AIBU?

To think that DH is being faintly ridiculous re dinner tonight

We have 5 students plus 5 of us at the moment. I am working until 7pm so it is DHs job to do dinner tonight as he finishes at 3. Girls need to eat at 6 to be out for 6:45. Just for background :)

Tonight's dinner is baked camembert. Dh would not make it last night because "i don't know what i am doing with it". I have told him about 11 times that all he needs to do is put it in the oven for 45 minutes, take it out and put it on a plate with baguette, salad and charcuterie (which we already have) We have eaten it many times before. On leaving this morning he said "can you send me a detailed recipe for this camembert thing"

I repeated what i have already repeated multiple times and why was he finding this incredibly simple dinner such a challengr to which i got the response "well where do i get the bread and fir example am i meant to take the plastic off"

At which point i got annoyed. Aibu to think that a 37 year old man who is a reasonably good cook, is used to making dinner for 11-12, manages a very challenging job in the police should be able to put some bloody camembert in the oven without copious instruction

I just found this on lidl' actual website

Ingredients (Serves 4)

250g Camembert
Pinch of ground black pepper
4 tbsp olive oil
½ tsp dried Herbes de Provence
1 part-baked baguette (baked)
1 garlic clove (crushed)
2 celery sticks
2 carrots

Method

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan oven/gas mark 4.

Remove the Camembert from the box and unwrap. Very thinly slice the top off the cheese. Sprinkle the cheese with black pepper, 1 tbsp olive oil and the herbs.

Place the cheese back in its wooden box. Bake for 10-15 minutes until the cheese has melted inside.

For the garlic toast:
Cut the baguette into thin slices and bake in the oven with the Camembert for the last 5 minutes. Meanwhile heat the remaining olive oil in a small pan and then add the crushed garlic. Remove bread from the oven and brush the slices with the olive oil. Return to the oven for 3-4 minutes until crisp and golden. Allow to cool.

Trim the celery and carrots, then cut into strips and serve with the Camembert and toast.

We like having a house full. We figure if you are going to have 1 you may as well have 5 and make some money. It's only june - august. We had 7 for about a month, this is quiet !

I love MN - upshot is husband is being unreasonable & OP is being extremely unreasonable for making me want baked Camembert at 9am!

Plans today have changed, no NT property for the DCs we are off to Lidl Grin

This thread has really cheered me up. Mainly because I have my trip to lidl to look forward to later.

Also though, I've been in a bad humour since 5 seconds after waking up, which is why I stepped in a puddle of cold water on the bathroom floor. When I asked DH why he hadn't put the bath mat down, he replied that he "forgot" and "never knows which one it is anyway". He's 39.

Piratespoo - I take it out of the box. Take off the plastic. Put it back in the box. Wrap it in foil. Put it in the oven at 200 degrees for about 25 minutes.
Unwrap - take the box lid off - get a knife and put a cross on the top of the cheese - open up and dip away.
Yummy. For 89p I'm off to Lidl later as well!

Bugger

You can totally have baked camembert when you're pregnant! The baking will kill any listeria etc.

I know I'm missing the point of this thread, but I always thought of baked camembert as a starter. It's not really a meal is it, more a fat laden snack. I have nothing against fat by the way.

If you are going to Lidl then get yerselves a watermelon whil you are there. Really ripe, massive and £1.89 not £3-4 like the other supermarkets

fireside I agree, bread and cheese is not a main course. I'd want a few other things to supplement it if I was having it for dinner.

trufflehunterthebadger · 24/07/2015 09:10

We will be having it with some bread, salad, new potatoes and some cold cuts

But everyone of this thread seems to accept that it does constitute a main meal, so I must be wrong.

Id write ridiculous instructions.
walk to fridge (large white object in kitchen)
Locate groove in door.
Move hand to groove
extend fingers
pull
door will open
locate cheese
this is a round object in a smooth wrapping
remove from fridge
move hand to door
apply light pressure until door closes
turn body to walk away from fridge
take 6 steps in north east direction
etc etc

Or if i was too busy to write such, id say look, if putting cheese in the oven is beyond you, thats fine. Just make them whatever you can manage, its not a problem.

Nibble food is my favourite sort of eating. A spread of bread, cheese and meat with some pickles maybe is my idea of heaven.

In our house he or she who cooks gets to decide what is eaten......

I can't think of anything worse than baked camembert. Horribly French cheese.

And why bread and potatoes....

I think the OPS DH does not want this meal. . Give them beans on toast with cheddar cheese on the top.

Or get the students to make the meal!

How do you burn potatoes? Boiled potatoes?

It's just not 'man food' is it?

I think he doesn't want it and so is avoiding the cooking as an excuse to buy in a pizza or curry or something.

Did he boil the pan dry perchance ?

I'm surprised at the number of people who think this doesn't constitute a meal. Of course it does. There is protein, carbohydrate and vegetables.

My family would happily eat that for an evening meal.

Meals don't have to be meat and two veg. Some people need to think outside the box.
