I know I am being really nosey and it's not very British to talk money. I was inspired by another thread where people are asking questions to all sorts of careers.

I was just wondering if people could take part and say what they do, how much they earn and where they are. Also, could you also provide advice on how to enter the profession and whether you recommend it. Thought this might be more u self than just go ogling as I get real life opinions and have found the other thread really insightful

Please let's not make anyone feel bad for what they are. I'll start

Retail assistant, 3 year, Leeds, £6.50ph. Whilst I actually enjoy it, I'm looking to leave. No advice needed - just hand in tour CVs Smile

Details: Research fellow. Russell Group university in the North West. £44k.
Entry requirements: PhD in appropriate subject. Successful application for funding.
Recommend: Not for the fainthearted. You need to want to do it. It's quite vocational.

GoodToesBadToes · 21/07/2015 12:56

Marketing, Central London, have been doing it 10 years. £80k

TheHouseOnBellSt · 21/07/2015 12:57

Freelance copywriter...I don't have a salary but I earn between £15.00 and £30.00 per hour depending on what I'm doing. I'm in the NW and I wouldn't recommend anyone tries to enter the profession without some serious time and cash back up on their hands.

Job: University lecturer- Russell Group University

Where: North East

Salary: £40K

Entry Requirements: BA, MA, PhD, Research assistant/fellow experience, Teaching in HE experience

Recommend: Yes, I love it. I have lots of autonomy and enhoy the content of my work but permenant academic jobs are hard very to get and there's a risk you'll be stuck on short-term contracts for a long, long time. Also, most people who work in academia are complete knobheads.

Experience: Two years in my current job and two years of research fellowship before it.

CEO charity £45k, 15 years. Work way up in different charities and public sector.

It's amazing and exhausting it is definitely a vocation particularly if you are in an area to do with vulnerable people.

StarsInTheNightSky · 21/07/2015 13:02

My previous career was more interesting, but was very ususual so might out me if I gave specifics rather than vague details, so I'll give you my current one. I don't really want to talk about the proft we make but it is very lucrative.

Ranch owner (and overall manager) in the depths of remote South America. We bought the ranch, kept the hands and their families on, and started running it. Unless you have experience, no, I wouldn't recommend it and it can be a hard life, extremely different to living in the UK. We're five hours drive from the nearest town, which is more of a tiny village really. We love it though, it suits us down to the ground.

I do recommend it - when it's good, it's great - but the present government have made it a less pleasant job and I definitely earn my holidays!

I'm a property manager on £30k, done it for just under 5 years. Wouldn't recommend it unless you fancy getting abuse on a daily basis & have more work than time to do it in.

DH is in (specialised) IT, has a degree & had done it for about 10 years ever since uni. He loves his job and gets £110k pa plus huge benefits package worth a fair bit too... I secretly hate/envy him for having a well paid job that he actually enjoys.
