to switch off when DD2 starts talking about her latest obsession

Drives me mad - she doesn't just like things she becomes utterly obsessive - and talks endlessly about it - Pokamon, Moshi Monsters, Football, Minecraft...

Currently it's Hamsters - she has save up money to buy one (I haven't said she can) she's been online for days researching them and even got herself a little cage (on the pretence of it being for the guinea pig when she had it in her room)

I love the little loony madly but she's been talking hamster facts for 2 days straight and I am going mad!

I quite like Harry Potter, too! At least, I used to.

Now I hate Harry Potter with a cold fiery passion.

As i said upthread, just be grateful it isn't your DH. Mines latest obsession is something called 'Airsoft' - it's like paintball but with better more realistic twats guns. He talks about it morning, noon and night. Barely a day goes by without the door knocking and a UPS guy delivering some new grenade or refill plastic ball bearings (all ordered from the US so DH has not factored in the importing tax charges so i usually then have to stump up another fifty quid at the door). The bathroom floor is covered in Airsoft magazines and the house has guns and holsters and boxes and general kipple everywhere. DH regularly disappears to go to the loo and sneaks up to the loft where i can hear him shooting. He hides round doorways pretending he is clearing rooms etc Blush . The other day i put a pair of socks on and thought 'these are uncomfortable' only to find a ball bearing in the end - he had snuck a gun into our dressing room and shot the place up Hmm .

He is desperate for me to go airsofting with him, and at first i agreed, i thought 'not really my thing, but i do laser quest with my nieces and that's okay'. But now i am so fucking sick of it all, i can't bear even the mention of it. He doesn't seem to understand (altho i do try to explain frequently) that the more he goes on about things, he isn't increasing my likelihood of wanting to join in, he is making me hate it.

In his more self aware moments he can see, but says he just can't control it. He says he knows it must be hard to put up with but imagine how it feels in his head?! it's harder for him feeling so overwhelmed with something.

It's like the programme Malcolm in the Middle where Hal has a series of obsessions. In one Lois says 'aah you are at stage 4 already' and Hal says 'you'd better freeze the bank accounts' and she says 'i already have'. Grin

Adult sufferer here, too. It's really become quite ridiculous seems to have kicked it up a notch since empty nest or some such explanation/excuse. In any event activities and pursuits of RL seem to have been replaced by a series of obsessive interests and "quests" which involve vast amounts of time on internet. Currently in the throes of a very recent but super powerful one which is admittedly pretty silly at best and pointless (and embarrassing!) at worst.

Thanks to everyone for sharing. Feeling a little less alone and weird in this.

My teen DS does Airsoft! One of the things I quite like about it is most the other people there are middle aged dads (!)

Bored teen DD demands "Are YOU a Snape apologist?" She's not got ASC, just an attention seeker (sigh).

I am watching a film with ds( while on MN ) he then said that lady is like my dad ( who he hasn't seen for 5 years) ..panic question...In what way is she like your Dad? ..

I also bought DS a book how Santa really works when he was doubting and he got the book out to test me!!

Yes I find minecraft mind numbing never mind listening to a conversation about it
