A parking one!

We have put in a new driveway and the council have dropped the kerb outside. However, they have failed to remove the markings that there used to be a parking space there. The markings are a bit of a mess as the old markings are there alongside the guides the council have put there to show where they are moving the parking space to.

A young girl has come along, parked her car, put her headphones in and walked off in the direction of the town centre. I didn't have time to run out and stop her and the headphones meant shouting after her wouldn't have done any good.

Would I be unreasonable to request that the council send a warden out to give her a ticket?

There is no way that she could have missed that she was parking across our drive. It's large and has a big car parked on it. There were 2 parking spaces there and our drive is bang in the middle... she has parked her small Fiesta in the middle too. So right over the dropped kerb with no attempt to leave any room for access. Had it still been a parking space she would be effectively stopping another car from being able to park there. If she had parked at the beginning or end of the bay we could have still got off our driveway.

So What would you do?

How do you get the phone numbers Red?

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 29/07/2015 19:27

Yes the police do sit and ring car owners up, personally usually a couple a week. If we can't get a phone number then cops might be sent out depending in the circumstances

What a shame they don't have time to actually do any proper policing. Very sad.

ladygracie · 29/07/2015 19:28

Lilmisssunshine - what is your problem? How do you know how much money the OP has? I don't get paid until Friday & have literally what is in my purse only (less than £10) until then. I would not have enough money for a taxi, never mind 2. So it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the op doesn't either.

BothEndsBurning · 29/07/2015 19:32

It really does pay to get to know all your neighbours. I'm sure I could have found someone who would have been able to help in some way if I'd been in a predicament like this.

NoisyOyster · 29/07/2015 19:35

Well woopdedoo both. So you know your neighbours. Not everyone does

wowfudge · 29/07/2015 19:37

I'm guessing that with a surname and address it is not beyond the wit of man (or police officer) to look them up on edq or even phone directory enquiries. If the number is ex-directory I would think there must be a way for the cops to get hold of it.

Sparklingbrook · 29/07/2015 19:37

There can be loads of reasons you can't pick your child up from nursery (car breakdown comes to mind). So it's helpful to have a backup plan if possible.

LilMissSunshine9 · 29/07/2015 19:40

I don't have a problem just find it nonsensical the level of drama over one day being blocked in your driveway and of course they have money the fact they just had their driveway done and paid to have the kerb dropped is indicative that they are not lacking money and living on the breadline.

The problem is the road still has bays marked and were there before OP had driveway and kerb done and since the markings are still there people can rightly assume they can park there. OP shouldn't get all worked up over it because those markings are still there. Should just get onto the council to get them removed.

Furthermore its just one incident I would have more empathy if it was an ongoing daily issue but its just 1 time I mean fgs get some perspective.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 29/07/2015 19:41

LadyGracie - if OP's child is in nursery now, it must be a private nursery, as schools have broken up for summer holidays. Private nurseries are expensive, so I'm sure a taxi fare would not exactly break the bank.
(Just putting 2+2 together)
I agree, it is annoying to be blocked in, it's happened to me. Infuriating. But it's not the end of the world.

What would you have done, OP, if your car had not started when it was nursery pick-up time? Would you have had to call a taxi then?
I had to do it once for an important hospital appointment. It cost over £50, but it was necessary. A one-off emergency. Annoying, but had to be done.

TheHormonalHooker · 29/07/2015 19:41

Christ on a bike! Some of you have got massive attitude problems tonight! Hmm

The police might be able to find our phone numbers, and I'm interested as to how, but it's really beyond the wit of most men and women due to the security advice we have had wrt DH's job!

wowfudge · 29/07/2015 19:42

Is your username ironic MissSunshine?

heyheyheygoodbye · 29/07/2015 19:42

When I bought my car I had to register as the owner, and give name/address/phone number/email. Doesn't everyone? Surely the police just get the info from the DVLA? Or have I watched too many crime dramas where detectives are always waving bits of paper and saying 'the car is registered to one Name Namerson' and dragging their partner off to solve a crime.

Sparklingbrook · 29/07/2015 19:43

But people change their place of work/email/ mobile number all the time but don't have to tell the DVLA.

TheHormonalHooker · 29/07/2015 19:45

I've never given my email address or phone number to the DVLA.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 29/07/2015 19:45

That's great for a proper crime, HeyHey. Not necessary for a car parked across a driveway, though. Waste of police resources. (IMO)

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 29/07/2015 19:46

I've never given my email address or phone number to the DVLA.

Good point - me neither!

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 19:47

I have a useless drunk for a husband that I am trying to get rid of. So my usual backup plan is gone.

NoisyOyster · 29/07/2015 19:48

op, go have a cup of tea, put the TV on and watch something mind numbing for a few hours Flowers

LilMissSunshine9 · 29/07/2015 19:49

No not ironic at all I just prefer not to get stressed over things like being blocked in for one day on my driveway rather just get on with my day and be happy than let small random one off incidents piss me off to the point I am calling the police over it.

TheHormonalHooker · 29/07/2015 19:53

Well that goes some way to exlplaining why you're so stressed holidays. Flowers

Tomorrow get on to the council about removing those bays, it'll be one less thing to worry about. You don't want to be blocked in again, especially being pregnant.

heyheyheygoodbye · 29/07/2015 19:54

Evans I was just saying I assumed that's how the police would get the details.

When I bought my car I was asked for my phone number/email on the DVLA form (to get a registration certificate) but I suppose people do change them and not update. But if she is a young, and therefore fairly new, driver, perhaps her info was still accurate.

WHO KNOWS

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 29/07/2015 19:54

The problem is the road still has bays marked and were there before OP had driveway and kerb done and since the markings are still there people can rightly assume they can park there

I read it that the woman had parked across the middle of two former bays, so even that doesn't really hold fast.

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 19:56

Some of you are making assumptions about my finances. I am actually pretty broke right now. i had money to get a drive put in and now it's spent. It ran over budget and I am unexpectedly now in the middle of trying to split from my husband.

Yes my son goes to a private nursery as do the children of most working parents I know. And yes it's expensive But I can't afford not to work.

How has a thread about someone parking stupidly turned into me having to justify my life?

QuietIsland · 29/07/2015 19:59

Hissy · 29/07/2015 19:59

I'm just registering a car in my name this week, the form asks for a telephone number and/or address.
