Was it a big or small affair and did you have any/much financial support from parents/ family?

I got married just under two weeks ago and it cost between £5000 and £6000 in total. Apart from the food we did everything ourselves so that included a buffet for 130 people, Chair covers/sashes and table linen, Decorations galore, Sweet cart, wine a plenty + corkage, my dress/veil/shoes/garter/evening flats/hair/make up/underwear, Suit hire for 3 men, 2 bridesmaid+2 flower girls dresses, flowers, gifts, cake, favours, photographer and dj etc. A lot of stuff was hand made (by my mil mostly, she was a godsend!).

I forgot to add that over £500 of that paid for the church. I think we did everything at quite a reasonable cost and everyone had a fantastic day. It was relaxed and loads of fun. No stuffiness or people standing around. Lots of food and booze Grin

Helenahandbag! You could be mirroring what I'm about to do! Except on the other side of the states! Even down to the "tension".

?15k (ish) 7 years ago tomorrow.

120 guests for a sitdown meal, upwards of about 200 later on. Church, hotel, honeymoon backpacking around SE asia for a month.

My parents paid for the hotel and my dress, PIL wrote a cheque which covered the rest.

Was fab, and we are still very happily married. I want to wear Jenny Packham again.

I didn't actually answer the whole question, sorry:

£25k, of which $10,000 CAD was a gift from my mother, £7k was a gift from DH's family, and the rest was ours.

We did end up paying for accommodation at our venue for quite a few overseas guests.

It was a beautiful wedding, wonderful memories, just amazing. I'm sure we could have had a wonderful day for less, but as we could do this we wanted to.

PosterEh, I hate to break it to you, but it's not inverse snobbery. The upper-middle classes have always been bemused by flashy weddings Wink

FurtherSupport · 06/08/2015 17:19

I have no idea. My parents paid and organised it all. I'd never even been to the venue for the reception before the day.

I was the complete opposite of Bridezilla. I just wanted to get married and was entirely happy for my mum to organise it all the way she wanted. I did choose my own dress....

I realise I might be unusual but all this nonsense about it being the best day of your life, really? If a flashy party's the best thing that ever happens to you there's something wrong IMO.

About £13000 in 2009, half paid by parents in law.
Country hotel 3miles from home for ceremony and reception. Sat in july.
70 guests
Dress made by me £60 for material + £50 shoes etc, £40 bridesmaid dress, £150 new suit for dh. Used undies and makeup already had, sister did my hair !
Friends made cake
Flowers inc in hotel deal
Included champagne arrival, ceremony, tea and cakes, 3 course dinner with wine/ juice, country dance in eve, childminder for kids entertainment
Cost included hire of all 15 hotel rooms overnight + breakfast

Most important to me was nice atmosphere, quality food and ability for v close relatives and all elderly guests to stay overnight.

6k (excl honeymoon) in 2009. Big families so we had 90 odd to a full sit down meal with canapés etc. I didn't really enjoy my wedding day. I was young and didn't know how to properly plan it - everything was rushed/ make do. Venue were really unprofessional and things we paid for didn't materialise. I do get upset when I think about as I had looked forward to 'my wedding day'.

Having said that, my husband is perfect. I am a teacher and my students asked for a wedding photo - I showed them one and they said 'miss you looked like a princess'. It made me feel nice as I didn't feel like that on the day.

This has made me sad Sad

Wedding abroad - party at home, can't remember how much it cost maybe 2-3k for the party of 160 guests! £200 on a last minute cheap dress and a suit, (we'd planned to wear jeans), 10k on rings and 10k on honeymoon. 15 years ago. Parents gave us £1k wedding gift.
