ExitPursuedByABear · 28/07/2015 10:40

R4 this morning. Two women pronouncing it to rhyme with hole. I pronounce it to rhyme with towel.

Have I been saying it wrong all my life.

Come to think of it, I probably haven't said it that many times in my life.

Is there actually someone out there who collects trowels, or does she collect trolls?

Did I miss that bit?

Smellyoulateralligator · 28/07/2015 22:55

It's that orange, Angie?

ItMustBeBunnies · 28/07/2015 22:57

Trowel / growl / towel

Toll (as in bells) to rhyme with mole
Toll (as in toll-bridge) to rhyme with moll

NobodyLivesHere · 28/07/2015 22:57

Troll, doll, moll, foll(ow)
Roll, toll.
Trowel, towel, dowel, vowel. (2 syllables - trow-el)

The end.

AngieBolen · 28/07/2015 23:05

Purple, orange, silver and doll. I think.

ItMustBeBunnies - I think it's a toll bell, but a toll (tole) bridge.

ExitPursuedByABear · 28/07/2015 23:05

I agree.

How do you pronounce owl then? My DP says ow-el but I say it more like ow with an 'l' at the end.

It's been a subject of many heated discussions!!

maras2 · 28/07/2015 23:18

Rhymes with bowel and Simon Cowell

gobbin · 28/07/2015 23:18

Was the person on R4 feom the Black Country? They put random 'w' sounds in words when spoken. This might account for troll becoming tro-well.

densyr87 · 28/07/2015 23:39

This made me laugh so much I nearly choked on a bit of cake.

First you make these poor women have a completely fictional collection of trowels that they don't actually have, then you accuse them of mispronouncing the name of their completely fictional collection. They didn't stand a chance against you, did they? Grin

AngieBolen · 28/07/2015 23:54

Kirsty MacColl rhymes with Doll.

Scone rhymes with, bone, cone, Joan, loan, moan, tone.

Doll doesn't rhyme with much, sol, moll, lol.

Just to throw a trowel spanner into the works:

Anthony Powell pronounced his surname to rhyme with pole/hole/toll Wink

Colin Powell pronounces his surname to rhyme with trowel/towel/bowel BUT his first name rhymes with trollin'/Rollin' etc Confused

hugoagogo · 29/07/2015 10:36

Beer and bear sound the same when I say them too.

ExitPursuedByABear · 29/07/2015 10:59

I may have to start a trowel collection. But I don't think I need to sniff them first.

And they should have called those wild haired critters Gonks, then I would have known what they were talking about.

It rhymes with towel. If it rhymed with hole that would sound very similar o the male of my species.
