R4 this morning. Two women pronouncing it to rhyme with hole. I pronounce it to rhyme with towel.

Have I been saying it wrong all my life.

Come to think of it, I probably haven't said it that many times in my life.

I rhyme it with 'growl', rather than 'towel' where the 'e' is quite pronounced.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 28/07/2015 11:03

Yes it rhymes with Towel

DayLillie · 28/07/2015 11:05

The lady on Woman's Hour was definitely collecting Trolls and not trowels. Who would collect trowels (unless a builder?)?

AngieBolen · 28/07/2015 11:07

Are you sure she collects trowels and not trolls?

Trolls are very collectible.

A trowel is a trowel...or maybe I'm missing something Confused

ExitPursuedByABear · 28/07/2015 11:09

Still a weird way to pronounce trolls.

I used to collect those hairy things.

Well I'm glad that has been cleared up.

cardibach · 28/07/2015 11:16

We used to call them gonks
There is definitely a long oh in troll though, not a short o.

For me, troll rhymes with doll.

ExitPursuedByABear · 28/07/2015 13:14

How the jeff can doll rhyme with toll?

Isn't the English language wonderful.

Did no one else here these two women on R4 this morning. Even if they were talking about trolls not trowels, they had a damn funny way of pronouncing it.

OP posts:
HighwayDragon · 28/07/2015 13:41

d-o-lll
t-o-lll

tr-oh-ll

RainyJuly · 28/07/2015 13:50

To me:

toll rhymes with dole and soul.

doll rhymes with troll - or it did when I learned the story of the three Billy Goats Gruff! On the TV now I hear internet troll pronounced to rhyme with roll / dole /soul.

MaidOfStars · 28/07/2015 14:02

Troll rhymes with hole.
Toll rhymes with hole (but atoll rhymes with a doll).
Droll rhymes with hole.

Trowel rhymes with towel. I use a fairly short e for both.

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 28/07/2015 14:10

I am totally confused.

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 28/07/2015 14:11

I do think that baby penguins should be called penglings!

Apart from this ^ . This does not confuse me at all and I love it.

blackheartsgirl · 28/07/2015 15:23

We say trow..well here in North Wales. The second part of the word is pronounced. same as towel. That becomes tow..el. school is schoo..wel.
