Why do some peoples bell buttons go "in" and others go "out"?

I myself am an "outie".

Why?

DD used to claim she could see through mine to the baby swimming in my belly! I did ask her how the liquid was not all leaking out into her eye!

she used to put her mouth right against it and say hell-oooo bayyy-beeeee, really cute!

waffly Grin

I myself have a 'halfie'. It was an innie that became an massive painful out tie when pregnant, then settled at half mast

And I am in awe of the crayons-depth innie CherryBonBon describes

ToriaPumpkin · 19/07/2015 15:05

Mine is a very deep innie, DH has a slightly raised outtie, DS has a similar slightly raised outtie and DD had an innie but developed an umbilical hernia (not Prem, just one of those things) and now it's almost flat but changes depending on how full she is so it'll be interesting to see how it ends up when she grows out of her toddler tummy!

Fluffyears · 19/07/2015 15:47

I have a very deep innie, have never seen the bottom of it but it sometimes gets infected as water gets trapped when I bathe or shower so I use a cotton bud dipped in tea tree oil to clean it a few times a week. I literally is just a small closed slit whereas dp has an innie but not very deep so you can see the bottom of his.

MehsMum · 19/07/2015 15:53

I have a standard innie (though it did strain a bit when I pg).

My DM's was like a mini envelope flap: incredibly neat and tidy. No idea how it happened, possibly some 1920s midwife did things differently from everyone else.

HemanOrSheRa · 19/07/2015 15:56

That's what I was always told too waffly. Don't fiddle with your bellybutton or your bum will drop off. And absolutely never, ever unscrew it Grin.

Asheth · 19/07/2015 16:05

Mine is an innie. When I was pregnant it totally closed up! I was expecting it to get wider as my belly got bigger!

Pipbin · 19/07/2015 16:09

I have an innie that looks like a cats bum.

FlyingGoose · 19/07/2015 16:14

One of my twins has an innie and the other an outie!

ShadowFire · 19/07/2015 16:15

DS1 had an umbilical hernia when he was a baby, and his tummy button was an outie until very recently. Now it's an innie - I'm guessing it was an outer because the umbilical hernia was still there a bit.

OrangeSquashTallGlass · 19/07/2015 16:16

Penelope your button fell off?! Shock

I used to have a lovely little innie button. But then I had surgery and now it looks a bit like a capital I, the kind young children draw, with a squigly scar. It's still an innie, but I feel all nostalgic for my old button...

sugartees · 19/07/2015 16:16

Mine is a cavernous innie - I could finally see the bottom of it when pregnant with DC1. Afterwards it got even deeper...

2nd pregnancy the bottom of it surfaced again...plus a few years accumulated fluff that had been previously unreachable Grin

Hamiltoes · 19/07/2015 16:22

Mines is an innie with a huge mole inside it BlushSad

Its quite hideous, even more so when pregnant and it became an outie with an even bigger outie on top of it. Heard its not as uncommon as I once thought though? [hopeful]

CrohnicallyAspie · 19/07/2015 16:22

Mine is an innie but it did pop when I was pregnant and became an outie.

DD has an innie even though DH 'cut' the cord (due to CS he couldn't enter the sterile area, the cord was cut long but DH trimmed it to the correct length once DD was brought over to be weighed) and she had a granuloma in it (once the stump fell off fresh skin kept forming over the top to make a big lump, it had to be cauterised).

HookedOnHooking · 19/07/2015 16:25

It has bugger all to do with the way the umbilical cord is cut. Really.

BlinkAndMiss · 19/07/2015 16:30

I have an innie, it used to be nice and small but then I got preganant with DS1 and it stretched. During my pregnancy it was flat and it went a bit discoloured. It was never the same afterwards, it was a lot bigger. Then I got pregnant with DS2 and it's now massive and even darker, I'm hoping it'll shrink back to at least the size it was after DS1 but at the moment it's baggy and disgusting :(.
