As a Pakistani (with no inbreeding as far as i know) with a disabled child this racism sickens me.

The daily mail have used a brown south asian lady to be racist to her own people.

A google search shows Daily Mail have an obsession with this topic.

Their are a few more articles all saying the same thing.

Im used to the Daily Mail smearing/hating muslims (particularly Pakistani muslims) but to mention genetics feels a bit Hitlerish.

Also i think its very interesting that the writer is an Indian insulting Pakistani's.

Why is this article published at a time of tension between muslim and non muslim communities and attacks against non muslims around the world are still raw in our memory.

Its racist because it is saying that intermarriage is widespread in pakistani communities, which in my opinion it is not.

Several times the article states that it goes in on in some communities - that's very different to saying all people from Pakistan are inbred. It's also true in some cases, that there are issues with outdated practices within some families in the UK.

Are you saying that cousin marriage isn't common within the Pakistani Muslim culture?

Are you denying that breeding within a reduced gene pool (caused by repeated consanguineous marriage) increases the rate of genetic disorders?

Or do you accept those, but object to the tone of the article?

Sorry if the story has upset you but not sure what you want to highlight here. I've read the link and although I loathe the slant that the DM takes on stories and find it a sexist little Englander paper, is there anything inaccurate about the story?

I thought it was a fact that the Pakistani community does have a much higher incidence of genetic diseases which is attributable to a high level of cousins marrying. This is not to say that this is the cause in every case but is statistically significant.

Won't read the daily mail but the Born in Bradford study found that 63% of the Pakistani mothers in the study were married to blood relatives. I think that could be considered pretty widespread

I have briefly read the article, I don't like the Daily Mail and I can see why it is sensitive topic but it is important to discuss cousin marriage. I think with what we know now of the science it should be banned but that can't happen with extended discussion so people can understand the facts.

It's not racist at all. It's something the Baroness feels there needs to be discussion on.

No, the article is not racist. It highlights a problem withing a particular community, nothing else.

It shouldn't be taboo. People need to be discouraged from having children with their relatives as it's genetically unhealthy, particularly when repeated down the generations.

If it was never mentioned for fear of upsetting people or being seen as racist, couldn't you argue that the people within this community were being served poorly by public health policy because of their race/religion?

I don't think I've ever seen 'Patel' spelled with a double L before.

I used to work with quite a few GP's of Pakistani heritage and they TOLD me that it was a huge issue. I also personally know a lady from Pakistan who's parents were cousins and who married her own cousin. Her 3 children are disabled and the lady herself told me she believed it was a result of too much intermarrying within families.
So in this case I actually do believe the mail.

One of my good friend's parents are from Pakistan. They are first cousins. 2 of their 3 offspring (including my friend) are disabled. Their condition is considerably more likely because their parents are cousins. How exactly is the article highlighting these figures racist?

I haven't read article but I was on consultant care for my kids. I used.to have to wait three hours every week in waiting room. Every time the majority of ladies in there were Asian. When I asked midwife why, she said they had higher no of congenital (is that the right word?!) / genetic issues on pregnancy.
