to be worried sick about blanket over baby

I am probably getting myself into a state but in utter desperation last night I took my one week old into bed to feed last night and fell asleep -may have been for a minute or ten-I woke up and part of duvet was over baby-I could still see his head but it was still over him but kind of in the air. I immediately removed it, lifted him and he was breathing steadily-I almost put my ear in his mouth.

Is there any way this could have harmed him? I mentioned it to HV this morning and she just said be prepared if Co sleeping which I know of course I should have been. I know IABU for allowing this to happen and I feel sick but could I have harmed him in anyway?

Of course - and we are a co-sleeping family.

I don't think the NHS research is flawed.

They give out a simple blanket message.
Of course the truth is far more complex and co-sleeping can be the safest place for a baby but I understand the need to simplify.

I found the sleepyhead a godsend for co-sleeping - we laid it between DH and I in the middle of the bed on top of the duvet. The design makes it all but impossible for them to wriggle out or you to roll on them. So you can sleep very very close to your baby (I used to rest my head on the edge of the sleepyhead so we were practically cheek-to-cheek). For the first few weeks I had to hold him all night against my chest but I wedged myself semi upright with a v-shaped pillow so I couldn't budge an inch. Not ideal but only way to get any sleep.

OP, chiming in to say give yourself a break - these things happen and no harm done. However, I would advise taking steps to make sure it doesn't repeat - what about one of those cribs that 'attach' to the side of your bed (apologies if this has been said before)?
