to wonder how popular Jeremy Corbyn really is?

I really like a lot of his policies and I think he is a breath of fresh air but I wonder if he is really as popular as the press makes out?

Would you vote for him in 2020? If you didn't vote Labour in the GE would you consider voting for them if Corbyn is elected leader?

PS. Before the usual suspects ask, no, not a journalist, just asking out of curiosity.

I'm afraid I won't read the Guardian Lumpy

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 10/08/2015 21:58

twilight, which parts of the budget do you approve of?

BestIsWest · 10/08/2015 22:01

What ilovesooty said.

longfingernails · 10/08/2015 22:05

I believe in free markets, aiming for public sector surpluses, flat taxes, deporting illegals, leaving the ECHR, greater private sector involvement in the NHS and schools, higher defence spending, further cuts to legal aid, tightening union law to prevent thug bosses holding innocent people ransom, in using the Anglosphere rather than the EU as a cornerstone of foreign policy, lowering the benefit cap significantly, and making the welfare system far more contributory, and in particular, not universal.

I believe Jeremy Corbyn is the best possible leader of the Labour party if I want my preferred policies put into practice.

twilightskye · 10/08/2015 22:11

Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything I disagree strongly with.

Stingingthistle · 10/08/2015 22:18

I am not a fan at all. Absolutely no way would I ever vote for him.

Tanith · 10/08/2015 22:19

Of course he's not anti-Semetic! He's simply doing what the Labour government (and, in fact, the Conservative government before them) did with the IRA.

It was the Peace talks and the brave decision of the politicians of the day that made the Peace process possible.

As for Corbyn supporting homeopathy - you do know that the current Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, is also in favour of homeopathy? That the Royal Family use it?

tightening union law to prevent thug bosses holding innocent people ransom

Could you give us some specific
examples of this please?

LizzyUseless · 10/08/2015 22:26

A couple of counter views to the Alan Johnson article - here and here

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 10/08/2015 22:26

Also, longfingernails

further cuts to legal aid

Why do you think this is a good thing?

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 10/08/2015 22:30

Thanks for those links, LizzySmile

LizzyUseless · 10/08/2015 22:33

You're welcome.

jellybeans · 10/08/2015 22:37

I would vote for him now and in 2020. I know friends and family who have signed up to vote for him. Yes I think he is that popular.

Bubblesinthesummer · 10/08/2015 22:38

Just read that letter and I am quite shocked. Think I'm going to have to change my stance on Corbyn. So he is good friends with Hamas and Hezbollah and Sheik Raed Salah who has described Jews (not Israelis) as "bacteria" and propogates the medieval "blood libel" that Jews use the blood of non-Jewish children to make their bread shock. He's also been linked to Paul Eisen who is a holocaust denier and rampant anti-semite. The more I read into Corbyn's views the more it appears he might be anti-Jewish or at least a closet racist. Sure it's ok to be pro-Palestinian and that doesn't make you anti-Semitic but I am sure everyone would be in hysterics if the good friend of a potential candidate called Muslims 'bacteria' and peddled vicious Islamophobic conspiracy theorie

^ this is the huge red line for me and many others.

Quiero · 10/08/2015 22:38

I'm voting for Corbyn and I will vote Labour in 2020 if he is leader. I would not vote Labour if Liz Kendal was in charge; I'd vote Green.

I don't know why people think Corbyn will make Labour unelectable, I'd say quite the opposite. It'll bring some Green and SNP voters back and even convert some UKIPers. Even our very own Claig is a Corbyn supporter.

I think people forget we don't need to win Tory voters over - they only make up 33%. It's no wonder the right wing media have their knickers in such a twist. This is the biggest threat to the Establishment in a long time.

Takver · 10/08/2015 22:41

Bubbles - do read the links that LizzyUseless gave above. It's worth noting that the Alan Johnson who wrote the letter is not Alan Johnson the Labour mp and ex-minister.

apricotdanish · 10/08/2015 22:46

Just signed up to vote for him. I find him a breath of fresh air and am not shaken by attempts to describe him as anti- Semitic because he has tried to open a dialogue with Hamas and Hezbollah. There are many vile statements made by people on the Israeli government side and yet when Western leaders enter into dialogue with them they're not portrayed as supporters of Israeli aggression. I welcome that he does more than just pay lip service to principles of social justice but actually wants to institute policies that will help bring it about.

outtolunchagain · 10/08/2015 22:50

He will be 71 at the time of the next election which means that if he won he would be PM at the age of 76 , I don't want to be ageist but it's a big job for someone of that age.

He has also never had a proper job , before being an MP he was a paid union official so as far as I am concerned he is a career politician who has never lived in the real world , just like the rest of them .He also comes across , to me, as rather sanctimonious ,and puritanical and dare I say it preachy .

My ds is a huge fan and superficially I can see the attraction , he is certainly a change from the packaged offerings from the other leaders , but a potential PM , I have my doubts .I am not convinced he has the skills to hold the parliamentary party together or to run an organisation .Will he be able to cope with all the technical material that he will have to read and digest in short timescales, what about managing the advisors that he will need etc .Its all very well shouting on the sidelines but leading the party that's another matter.

I do think the party will split. He has voted against the whip over 500 times so can't expect MPs to not do the same if they don't agree with him and many don't

caroldecker · 11/08/2015 00:28

The IRA wanted to have a united Ireland, not kill every English person on the face of the earth and talks could be had.
Where has Corbyn even recognised and challenged the anti-semitism of Hamas and Hezbollah? If not, he as anti-semetic as they are and wants all Jews dead.

frillyflower · 11/08/2015 01:00

Corbyn's not anti Semitic. Supporting Palestinian rights does not make you anti Semitic. It makes you a decent, kind human being.

caroldecker · 11/08/2015 01:03

Again, supporting Hamas and Hezbollah makes you anti-semitic. Not supporting palastian rights.
Corbyn supports Hamas and Hezbollah. Let's get this right.

Lookingforwardtoholiday · 11/08/2015 08:08

Absolutely Carol. Supporting Palestinian rights is one thing and most people including the Israeli on the street supports that. Supporting Hamas who openly wish to kill all Jews makes you anti Semitic and in my opinion Corbyn is anti Semitic. If he ever becomes PM I fear Britain will no longer be a safe place for Jews to live openly.

MaidOfStars · 11/08/2015 08:44

As for Corbyn supporting homeopathy - you do know that the current Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, is also in favour of homeopathy? That the Royal Family use it?
Yes, and I am vocally keyboard warrior aghast at both. It is disgraceful that the person in charge of the NHS laughs in the face of evidence-based medicine. It concerns me greatly.

Charles I can do nothing about, except feel validation for my opinion the he is A Very Silly Boy.

I feel very strongly about this. Corbyn voting to have homeopathy supported on the NHS while tweeting that it works for some people (just like conventional medicine, because they are both organic?!?) is a political red flag for me.
