I know I am being really nosey and it's not very British to talk money. I was inspired by another thread where people are asking questions to all sorts of careers.

I was just wondering if people could take part and say what they do, how much they earn and where they are. Also, could you also provide advice on how to enter the profession and whether you recommend it. Thought this might be more u self than just go ogling as I get real life opinions and have found the other thread really insightful

Please let's not make anyone feel bad for what they are. I'll start

Retail assistant, 3 year, Leeds, £6.50ph. Whilst I actually enjoy it, I'm looking to leave. No advice needed - just hand in tour CVs Smile

25 years experience

DidoTheDodo · 21/07/2015 14:53

I was 26 years in the charity sector, Director level, with the highest qualification offered by the regulatory body in my speciality.

I was made redundant in May and now get £73.10 a week JSA. But only until November at the latest, then nothing.

maybebabybee · 21/07/2015 14:54

starkers what industry do you work in because that makes a massive difference IME?

5446 · 21/07/2015 14:55

Currently taking time out to relocate and study, but most recent job:

Recruitment Consultant
Approx 32k basic with around 10k commission
Singapore
2 years experience.

fairgroundsnack · 21/07/2015 14:56

another corporate lawyer here...
City based
£108,000 plus bonus (usually no more than about £10k) for 4 day week
11 years experience including 2 years training on the job
Cambridge degree followed by 2 years at law school
It's pretty good - when we are busy we are really busy but we have quieter times too - and I can't imagine anything else would pay me as well for 4 days!

rightsaid · 21/07/2015 14:56

Finance Director (professional services SME), London, £95k

12 years working, 6 years post qual (CIMA), I have a degree (it really helped, but it isn't a pre-requisite) and I qualified in my own time whilst working in my industry (took 4.5 years).

I've never worked in an accounting practice.

This seems to be an area you're interested in? My exact path was to have temp jobs in finance departments of big firms for 2 years after uni and then progress from there. The studying was a hard slog, sponsorship and time off is not standard in my industry. If you can get an entry level finance job (£20-£22k in London) there are actually lots of options open to someone bright and willing (accountancy is just one: also systems, general management, logistics, project management, procurement all often draw from people with a finance background). Although temp entry jobs aren't as common as they used to be and there is a higher appetite for grads - there are still decent finance jobs and opportunities in non-finance firms (like retailers, professional service, charities etc etc nearly every sort of organisation needs to pay the bills!)

Casual dress code, flexible hours, home working, generous maternity package. I love my job. I still wish I worked on a South American ranch though Envy

CalleighDoodle · 21/07/2015 14:56

Currently Finance Director, working ft in a leisure/ hospitality company. 23 yrs pqe.

Previously in big 4 audit then management consultancy, followed by full on FD role in private equity business. 20 years of slog and climbing the greasy pole. Huge pressure but great rewards.

Have cut and run somewhat this year, changed job and working more normal hours and little pressure. Have time to do non exec role too which is setting me up nicely for semi retirement when dc have finished uni. Currently earn £120k plus potential 50% bonus.

Accountancy has been a very good choice for me.

Programme manager in tech/engineering field in South east 85k plus bonus normally 18k per year. 10 years experience. requirements are common sense and a technical aptitude.

TriJo · 21/07/2015 15:03

Software developer
London
3 years experience as a dev + 2 years of software QA
On 36k, badly in need of a raise. Should jump to 50k with next move.

Kitella · 21/07/2015 15:05

6th form teacher / lecturer.

Quals: undergrad degree + PGCE + MA

Location: SW England

Salary: 37k plus I get an extra 2k or so from exam marking.

Would I recommend it? I love it, it allows me to work with students, which I love and to still teach my subject. But it is very hard work. My sector bears the brunt of most of the cuts, and because of all the govt changes at the moment it is unrelenting. But ultimately I do wake up on a Monday morning and enjoy going to work. That's good enough for me.

QforCucumber · 21/07/2015 15:07

used to be a hotel restaurant manager - fell into that working my way up from being a waitress while at college,

left it 2 years ago when I was offered an admin role at a better hourly rate and is 8-4 Monday to Friday, no real qualifications required but am doing a foundation degree in business management alongside working just for my own progression.

18k a year, North East, Construction Industry.

Kitella · 21/07/2015 15:07

Forgot to say - 18 years experience and top of payscale. Looking at maybe going for a head of sixth form job in the next few years. That's a leadership role, so should be an extra 4-5k.

YeOldTrout · 21/07/2015 15:08

Terry Leahy (?sp?) the guy who ran Tesco for long time, was one of their regular floor workers for a long spell before he got his degrees & came back into management. He said that he still liked to roll up his sleeves and work on the shop floor one or 2 days a year, sweeping up the rubbish and so on.

tbh, I would be embarrassed to post on here if I earnt lots more than the median salary, given OP said she was on £6.50/hr.

I'm a research scientist, 14 yrs experience but only 2 yrs very relevant. I have a PhD and recommend it if you don't mind an average salary, and do like puzzles, data analysis, working independently and data mining.

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/07/2015 15:09

Policy and Strategy Manager.
Smallish Housing Association in London.

£42,000.
8 years experience - have worked in housing and welfare related policy in the social rented sector and third sector for essentially my entire post-uni career, as I'm 29.

I began as an Admin Assistant with a small social research organisation when I graduated after my History degree when I was 22. I got promoted to a Research Assistant after a year or so - working for a small organisation I'd never really been "just" an administrator and had gotten experience in other departments by necessity of having to cover for colleagues on leave / sick. After that I worked on a Welfare Rights project with a large mental health charity for two years, as a Policy Officer with another Housing Association for a year, then this job.

I'd recommend it if you're good at keeping an open mind and being able to argue your/your organisation's viewpoint even when up against opposing points of view, some of which you may actually agree with or understand why others do. If you're very single-minded and only willing to stick to one particular narrative, this isn't the job for you! It also requires a good grasp of data analysis and figures, and the ability to work with people who you may dislike.

TheBeekeepersDaughter · 21/07/2015 15:11

Educational psychologist for a Local Authority and in private practice.
LA salary £48k fte, but I only do two days, plus a day a week of private work, which pays more.

Based in East Anglia, but I much preferred working in inner London (I moved when I had children).

10 years post qualification experience.

Prior to that, I did a psychology degree, teacher training and 2 years teaching and have a masters degree and doctoral qualification in my field.

It's very competitive to get into, but I am so pleased I did. There is a shortage of EPs so lots of flexibility around where and how much to work. The Local Authority work is hard, but very rewarding and intellectually fulfilling.

Tangfasticlady · 21/07/2015 15:12

I'm a waitress in Hertfordshire. 45+ hours a week approx £20,000 per annum. Hard work, but my shifts always go really quickly which makes it more bearable.

OnIlkelyMoorBahtat · 21/07/2015 15:12

Publishing (Editorial - much the least paid part)
London
£37k
Degree
Requirements: attention to detail, ability to manage varying stakeholders with varying (and sometimes conflicting) wishes and drivers, ability to to eleventy million things at once
10 years experience
Although publishing doesn't pay as much as people tend to think it does, flexible working is pretty embedded in the industry which is great - I work at home 2 days a week.

Discogeek · 21/07/2015 15:14

Charity worker with vulnerable women, no degree but lots of experience and training on the job.
Been in charity sector for 15 years, worked various levels from admin to senior manager but since 2010 funding cuts have meant I've changed jobs almost as many times as I've changed knickers Hmm
West Yorkshire
Approx £9k but work 22hrs a week term time only.
Love my job but it's a vocation, people don't go into this work for the money!
