another day, another celebrity death, another newsfeed chocka with people posting RIP to someone they didn't know, never met and never mentioned once whilst they were alive.

AIBU to find this behaviour to be completely pointless and wrong if you didn't know the deceased?

OP posts:
MrsHathaway · 07/08/2015 20:15

I eye roll if it just says "RIP Sleb" but I respect those who post "Sad to hear of Sleb's untimely death. His books/her music/paintings/programmes spoke to me when I was young and unhappy."

I definitely recognise the Grief Thief (aka Grief Wanker) who can't resist making everything about them and races to be first to break the news. They often do a slightly cryptic "OMG not Sleb too" status so you can't tell if it's Death or Yewtree that got him.

SchwarzwalderKirschtorte · 07/08/2015 20:31

R.I.P. posts are a courtesy - a bit like when a funeral procession went by people stopped and took off their hat or bowed their head to show they were acknowledging the death and honouring the person. No one can see you do that on the internet so you type R.I.P.
It doesn't matter if you personally knew them, the fact is they made an impact in your life and thus you honour them.

Getthewonderwebout · 07/08/2015 21:59

so you can't tell if it's Death or Yewtree that got him

I know both are awful but I have last laughed at your phrasing.

I got given a yew tree at the weekend. off at a tangent

EgyptianSnow · 07/08/2015 22:02

Suppose it's just their way of showing respect to the family and deseased

gotta lol that the op doesn't know that there is a FB topic

giraffesCantBrushTheirTeeth · 08/08/2015 00:06

I posted Stuart from apprentice yesterday as he died from asthma and think it's important people know it kills

HopeClearwater · 08/08/2015 00:14

One of my relatives rushes not to gush but to be the first person to announce the celebrity death on FB. In fact any really miserable or sad news must be shared right away on FB, instead of leaving us all to find out via the more usual news sources Hmm

Colandular · 08/08/2015 00:18

Does it matter? really? so what.

I have only close friends and family on facebook. Surely that's how it should be? I did post about my mum when she died but only my friends and family got to see it. Keep it private then!

Colandular · 08/08/2015 00:19

actually i should have said family that I like too, I dont have members of family on my facebook that i dont like.

Colandular · 08/08/2015 00:23

Gotta laugh that samcro has to feel the need to tell the op of her mumsnet knowledge.

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2015 00:39

Why Colandular?

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2015 00:42

gotta lol that the op doesn't know that there is a FB topic

why would you have to lol that they didnt know?

Colandular · 08/08/2015 00:45

not everyone lives on here sparkling. not everyone has to know about all the topics do they?

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2015 00:45

I think the Op is new IIRC.

RIPs on FB
Colandular · 08/08/2015 00:54

It would when the posters are arseholes wouldnt it Grin

Colandular · 08/08/2015 00:59

I correct myself here... some of the posters are arseholes that think they bloody own the joint and make newcomers feel terrible. Fucking bullies I call them.

Colandular · 08/08/2015 01:23

what are you like in real life samcro? are you a nice person? or are you troubled?

Do you need to net to make you something you arent?

I hope you think about this tomorrow.

hazeyjane · 08/08/2015 07:26

I had no idea there was a FB topic either, but what's wrong with this being in AIBU?

exLtEveDallasNoBollocks · 08/08/2015 07:35

I posted when Rik Mayall died. I was genuinely saddened to hear he'd gone. I posted the "Rick is dead" quote though, rather than a RIP
