R4 this morning. Two women pronouncing it to rhyme with hole. I pronounce it to rhyme with towel.

Have I been saying it wrong all my life.

Come to think of it, I probably haven't said it that many times in my life.

troll rhymes with hole and toll

I can't see how doll rhymes with troll and toll Confused

Scone does rhyme with gone :)

HistoriaTrixie · 28/07/2015 17:06

Archaeologist here, trowel definitely sounds like 'towel'! As for troll, I haven't dug up any of those yet but if I did I imagine they'd rhyme with 'hole'. Grin

DextersMistress · 28/07/2015 17:08

Troll, doll, toll, moll, all the same. It's having an E at the end of the word which makes the o into oh as in hole, mole, vole.

None of which makes sense though when it comes to the word scone Grin

Bloody English language!

DextersMistress · 28/07/2015 17:11

doll rhymes with wall

Can't think of any regional accent that would make this right Confused

diddl · 28/07/2015 17:34

I would have thought that it should be roll with a t on the front!

Toll rhymes with roll for me.

Doll doesn't!

hugoagogo · 28/07/2015 18:10

It was a mole that lived in a hole wasn't it, not a troll? Blush

RoboticSealpup · 28/07/2015 18:32

My DH pronounces it "trovvel". Grin He says many things incorrectly, but I never correct him because his Greek accent is so cute. Wink

DextersMistress · 28/07/2015 18:40

Just realised roll doesn't fit my theory Grin

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 28/07/2015 18:45

Doll does not rhyme with wall, not even a little bit.

Pastamancer · 28/07/2015 19:01

Doll rhymes with hole, troll, roll, role, dole, mole etc.

Towel is pronounced towl, just the one syllable and trowel rhymes with this.

Scone rhymes with cone

Yellowbird54321 · 28/07/2015 19:10

Scone rhymes with gone.

Troll/toll/doll/hole all sound the same when I say them. But then I'm a New Zealander, and we have the whole bear/beer problem anyway. If I ever saw a bear in the woods and shouted to alert my companions they'd probably think I found a lager pond or something.

luckiestgirlintheworld · 28/07/2015 20:04

Troll, doll, toll all sound like hole to me. I'm from Kent.

Trowel sounds like towel. (Pronounced as one syllable)

AngieBolen · 28/07/2015 20:43

Trowel, towel, howl, growl, scowl.

Troll, hole, dole, mole, goal.

Doll, toll.

Scone, gone.

Tongue, bung.

You lot talk funny. Grin

ExitPursuedByABear · 28/07/2015 22:30

I ask again.

Doll. Toll.

Just wrong

It WAS a mole living in the hole.

When I say troll, it rhymes with doll and toll

Trowel and towel sound like growl.

honeylulu · 28/07/2015 22:47

Trowel. Rhymes with (Simon) Cowell. Simples.

bumbleymummy · 28/07/2015 22:48

I don't understand how doll sounds like toll. Toll rhymes with hole. Unless you're saying dole instead of doll?

Having given it some serious thought....toll rhymes with bread roll. My mistake.

Which means doll doesn't rhyme with anything. Like purple.

Smellyoulateralligator · 28/07/2015 22:51

Ok I concede that I'm wrong about toll (just looked it up) and i do sometimes make up my own pronounciations.

BumpTheElephant · 28/07/2015 22:52

I would say Trow-well as is "ow".
Troll rhymes with Doll.
