embarrassment about it as they're clearly not for him are they. He's much more embarrassed about buying condoms should that happen!

agoodyearforblossom · 12/08/2015 17:11

I tend to buy up when there's a deal, but DH is happy to buy too - he started young though, he remembers his mum sending him out for tampons and a pack of B+H to the corner shop when he was 7!

bloodyteenagers · 12/08/2015 17:16

Ex would when needed go and buy some. He knew what was used, aside from times I got caught short there's usually a good supply in the toilet.

Tokelau · 12/08/2015 17:20

Whoever goes to the supermarket buys them. DH knows exactly which ones to get, and not to get. With a wife and two teenage DDs we need loads anyway, so he doesn't ask anymore, just buys a pack or two every time he goes to the supermarket!

I do wrap them before they go in the bin, and have taught my DDs to do the same. We wrap them either in a little bit of toilet paper, or in the wrappers that the new pad comes in.

KnitFastDieWarm · 12/08/2015 17:29

I can't imagine my husband, father or brother being any more phased by buying tampons than they would be by buying kitchen roll. Hmm

MrsPeabody · 12/08/2015 17:30

Mine would buy them without a problem.

First time had a wee talk about super not meaning best though Wink

bonzo77 · 12/08/2015 17:44

DH, largely because he works for Boots, so gets a discount, and it looks good for his sales figures! Though I get pantiliners because the ones I like are usually not available in Boots, but are in Waitrose. Bizarrely he is embarassed to buy condoms or lube, I get those with the internet supermarket shopping!

agoodyearforblossom · 12/08/2015 17:46

Grin I'm going to think of super being the Best when I do my shop now

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/08/2015 17:50

Dh buys them. Ds1 would buy them happily. Ds2 probably would. I think ds3 would be embarrassed.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 12/08/2015 17:54

Me because I do most of the household shopping.

Out of interest why would towels or tampons be shopped for separately (generally speaking, not including one off running out of something)?

I mean why is the answer not always 'whoever does the grocery shopping'?

MrsFrankRicard · 12/08/2015 17:54

DH buys them more often than me, as it is the sort of thing that I forget to add into the online shop, then I get my period and realise I only have 1 hanging around in the bottom of my handbag so will send DH a message and ask him to pick me some up. He doesn't mind at all. My dad never bought for my mum, except for once, she had a big bleed when pg with my sister and was put on bedrest, my DF and me were sent to the supermarket for pads, I remember standing with him looking at the selection, his face like - Confused.

FrancesHB · 12/08/2015 17:56

I have boxes at home - period always arrives while I'm at work usually, so go get mine then, then shop for the month. Hence never need to buy with grocery shop.... Most people are more organised than me thoughGrin

GreenSkittles · 12/08/2015 17:58

DF used to do the main shop so he'd buy them for me and DM. It never occurred to me to feel embarrassed about that - he even knew to check the bathroom stash and see which sizes we were running low on.
