To think I should have been able to buy half a drink??

Went out today and for a treat went to a cafe as dd1 and dd2 wanted a drink

Dd1 chose hers and dd2 decided she would like a creamy fruit type drink. Dd2 has type 1 diabetes so we went on the website to work out the carbs in a small drink, it was quite a lot so thought I'd get her half a small drink instead but this proved to be quite a problem
The first person said no when I requested exactly half of a small drink ( they could do it as all measurements are on the jugs etc). I asked why and was told 'no we can't do custom drinks" so I asked to see the manager and was told "no we can't do half" and "I don't know what to charge for half a small drink"

I suggested that perhaps half the cost of a small drink might be a good figure but was told again "no, we can't do it"
I explained again why we needed just half and said could I not just pay for a small drink but they just measure half instead. "No"again?

By this point dd2 was getting upset so I said "ok I will have a small drink and please can I have an extra cup?" To which they replied "no, just one cup" and I had had to then virtually beg for the drink to be split equally between two cups. Ridiculous

Yet again, dd has been upset and something simple like getting a drink has been complicated by diabetes and she is getting more and more negative about things due to incidents like this

Surely I should have been able to buy half a drink? Or at the very least a small one split into two cups without having to beg?!

I agree it will be about the till and/or the staff thinking you are pain in the arse and not wanting to be nice to you.

I work in a restaurant and people ordering things off the menu annoy me, dis-proportionally so, if I'm having a bad day.

Things off menu aren't in the till. Adding things to the till system takes far too long to do while a customer is waiting so I have to work out how much it should cost based on other similar items and then find something in the till of that value or start pissing about adding % discounts to the bill to try and find the right price.

I also don't much like my job or people in general so may not have given you a cup either if I thought you were just being a difficult customer.

However if I'd known why you were asking I'd have gone out of my way to be extra helpful.

Did the barista know why you were asking?

The AIBU on this thread is - to be able to buy half a drink - without that part, the rest would not have happened. That is the part that obviously confused/annoyed the server. Can I have a drink and an extra cup? - probably no big deal. Can you make me half a drink, I'll only pay for half, and can you make it contain an exact amount of carbs, not half a gram more or less? Hmm

However, hedgehog's daughter will have to grow up knowing that she has to take into account her diabetes when choosing food and drink, that's the reality, and something she has to live with. How much better to show her that it can be dealt with calmly, rather than provoking confrontation and begging

And by the way, if I had epilepsy I'd be extremely careful about cinemas, or avoid them completely - we can't all do what we want all the time - some people can and that's great for them, some people can't, and we have to adjust and accommodate our disabilites/special needs, and the sooner we learn and accept it the better

Morloth go and have one of those donuts or cakes you love, you lecture people about sugar on one thread and then on another talk about the cake in your cupboard! Nasty

This, like everything is 90% about the phrasing, and unfortunately we'll never know how the conversation went...

"I'd love a Fruity Frappe but its too big for my daughter - can I get it in half that size"
" Sorry, we can't do that, because of how its measured, made, and charged on the till"...
"Oh, I understand, could I have a small one with 2 cups and I'll split it"..

Would probably have been met with a "yes of course"....

However

"My daughter who is severly diabetic wants 125mls of Fruity Frappe - your smallest size is 250mls - I want half a one"
"EHm, we can't really do that because of how its measured, made and charged on the till"
"Well charge me half, because I want half - she WANTS one but I've looked up the carbs and she can only have very controlled amount of carbs so she can only have 125mls......"
"Ehm...huge panic from Barista about the responsibility being placed upon them....
