To think the British government reaction to Calais migrants is pathetic?

It's like they're just putting their heads in the sand. Meanwhile people are dying, hauliers are being threatened, holiday makers having trips ruined.

I'd do the following:

Make clear any illegal entries will be turned back to France. Make clear there are not limitless jobs, housing etc in the UK. Make clear no benefits to new migrants (if this isn't the case then change the law).

Presumably the migrants think the UK has lots of money and opportunities, otherwise they wouldn't be risking their lives to leave France (a safe country).

Collaborate you might want to brush up on your history. Sudan was part of the British colonial empire, and Ethiopia/Eritrea were occupied by Britain during WW2.

HowD · 29/07/2015 10:13

The young Men get Asylum then send for their family.

IndridCold · 29/07/2015 10:13

The EU should fund an education programme in these home countries, and recruit and train the migrants from Calais to deliver it.

The migrants will get a safe trip back home, they will have a job when they get there, and it might help prevent more people risking their lives.

Obviously this won't work for places like Syria, but it might reduce the numbers to more manageable levels.

LurkingHusband · 29/07/2015 10:17

The EU should fund an education programme in these home countries

rather than spend money on EU citizens ?

DoctorTwo - the bbc website this morning says AFP says an official count at the beginning of July found that about 3,000 migrants - mainly from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and Afghanistan - were camping in Calais and trying to get across the Channel.

We didn't invade the first 3, and as far as Afghanistan is concerned, do you really think the Taliban was a better bet for them?

Eritrea was once an Italian colony, it was 'liberated' from Italy by the British in 1941. The British then confiscated Eritrean industries as war compensation. They then agreed to cede it to Ethiopia as a reward for their support in WW2. Eritrea & Ethiopia have been in dispute with each other for many years. It really is a mess, but one that Europe has helped to create.

Currently, all males Eritreans are conscripted into the army at 18, and they remain conscripted for life, having to basically work for the gvt for shit money. There is no choice in the matter. Personally if someone offered me a way out of that I would risk anything to take it, rightly or wrongly. While I think the situation at Calais is dreadful, I feel very sorry for the people just hoping escape a terrible situation in their own country.

juneau · 29/07/2015 10:32

I've asked this before but no one can give me the answer. If these people are running away from danger how come they are all young men. Where are all the women, children and old people? Are these men expecting to reach the UK and be given a house and enough money to be able to send for their families or are they coming here for another reason?

Well, most of them are economic migrants. I've seen lots of interviews done at Calais with migrants and they're all 'looking for a better life'. They've also been sold the lie that once they're in Britain they'll get housing, work, money to live off, etc. Except when you're illegal you qualify for none of those things. A recent study my MigrationWatch showed that after 10 years many of those coming here illegally are still living on the breadline, hand to mouth, because most of them arrive here with nothing more than a desire to make it to Britain. They don't have education or language skills or anything that would help them to get a decent job, so they're stuck on the margins permanently. But the traffickers who make money from bringing them here don't give a shit about that. They make a living from selling the lie that Britain will provide them with a living, if they can just make it here in the first place.

JamNan · 29/07/2015 10:33

Many want to come to the UK because English is their second language plus they have been sold a pack of lies by the traffickers.

juneau · 29/07/2015 10:33

And as for persuading them not to come in the first place, the only way to stop them coming is to swiftly return those that make it. If you do that regularly enough you will eventually get the message across that its not worth the money or the perilous journey, if you arrive only to be sent straight back.

TiedUpWithString · 29/07/2015 10:36

There are women and children. The BBC ran an article about a woman who was being routinely raped by fellow migrants (male) at one of the camps at Calais and she got rescued by a charity and brought to the UK to live in one of the centres until her case was looked at. The centre has security and a female only block and she was delighted. She was a genuine assylum seeker but used a smuggling 'company' to get her to Calais.

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 10:39

even breadline life here is probably more attractive than staying in the country of origin?

LurkingHusband · 29/07/2015 10:41

They don't have education or language skills or anything that would help them to get a decent job

If they can't make it in their own countries, how could they hope to make it here ?

If it wasn't for the fact that the governments in the originating countries couldn't organise a cake stall, it would be an interesting conspiraloon theory to imagine they are deliberately sending these migrants to us. Maybe they've read HHGTTG, and we're actually being flooded with telephone sanitizers, and hairdressers ...

WhetherOrNot · 29/07/2015 10:43

And as for persuading them not to come in the first place, the only way to stop them coming is to swiftly return those that make it.

Seeing as they destroy all paperwork and passports.............HOW do you know which country to return them to?

Moreshabbythanchic · 29/07/2015 10:46

Why aren't they being taken back to their own countries? They say that they have no papers to say where they come from but whenever a tragedy happens like last night its known that the person who was killed was Sudanese. So they must have an idea where they are from.

onedayiwillmissthis · 29/07/2015 11:09

I would imagine that their lives back home were so shit that no humane sensible deterent will work.Sad

But if the government's of Europe do not start taking some kind of action to resolve this situation then the end result at some point will probably be disastrous.

The way of life which we in Europe take for granted will cease. Freedom to travel, food supply, security within our own borders. Desperate people will do desperate things...they do not abide by rules or law.

These illegal immigrants ( and yes, I do call them that...they could have sought asylum prior to reaching Calais) are desperate!

At some point their numbers will become sufficiently large that we will become less tolerant...how will all us MN'rs feel once we cannot holiday as we wish, buy the food and other items we enjoy ?

How much change to our way of life are we really prepared to acceptHmm

I am fearful for what we will do in the end. What solutions will be foundSad Sad Sad

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 29/07/2015 11:13

For god's sake.
We don't need to be spending money on building now walls to keep them out.
We need to be spending it on helping them.
It's everyone's responsibility.

HowD · 29/07/2015 11:14

The main problem is once here, integration. Learn our language and culture then fit in. Problems arise when you have as I experienced volunteering, of Women with poor English, not integrated in siciety suffering DV.

Tenieht · 29/07/2015 11:14

Europe looks like it will be overwhelmed by 3rd world migrants if this isn't stopped. These people need to stay in their own counties , most are absolutely not asylum seekers they are virtually all fit young men , no women kids or elderly . It's a huge unfairness for them to be taken as a quota of asylum when many other needy people who go into camps or proper genuine cases get pushed back by these trafficked queue jumpers.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 29/07/2015 11:16

They are treated like vermin by the French police. Beaten up. Pushed around. Anyone who tries to help them by giving them some leftover food is arrested.
If they are in Calais and the UK, willing to be treated like scum, imagine how awful what they are running from is.

Tenieht · 29/07/2015 11:17

And for all Tony Abbott being a dick, thank god here in Aus we've stopped the boats via having the whole border issue controlled by the military, and the tide of human misery and death which was washing up on our shores has now stopped, even the Aussie Labor party is now in agreement and would continue the policy.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 29/07/2015 11:17

Tenieht "They need to stay in their own countries." Would you stay in Syria?!
Why do you think you should gave more right to be in the first world than them. It's ludicrous. We're all humans. Being born somewhere isn't an achievement and it shouldn't give you more rights than anyone else.

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 11:22

Is it fair that we who by accident of birth enjoy a modern technologically advanced lifestyle while others live in medieval conditions?
We can argue that this is inevitable nothing we can do etc but as the inequality grows the problems of the dysfunctional third world will spill over and threaten to drag us all down to a more primitive level of existence where we have fewer freedoms ?

Ultimately it is in everyone's best interests to at least try and reduce the disparity between us and them?

Moreshabbythanchic · 29/07/2015 11:26

oneday I am starting to think that this is the master plan to flood Europe with these migrants to deliberately lower our standard of living to keep us in our place. The super rich, politicians etc are so full of their own importance and consider us plebs to be unworthy of a decent life. Bringing in more immigrants will lead to fewer jobs, poor housing, poor education and so on. Benefits are already being cut, police forces being cut and the more jobless, homeless people there are will lead to more crime.

I dread what sort of life our children and grandchildren will be living.

onedayiwillmissthis · 29/07/2015 11:43

susanneyeswecan...but we will not be able to end the disparity by allowing unlimited numbers of people to enter our countries.

Millions around the world live in conditions we wouldn't keep an animal in...poverty that we cannot fully comprehend...and worse!

But...but...they cannot be absorbed into our countries successfully. Impossible. Our land area, our resources, our money are insufficient to allow this.

Additionally our attitudes, our way of thinking and accepting people's equality, sexuality, right to worship as they wish...are impossible for many of them to accept. It wouldn't end well.Sad

They have to be kept in their own homes in their own countries...AND... we must ASSIST THEM to bring about change for the better there.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 29/07/2015 11:44

At least our children aren't starving or being buried alive. Unlike the children of many of the poor migrants.
'Oh poor us, lots of foreigners are desperate to come here, what a terrible life we have.'
Fucking ridiculous.

The80sweregreat · 29/07/2015 11:45

a presenter on breakfast this morning showed the fence that runs close to the trains, just an ordinary fence you might see in someones back garden! no wonder its so easy for them to get close to the tunnel. the whole thing is a disgrace, the politicians seem to be sitting on their hands - DC doesn't want his numerous holidays interrupted by trying to sort something out..
its been going on for weeks now and just getting worse. It does seem that the rest of Europe don't care as long as they are not having to deal with it!
