To miss the days when people were just 'thirsty'?!

What's all this shit with, 'hydrating'? It's called drinking fucking water!

Whenever I hear someone claiming to be 'dehydrated', I want to reach for my revolver. No, dear, you're not dehydrated, you're just thirsty. It won't hurt you to wait twenty minutes for a drink.

Advanced capitalism, combined with nanny-statism seems to have fostered a nation of adult-babies who can't got five minutes without a snack, needing a piss, or a plastic bottle to suck on. It truly does my head in.

I can't remember the last time I sat through a film or a play without multiple audience members nipping out at least once during the show. Yes, I do appreciate that SOME people suffer incontinence, or might have needed a shot of insulin but, come on, not on this scale!

"2 litres is about right for most people."

Who says?

ProvisionallyAnxious · 14/08/2015 10:49

it makes much more sense to listen to your body.

But, what if those people you see drinking out of bottles are listening to their bodies? What if they found that if they didn't carry a bottle around, they forgot / didn't get the chance to drink and then felt a bit rubbish by the end of the day?

Right now I feel thirsty. It won't kill me to wait thirty minutes for a drink, but given that it hurts absolutely no one to take my water bottle out of my bag and have a drink, why the hell should I wait? And how does it show a lack of moral fibre? Takes a furtive sip and hopes fellow library users don't deem me to be a symbol of all that is wrong with the modern world.

sebsmummy1 · 14/08/2015 10:53

Interesting thread. I am enjoying the 'adult baby' theory as it does seem as though many adults are comforting themselves throughout the day by suckling on a water bottle constantly. I wonder if it's a reaction to the stressful lives we lead and whether psychologically it's like giving ourselves a head pat and a squeeze.

Melonfool · 14/08/2015 10:59

I drink almost no water, maybe two or three cups of green tea a day and often forget to drink anything else. Yesterday I had my three cups of tea and a glass of red wine in the evening.

I ought to be dead.....

What a load of old baloney about 'needing' 2 litres of water a day, or being 'dehydrated' before you feel thirsty.

There is zero scientific evidence of these mad claims.

Drink when you want to. Drink more when it's hot.

The vast majority of our 'hydration' (for those of us not daft enough to believe the hype about the 2 litre thing) comes from food. In my case, mainly Magnums.

daisychain01 · 14/08/2015 11:03

and don't expect other people to fit around your awkward behaviour.

This is an interesting one - I stated that I as a sentient adult choose to drink hourly, and it has worked for me very well for a long time (esp as I do regular sport - 6 days a week).

So where did I state that I am "expecting" anyone to need to "fit round me" or that my choice to stay hydrated is affecting anyone else?

I go to the cinema regularly with my DM and DP/DSS and I can never remember a single occasion when anyone has needed to get past me to go to the loo.

Trying to make logic out of the inaccurate judgmental "only in the MN world" nonsense on this thread (not least of all in the OP) is pointless - but as always on AIBU, there is reasonable stuff amongst it all.

Charis1 · 14/08/2015 11:20

because, daisychain, this stupid adult-baby suckling fad has got such a grip on society, that we are constantly having to pussy foot around the sucklers, provide water, provide drinking breaks, provide bottles for children, clear up spillages, carry wet stuff, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc and that is the time wasting and inconvenience impinges on me on a daily basis, not to mention the medical and environmental damage we all have to pay for, and the LITTER

Cotto · 14/08/2015 11:21

If insensible loss is approx a litre then that needs replacing minimum to maintain the same level of hydrationBertrand

Most people need about another litre to ensure good diuresis, prevent constipation etc.
Its a good test to check the colour of your urine ,it should be straw coloured and smell inoffensive.
If it is darker, smells strong or you exercise a lot drink more as needed.

I think if most people only drink when thirsty they aren't drinking enough, thirst is your body telling you it is getting very dehydrated.

Queeltie · 14/08/2015 11:26

No it isn't Cotto. Your body getting thirsty is telling you you ned to drink, that is all.

And you get liquid through food.

Feline9 · 14/08/2015 11:26

Charis how do you? I carry my own water and I've never expected anyone to clear up water spillages. I also don't litter.

squoosh · 14/08/2015 11:30

The aqua-anger on this thread is most amusing.

ProvisionallyAnxious · 14/08/2015 11:31

Also, if you carry a bottle, you don't need a drinking break... whereas if you don't, and you get thirsty, you will need to go get a glass, find a tap, etc. Same as providing bottles for children. They do need to drink at some point - if not out of bottles, you'll have to get them a glass, wash it up afterwards, etc.

Unless the entire phenomenon of drinking water is something we should put an end to?

Cotto · 14/08/2015 11:32

This thread is getting hysterical !

"Pussy footing around the sucklers"
How ?? I fill a bottle with tap water ,wash it myself and go to the loo on my own, I don't litter as I don't use plastic bottles .

"provide water"
Fresh water to drink is a pretty normal thing to need.

gamerchick · 14/08/2015 11:33

Thirst is a sign you're already dehydrated.. You're not supposed to feel thirsty much.

This thread is well amusing I agree.

gamerchick · 14/08/2015 11:35

We should watch... The frothers on this thread might be government spies trying to look for ways to save money. Get people believing that you're aren't entitled to water it might save a few quid Wink

SlaggyIsland · 14/08/2015 11:37

Why on earth would we have evolved to only feel thirsty when we were already too dehydrated?
It makes far more sense that thirsty = need to drink. The whole "if you're thirsty it's already too late" thing is such a giant amount of crap.
If you look at animals they will drink when they are thirsty and drink a large amount at one time. We seem to be the only mammals who go around sipping like little bees.
I don't really care - people can knock themselves out and sip all day if they want - but stop trying to justify it with pseudo-science.

CaptainHolt · 14/08/2015 11:37

I don't get all that thirsty but at work (air con environment) if I don't consciously drink then by mid afternoon I get headaches and my piss looks like treacle. Everyone has either a bottle of water or a thermos cup and if you insisted on not drinking all day people would think you were weird. We don't get breaks so need to drink 'on the go'. There is water cooler too, but the cups are very small and you aren't supposed to leave open cups lying around so people tend to just use it to fill bottles.

Charis1 · 14/08/2015 11:38

Thirst is a sign you're already dehydrated.. You're not supposed to feel thirsty much.

This is an example of the gibbering gobbledegook that has enslaved these suckling adults,

I presume Gamerchick knows this and is posting ironically.

Queeltie · 14/08/2015 11:39

I don't care how much or how often you drink. But the pseudo science does annoy me.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 14/08/2015 11:39

ok so the message here is "drink less water & stop peeing all the time"

what's next? cut cown on breathing? down with gravity?

Charis1 · 14/08/2015 11:39

if you insisted on not drinking all day people would think you were weird.

This shows how successfully this marketing campaign has altered some peoples perception of normal.

It is completely normal not to drink at work. it is cleaner, healthier and more hygienic not to drink at work.

gamerchick · 14/08/2015 11:40

Nah I like dancing amongst twilight zone dwellers, I find it well funny Wink

GrumpyOldBiddy2 · 14/08/2015 11:40

I don't get the fury about people drinking water Confused

If I carry a bottle of water with me so that I can drink when I'm thirsty - what has it got to do with anyone else? Who is affected by me drinking water?

Why so furious?

ArgyMargy · 14/08/2015 11:40

So Cotto, I have mainly only drunk when thirsty for about 50 years. What is it that should have happened to my body by now? (Apart from failing to become a brain surgeon through the damage to my cognitive function)

Feline9 · 14/08/2015 11:41

Chairs how is it cleaner and healthier?

Cotto · 14/08/2015 11:42

"Aqua anger" Grin

Maybe they are grumpy because they aren't drinking enough Grin
