To Think That Benedict Cumberbatch........

Is a bit of a nob?
I get that actors don't want to be filmed and think its bad when people use mobiles in live theatre.
But its hardly 'mortifying' as he told his 'fans'
He wants to live in the real world, he may then understand the true meaning of mortifying.

Refreshing to see on the Same news item that a Beatles tribute band actively encourage people to film their show.

Book it Procras! Were few seats at the one I've booked at

achieve6 · 11/08/2015 00:31

Santas, spot in. I think he is mortified because he knows it's his fans and feels responsible in some way.

Hamlet is usually long but I'm under the impression it's a tad shorter due to some changes. My friend was at opening night, it might change of course. Going in September. Set design by the same team as Chimerica. Okay I'll stop waffling now.....back to thread!

YABU OP but I'm sorry people felt the need to say that rudely.

achieve6 · 11/08/2015 00:32

Spot ON. Ruddy auto correct!

recyclingbag · 11/08/2015 01:00

I have tickets.

I go to the theatre a lot and have done for decades. I've never seen anyone attempt to film a performance on their phone.

If someone tried it sitting in front of me I'll give them a new meaning to 'hands free'

Icimoi · 11/08/2015 01:08

It seems to me a totally accurate use of words. I imagine he does feel mortified that his groupies are ruining it for his fellow actors and the rest of the audience. I find it extraordinary that people seem unable to enjoy a play, sightseeing trip or whatever unless they film it at the same time. With the larger phones people tend to have these days, it's a real pain in the neck. And it's really quite bitchy to have a go at someone for trying to do something about the problem.

Kampeki · 11/08/2015 01:12

My 10yo dd saw this on the news and was quite scathing with regard to his use of the word "mortifying". She suggested that distracting, offputting or annoying might have been more appropriate! Grin

I think he has a perfectly reasonable point, it's crap that people film live theatre on their mobiles. Tbh, I didn't even know this was a thing! However, he expressed himself in a slightly prattish way!

TheCatsFlaps · 11/08/2015 01:24

Whilst I find use of electronic devices in theatres terribly...pedestrian, I don't hate it as much as I loathe that smug, coiffed, rubber faced, thin nosed moron Cumonsnatch. He makes my fucking blood boil and I can't explain it. His pathetic wee stooshie really fucking wound me up. Oh, if only someone would bitchslap him! It is like his sole purpose in life is to make me throw up a little bit, in my mouth. Him and that Eddie-fucking-Redmayne. Grrrrrrr Angry Angry Angry

Prole · 11/08/2015 02:04

Mr Cumberbatch was right. He also urged stage door hanger ons audience to actually watch the play and remember it in their heads. Bold words in these days of filming and oversharing just about everything. When I see people watching entire live concerts through an Ipad screen, I do wonder as to their sense of reality. Perhaps actual memory is so last century.

angelos02 · 11/08/2015 05:14

I agree with him. I'd like to see ANY use of mobile phones banned in theatres, cinemas & concerts. Switch the fucking thing off for a couple of hours. Even checking for text messages is distracting for others.

achieve6 · 11/08/2015 06:15

I'm confused as to why anyone is questioning his use of the term "mortifying". He has used it correctly and I imagine it is embarrassing and shaming for him in front of his colleagues?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 11/08/2015 06:33

I agree with his sentiment, good for him to speak up.

laffy you've made a right twat of yourself with your posts on this thread, no need for the aggression towards OP.

Totality22 · 11/08/2015 06:39

Completely agree with his sentiments, no one should be filming a theatre production (for many reason - including it distracting your fellow viewers) but for some reason I found what he said and how he said it really wanky.

hend0saki · 11/08/2015 06:46

I agree with you, OP.
BC needs to dry his eyes. People are paying upwards of £80 each to see him, thus keeping him in his very nice lifestyle. All he's doing is walking about on stage, and talking at the same time. Big wow.
Same goes for pop stars who go on about how much work is put into rehearsing their shows. Well, I put in a lot of work to be able to afford to go and see their shows, so I don't think me taking a few videos is really the end of their world.

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 11/08/2015 07:10

Lots of people have paid £80 for a ticket to see BC as hamlet and can't because of the selfish idiots filing the whole thing immediately in front of them.

He was right to tell them to stop. Hopefully if they don't the theatre staff will evict them do that everyone else in the theatre can actually watch the play.

MidniteScribbler · 11/08/2015 07:13

The nobs are the people that actually need to be reminded that waving your fucking phone around in a theatre is a dick move.

Icimoi · 11/08/2015 07:14

Kampski, your 10 year old needs to learn the correct meaning of the word "mortifying".

CatsFlaps, what on earth has Benedict Cumberbatch ever done to you?

LavenderRain · 11/08/2015 07:19

Wow, didn't think this thread would be so unpopular!
thecatsflaps your rant made me spit out my coffeeGrin

cat that's a bit harsh.

Seriouslyffs · 11/08/2015 07:25

I don't act, but if you're delivering something exposing or difficult, and you notice someone recording or talking Blush

Mortifying is the perfect word.

southeastdweller · 11/08/2015 07:26

People who record productions are dicks. Really hope everyone who continues to do it there (and it will continue) are seen by staff and get chucked out.

He is completely right.

CatMilkMan · 11/08/2015 07:26

I know still, I originally wrote bit of a wanker but I haven't had any coffee yet so I changed it to ignorant wanker.

catsrus · 11/08/2015 07:28

Yabvu. He used the word entirely correctly - he is being honest with his fans and asking them to behave reasonably. Over 40yrs ago I went to see the then "actor of the day" in Hamlet - Robert Powell. I still vividly remember the experience - for the acting not the distraction of what other audience members were doing.

Idontseeanytimelords · 11/08/2015 07:29

People get pissed off enough when idiots get in the way of the audience while filming a school play never mind a famous actor in Shakespeare!
I think if he's aware that the other actors are being disrupted due to the waving of mobile phones then mortifying is the perfect word to use - most of them would be there to film him after all.
Can't believe some people are so thick that they have to be constantly using their phones all the bloody time..

LavenderRain · 11/08/2015 07:30

Thankscatmilkman go and have a coffee before you join and more threads Grin
