to feel quite sorry for Walter Palmer?

Not very sorry what with him being a humungous twat for liking big game hunting, obviously. But seriously, worldwide opprobium and trial by media for partaking in a legal activity (he claims his permits were legit) that is a significant income stream for an impoverished third world country?

Also, while I'm at it, the death of a lion makes headlines? When did you last see a headline about the deaths of six million people in the civil war in the DRC?

A murder? Get a grip gem24.

ego maybe not completely sure!

Definitely more money from inheritance (so to speak) goes to the rspca than to cancer research. Am not saying that's wrong, but we do have a reputation in this country for loving animals (generally of the cute/cuddly/charasmatic variety and not the battery hen variety).

Doesn't in any way justify what a rich, white, American male has done. Will probably get away with too while the local poor and/or nonwhites don't.

Bythedowns2 · 30/07/2015 07:44

He has previous for hunting outside of legal areas in the U.S. And previously fined no sympathy here, he was arrogant enough to think he got away with it?' Pleading ignorance

Mia1415 · 30/07/2015 07:47

I've absolutely no sympathy for him & I hope it makes others think twice.

Mrsjayy · 30/07/2015 08:01

Its the arrogance of the man that got me hunters dont care for regulations or boundries they just want to kill something a maned lion is the ultimate prize , he should face the same charges as the rest of them I agree with pp.

songbird · 30/07/2015 08:03

Couldn't give a shit if it's legal (not that it was, he knew EXACTLY what was happening), it's completely immoral and baffling to me. Legally he deserves what he gets, and agree that if he loses his business and therefore the means to go big game hunting again is no terrible thing.

But, but, but the worldwide frothing frenzy does unsettle me slightly. We've seen it before, people get their facts wrong, vigilante groups target innocent people, all sorts of crap gets caught up in the frenzy and I don't think that's good for society.

And apparently it's barely hitting the news in Zimbabwe!

NewFlipFlops · 30/07/2015 08:35

YABU OP. This is a horrible story. There must be something wrong with a person who is willing to spend that much money on killing innocent creatures.

TwistInMySobriety · 30/07/2015 08:40

Ironically if he had murdered someone no-one would have heard of him... I'll look up that book paxmanfan, it sounds interesting. I think social media have unleashed a whole new dimension to Hannah Arendt's theory of mob mentality.

I don't particularly feel sorry for him but I find it really unsettling that total
strangers would wish death on another human being and actually quite enjoy thinking/talking about it.
The 2 minute hate comment was spot on.
Makes one wonder about human nature sometimes."

Sparklingbrook · 30/07/2015 08:48

I do think if he and 2 accomplices lured a human out, shot them with a crossbow, left them for 40 days to die then skinned them and hacked their head off it would have made the papers.

I totally agree with this. Watch and it'll be someone else in a couple of weeks and this fellow will be forgotten. The people making the most noise have no commitment to the issues that they are so desperately trying to convince everyone they are passionate and 'right on' about - they just like being in a mob.

MNpostingbot · 30/07/2015 09:01

I agree dragons, i don't condone what happened, and the facebook thing doing the rounds showing a camaraman properly shooting the animals with a lens not a gun is how I see this. I "get" why people hunted in the past, but there is so much more knowledge of endangered species now, why isn't a photo taken my yourself enough of a memento, you can still track the animals etc.
I know half the thread will disagree (and I never have and never will hunt) but I don't actually care about the deerhunting and foxhunting as they aren't endangered.

But wishing death and torture on someone over this is as sick as the act itself, possibly more so.

And not to spoil the petition party - and they should still be signed as they will raise awareness and hopefully save the next Cecil from similar - but they won't actually have an effect on this case, the usa aren't going to be extraditing their own citizen for hunting, illegal or otherwise.
I wouldn't even be stunned if he keeps his business afloat. There's enough pro hunting people in minnesota that will switch over to him in the aftermath of this. Yes US public opinion would appear to be hugely against him on social media, but that will be California and new york driven, Minnesota wont care, he's only closed because of the short term security risk.

SlaggyIsland · 30/07/2015 09:04

Fuck Walter Palmer. I've been horrified by this issue for well over two decades, since I saw footage of a canned lion hunt in South Africa as a teenager. The French "hunter" was too incompetent to make a clean kill so he pumped bullet after bullet into the lion as it snarled at him.
I was hysterically upset after seeing that. I honestly don't give a fuck what happens to any of the cunts who do this for fun.
The lion Palmer killed had an horrendous, slow death. As bad as what I saw was, this was many times worse.
I hope he loses everything and that he never has the means to do this to another animal.

Mrsjayy · 30/07/2015 09:06

If he had paid to hunt and kill a human I am pretty certain we would have heard about it please dont try and make out posters value human life less that isn't true.

Sparklingbrook · 30/07/2015 09:10

Exactly Mrsjayy.

Mrsjayy · 30/07/2015 09:13

Xpost sparkling I didnt see you said the same thing.

JaWellNoFine · 30/07/2015 09:15

MrsJayy
To be fair I do value the lion more.
There are close to 8 billion of us and 200000 lions

lilacblossomtime · 30/07/2015 09:23

I think he would make a good villain in a thriller. Sadistic dentist with a creepy smile who loves to shoot endangered big game animals with some sort of super crossbow.

WyrdByrd · 30/07/2015 09:32

He's an entitled arsehole who deserves all the shit he gets, as does anybody who hunts to kill the inedible

This.

Regardless of what may or may not have gone 'wrong'/not been legit in this instance which I'm highly dubious about anyway, he made the choice to deliberately seek out a wild animal and kill it for fun/showing off purposes - I can't even begin to wrap my head about what kind of utter wanker would choose to do that.

Reserving my sympathy for his colleagues/employees who will also be affected by his disgusting behaviour through no fault of their own.

TheOldMonkey · 30/07/2015 09:36

Also his ridiculously white teeth are unacceptable. Fucker.

BakingCookiesAndShit · 30/07/2015 09:54

I have zero sympathy for a man who knew exactly what he was doing, knew it was illegal and got the hell out of Dodge before he could be held to account for it. Yet another example of a white man thinking he can do what he likes in a developing country with no consequences, as they have from time immemorial.

The man is a criminal and should be held to account. He should be, but won't be extradited to Zimbabwe and face trial. I understand Zimbabwe has some fairly draconian prisons which might make him think again about committing similar crimes.

He is, however, no different than the various other white men who go to developing countries expressly to commit crimes they wouldn't be able to commit in their home countries without great risk. I'm thinking of men who travel purely to abuse children.

Travelling abroad to commit crime isn't unheard of, what should be happening is similar naming and shaming of everyone who does it, not just this singular criminal.

And yes, YABU to feel sorry for a criminal who got caught.

OttiliaVonBCup · 30/07/2015 09:58

40 grand to shoot a lion combo - one make one female
same to shoot an elephant

Why on earth?

Why is this legal?
Listening to LBC and a cunt there is saying now he wants to go and shoot lions as soon as the little lefties lay off.
shocking.

SpecificOcean · 30/07/2015 10:00

Yabvu.
Sympathy? Not a chance. I hope Karma is real and he gets his comeuppance in the worst way possible. Wanker.

Newtobecomingamum · 30/07/2015 10:00
