A parking one!

We have put in a new driveway and the council have dropped the kerb outside. However, they have failed to remove the markings that there used to be a parking space there. The markings are a bit of a mess as the old markings are there alongside the guides the council have put there to show where they are moving the parking space to.

A young girl has come along, parked her car, put her headphones in and walked off in the direction of the town centre. I didn't have time to run out and stop her and the headphones meant shouting after her wouldn't have done any good.

Would I be unreasonable to request that the council send a warden out to give her a ticket?

There is no way that she could have missed that she was parking across our drive. It's large and has a big car parked on it. There were 2 parking spaces there and our drive is bang in the middle... she has parked her small Fiesta in the middle too. So right over the dropped kerb with no attempt to leave any room for access. Had it still been a parking space she would be effectively stopping another car from being able to park there. If she had parked at the beginning or end of the bay we could have still got off our driveway.

So What would you do?

Yes I got to the nursery though much later than I'd wanted to.

What makes it worse Coconutty is that this is clearly something that doesn't happen everytime so for a one-off event of being blocked in its just OTT drama.

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 18:52

I never said they rang her at work. I've no idea how they contacted her only that they did.

Looks like it all worked out in the end.

I'm intrigued as to how they'd get hold of us, tbh. The DVLA don't hold phone numbers, we're ex-directory. Do they sit ringing through every mobile phone supplier in the land until they find the one who supplies your mobile? Confused

Flamingopie · 29/07/2015 18:55

This thread has got odder and odder Hmm

KittensOnAPlane · 29/07/2015 18:55

theres a pic of a car being shared on a local spotted on facebook

parked across a driveway - they're about to be towed though -

oddfodd · 29/07/2015 18:56

Glad you got it sorted holidays :)

As someone who lives in a holiday destination and with a dropped kerb, I know how stressful and annoying people blocking your drive is.

SoupDragon · 29/07/2015 18:57

This thread has got odder and odder hmm

How?

LilMissSunshine9 · 29/07/2015 19:00

Maybe you should direct your energy towards the council and getting the bay sorted out instead

RosePetels · 29/07/2015 19:02

Op you had a right to be pissed off, I do think it would of been a lil mean to get her towed considering the signs and she's probably a new driver, then again that's not your problem.
Now she got a ticket she won't park there again hopefully. I think you should pressure the council to remove old signs just so this doesn't happen again

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/07/2015 19:06

She might not be able to park at work (I work in nHS and cannot acess half the car-parks so have to find on street parking)

She will most probably park there again when you're not in the drive and you won't know.
But hopefully, she won't park like an arse.

If her Dad told her you were Angry and pg then she should , fingers crossed, park a bit more responsibly.
You don't want to be blocked in when you need to get somewhere quickly.

YY to getting the bay sorted.

I'd imagine that a road near a station and town centre is going to be a nightmare to manouvre round at the best of times.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 29/07/2015 19:07

I'm with Coconutty and LilMissSunshine on this, TBH. As annoying as it is to have someone block you in, it would not have been beyond the realms of possibility to get a taxi to the nursery (or ask a friend, neighbour or relative to give you a lift).

We had two high-value motorbikes stolen from our home a few months ago. The police were too busy to follow it through thoroughly, apparently due to lack of funding. Yet here are people wasting their time (and our taxes) getting them to run around for nonsense like this.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/07/2015 19:08

Oh and I hope you told her Dad that she was that close to having her car towed. It was only that you waited and the Police/Council didn't send someone, and she was lucky yo get away with a ticket.
Anyone else would've done worse.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/07/2015 19:09

So how did you get to nursery OP?

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 19:13

I drove to the nursery once her Dad had taken the car.

Why is there an assumption that everyone has funds for taxis or relatives and friends who are around to take them places? If I did don't you think I would?

OP posts:
holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 19:14

And I called 101 after being told to by the council. After I had waited in for hours for this girl to come back.

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 29/07/2015 19:14

Oh good. That was handy

balletgirlmum · 29/07/2015 19:16

Having just registered & taxed several company cars at work I should know this but can't remember but I think the firms ask for phone no & email address.

LilMissSunshine9 · 29/07/2015 19:17

Well OP its not like this is a regular issue for you otherwise you would of made that clear so to have to make a one-off taxi run isn't exactly going to bankrupt you.

Quite frankly given the fact there is a marked bay on the road and signs despite your kerb being dropped she can park there. We can debate what a shitty thing it is to do till the cows come home but its not illegal and the only way it will be is when the bay is removed.

Redglitter · 29/07/2015 19:20

Yes the police do sit and ring car owners up, personally usually a couple a week. If we can't get a phone number then cops might be sent out depending in the circumstances

FuckingLiability · 29/07/2015 19:22

The OP has had a bit of a hard time on this thread for no real reason that I can see. She hasn't been at all unreasonable and explained several times that she has no option but to drive and couldn't get her car out over the pavement. I fail to see why people are nitpicking over imaginary taxis and lifts.

We've had people park over our dropped kerb too and it's a real PITA when someone is so selfish and oblivious that they don't notice or care where they park.

Glad you got it sorted, holidays.
