AIBU?

To think that DH is being faintly ridiculous re dinner tonight

We have 5 students plus 5 of us at the moment. I am working until 7pm so it is DHs job to do dinner tonight as he finishes at 3. Girls need to eat at 6 to be out for 6:45. Just for background :)

Tonight's dinner is baked camembert. Dh would not make it last night because "i don't know what i am doing with it". I have told him about 11 times that all he needs to do is put it in the oven for 45 minutes, take it out and put it on a plate with baguette, salad and charcuterie (which we already have) We have eaten it many times before. On leaving this morning he said "can you send me a detailed recipe for this camembert thing"

I repeated what i have already repeated multiple times and why was he finding this incredibly simple dinner such a challengr to which i got the response "well where do i get the bread and fir example am i meant to take the plastic off"

At which point i got annoyed. Aibu to think that a 37 year old man who is a reasonably good cook, is used to making dinner for 11-12, manages a very challenging job in the police should be able to put some bloody camembert in the oven without copious instruction

It's all gone tits up here. DH walks through the door. I open the fridge and do the 'ta dah' pointing at the Camembert.

DH: 'I don't like Camembert. You do know it stinks don't you?'

Shock Sparklingbrook, how could he?!

That's tantamount to blasphemy!

I know! And I didn't feel like I could have it on my own so we had sweet and sour chicken.

Mind you fil took incompetence to a new level when dh asked if he'd chop carrots once. He asked what shape the carrots should be. Dh's response: Well they don't change shape when cooking do they?

This strikes me as a perfectly reasonable question - could be batons, round slices or cubes depending on their final destination

Sorry OP I lost all interest in your issue with DH after reading Camenbert, charcuterie and baguette. I have however decided to have just that for dinner tomorrow. So thanks!

We are a big fan of a baked Camembert! I would highly recommend buying a ceramic dish to bake it in as it seems to take it to another level!

A great way to feed lots with the additional cold cuts and gherkins etc. I also have a goat cheese baker too!

DH and I love a baked camembert + baguette + bottle of French red for dinner.

I've even made him cook it once.

I got excited at the talk of seaside towns with burnt out piers because.... I'm from there too! Except then I realised there's three bunt piers in a row on the south coast so maybe you're not all neighbours after all. still, I'll be at Lidl first thing.

The town on the East has a burnt out pier, the one in the middle has a partially burnt pier and the one in the West has a burnt out West pier, but its East pier is intact.

Right I hate to say this, but I purchased said camembert today and baked it and it was not good. overall taste was fine but it didn't go to the gooey place I expected. What temp are we cooking this on? I kept it fairly low, maybe 160 for a good 40 mins then turned it up cos it wasn't satisfactory. And even then it wasn't great - but I see this as chef error and want to know what and where went wrong?
i have two more in the fridge to practice with

Mine was the same. Almost a bit curdled.

Didn't admit it to DH mind you.

I did mine at 180 for 20 minutes. It was perfect and delectable. Maybe it needs hot and quick ?

In further adventures of my kitchen, tomorrow night's menu for the students is steak baguettes with homemade onion rings, chips and corn on the cob. The minute steaks were reduced at £3.50, chips were real cheapies from morrisons about 89p for the bag and corn on the cob 40p, baguettes £1. So £1.25 each

We are having sirloin steak £5.50, M&S minty pea puree 25p, M&S cornish new spuds 20p each for 3 packs, corn on cob 40p and M&S hollandaise 30p. Sirloins were about £2.77 each with reduction + two £1 off coupons and the rest were 90% off when i went into marks on the way back from work. So about £7.05 for 4 sirloin steak flashy dinners :)

ahhh now you're stealth bragging. I'm a yellow label addict but even I couldn't feed everyone like that. you obviously own Mark's and Spencer's

TEN individual cheeses in the oven, as well as whacking on the baguettes, salad and 'charcuterie'?"
I'm with your DH on this one, sorry.
You said chilli is his comfort zone. He'll be thinking "wargh FFS, TEN cheeses in there?!"
"When do they all need to be pulled out of the oven before frying to a crisp?"
"Right, I need to time the baguettes warming in the oven to come out at exactly the same time."
"Charcuterie? What the buggery chuff is THAT?! Oh, the cold meat selection in the fridge. Why didn't she just SAY that then instead of being all poncey doolally so I can just whack it on a plate. Hmm "
Let him do a big vat of chilli next time you're feeding ten people and everybody fed, full and non confused. Smile

minty pea puree

Oh blah bollocks. Just seen this and even more firmly in Camp DH. Mushy peas! Pea puree, indeed. Hmm

I think the "where do I get the bread" would have tipped me over the edge tbh. But then I got the hump with DH tonight for getting out soup spoons to eat pudding with, not dessert spoons. I may need to get out more

Purple swirl - they have a range oven. 10 cheeses in the oven = really not that hard in a large oven.

Sounds like you need fewer chips with your meal...

I've got a similar DH - I heard him on the phone to his boss as he's been off sick this week with chickenpox and he sounded so professional, yet he can't buy me a pair of trainers from Amazon for Christmas because 'I don't know how to do it' 'you're the Internet person' I had to buy them myself and he gave me the money.
