To Think That Benedict Cumberbatch........

Is a bit of a nob?
I get that actors don't want to be filmed and think its bad when people use mobiles in live theatre.
But its hardly 'mortifying' as he told his 'fans'
He wants to live in the real world, he may then understand the true meaning of mortifying.

Refreshing to see on the Same news item that a Beatles tribute band actively encourage people to film their show.

I agree with BC who was entirely reasonable and probably spoke on behalf of the cast.

Live theatre is just that: a live performance. Actors do not want to be distracted when they are in the moment, it's a performance for the audience, who've paid good money to be there and pay their wages.

Every time I've been to a play recently there has been an announcement before the curtain goes up telling people to turn off their phones. Why do they then think it is OK to turn them on again and film the play?

I'm not particularly a Cumberbatch fan or otherwise, but the only people who are being nobs are the ones ruining someone else's expensive, special and probably long awaited trip to the theatre by using their phones.

Cumberbatch is quite right about making memories in your mind, I don't get the obsession with photographic proof of everything.

LavenderRain · 10/08/2015 23:07

Like I said twice I totally agree that phones/tablets etc should be banned from theatres.
I just found the way he was whinging about it a bit pathetic.
But I accept IABU and will fuck off to bed.
this place is getting worse for abuse

He was the only good thing about frankenstein really! We saw him when he was playing the monster and he was fabulous. Definitely going to see him at the cinema

Mrsjayy · 10/08/2015 23:21

I hate him he gives me the creeps and overrated but i have to agree with him he is giving his all in a play and all he sees is phones in the air poor bloke no wonder he felt the way he did.

LavenderRain · 10/08/2015 23:26

Thank you thecatfromjapan
Apology accepted

laffymeal i think you will find you are the goady one telling me to fuck off for no reason. . You are obviously in a mood tonight so I shall just ignore you now

OP posts:
GreenSkittles · 10/08/2015 23:31

No, I thought the way he phrased it in the video was very polite and sweet. Of course if you get your info from the Daily Mail headlines (not accusing you OP, just saying generally) then you will think he's a knob.

laffymeal · 10/08/2015 23:31

I told you to fuck off because based on another poster who has since apologised I thought you were a journalist. Most people have found your op unreasonable. Goodnight.

thecatfromjapan · 10/08/2015 23:34

Now I feel very guilty. I owe you an apology too, laffy.

laffymeal · 10/08/2015 23:37

Lol, it's a crappy internet forum, don't lose any sleep over it. Grin....i don't even like Old noface that much but I agree with him in this matter.

If anyone is interested they're doing a National Theatre Live recording of this in October

You go to your local cinema and watch the play live as its happening

I've been to some before and they're really good. Very well done

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 10/08/2015 23:53

I agree with MrsDeVere. And I am no fan of BC, believe me.

I took him to be "mortified" (i.e. ashamed, embarrassed) as his actual presence is, in a way, spoiling the entire performance for the other actors - and audience members I imagine - with these distracting recording devices being used.

I believe that recording performances is not a done thing in theatres. Therefore he was correct to ask people not to do it.

BC also seems to have a fairly good grasp of the meaning of mortified TBH.

NeverHadHaveHas · 10/08/2015 23:59

Laffymeal - ironic how you told the OP to fuck off and get her own ideas, and then admit you only told her to fuck off based on someone else's idea that she was a journalist. How about taking some of your own advice before jumping down people's throats?

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 11/08/2015 00:08

John it's Hamlet, not known for brevity! 3.5-4 hours is pretty standard :o

I'm hoping to see it at the cinema. Love his voice and I love the play. Hope it's showing at Vue though, they have comfier chairs for such long films:o

steff13 · 11/08/2015 00:09

This was how I took it, too. Like him or not the things I would do to that man, he's a pretty big star, and people are there to see him. That has to make it difficult for the other actors. I guess I have to look up the word mortified; I thought it only meant ashamed/embarrassed.
