Grrr In the market for a car as my current one nearing end of it's lifespan and visited car dealership tonight to have look around. Saw car I liked but unfortunately had to deal with biggest arsehole of a salesman. During space of 20 mins he disparaged my profession saying everybody he knew who did this particular role were "all the same" with a sneer, kept talking to my husband even when I made it clear it would be my car then when I wasn't convinced about getting the best financial offer,he said "c'mon, it's only a few pounds more, try giving up one of your bottles of wine a week!" ...I don't even drink much ....ended up walking away but annoyed because I now need to continue looking around bloody more car garages.

Was it a main dealer by any chance?

What a knob, YANBU. In fact I would phone and make a complaint about him.

I would email a complaint too. That's not nice behaviour at all! YANBU.

I would complain. I find exactly the same when I look for cars. Don't know what it is but I generally find car salesmen act like this.

It pisses me off. When they talk to dh he just keeps saying 'we told you we are buying a car for dw, why are you talking to me?'

YANBU. I bloody hate the car buying experience. I would email a complaint about him. If it's a BMW main dealer then I can give you the email address of their CEO and chairman. I got a very quick response from them. I'd also say you're considering walking away from a car you would otherwise have bought - you might be offered a deal!

We had the same when I was looking for a car. The Nissan salesman was so awful that he hit a new low when he saw me looking at a car with a parking camera. He told me that even though women can't park once he showed me how to use the camera I would be fine. My dh was struck dumb with horror

Huh I've never found this at all. I usually find that the salesperson automatically gravitates to me rather than my dh.
Even when my dh is happy to throw money at them for his dream car they still check it's ok with me first haha.

I have only had this once, I got up and walked away and went elsewhere.

I think it helps if you pretend to know what you are talking about and come across confident knowing exactly what you are after.

It was Arnold Clark dealer. Thing is, I was knowledgeable about the car, seemed to annoy him more, he even started shrugging when I spoke with him at one point. Could also hear managers in background giving a young car salesman grief about his girlfriend, seemed to be a very chauvinist workplace in general. Hate this company as dealt with them (different branch) in the past, but they're only people who have particular car I'm after, typical.

The irony of a car salesman disparaging a profession... Epic self awareness fail there.

What a twat. Has something similar once when my ex and I took the car in for a minor mechanical problem. It was like that fast show sketch where they won't talk to the woman. He wouldn't make eye contact with me. Eventually, ex said "I don't know anything about cars, she does... why aren't you talking to my girlfriend?"

Ironically we are looking at cars this weekend and it's dh who wants the parking camera :)

Go back with a list of incredibly technical questions, and when he can't answer them, look pityingly, sayyou need to speak to someone who knows more about cars and go find his boss ;)

I think you should have confronted him on the spot! Asked him dos your knowledge intimidate him? Asked him to qualify his blanket judgement of your profession! Mostly I'd have asked did his chauvinistic attitude usually get him sales! PRICK! In fairness my husband would have pulled him.

It’s Arnold Clark, they are a huge company. Send an e-mail to the ceo. Demand a response and put everything on Facebook. Put a link this on their FB page and wait for the grovelling apology.

Many years ago I had to do some work in the workshop of a garage and a salesman got interested and chatted. He told me what idiots all his customers were and how he could manipulate them. He said some frankly disgusting things about his female customers and ever since then I have never bought a car from a salesman.

Someone I know went with her husband to look for a family car and her husband was told that it was a lovely big boot, big enough to shag her in...in front of her Needless to say they didn't get a sale. Quite why they thought they would I'll never understand.

There are assholes in every profession.. Unfortunately you came across one.. Take your business elsewhere.. Or go back to look at the car again & go to another salesperson. Also second the idea of filing a complaint against that salesperson.

My DH is a car salesman & a lovely man so they're not all the same :)

Don't expect Arnold Clarke to listen to a complaint! I know someone who's brand new car set on fire and they didn't listen to the complaints from that and the way it was handled!

I got my current car from Arnold Clark. No issues during the purchase but shocking aftercare. 2 year old car broke down due to corroded spark plugs a week after their "all singing all dancing service package" which had a tick box saying they'd checked said spark plugs. Liars!

Complained to Manager- not interested. Filled out automated email "how did we do?" survey and a survey Vauxhall sent asking me to rate their approved supplier. No follow up on any of them. My pre paid service package has ended and they still send me notices saying they've booked me in for an annual service on x date. They did it when the car was due it's first mot too. I didn't cancel any of them. Like to think I'm wasting their time and money in service slots and postage

Wow, seems like quite a common occurrence....managed to get the car I wanted this afternoon from a different branch of Arnold Clark and salesguy couldn't have been more helpful. Told him about my experience at the other branch and strangely enough, he introduced me to the couple next to me who had also walked out the other branch the previous evening, so seems its not just me then! Smiling away to myself here as the ignorant sod now keeps phoning me and asking me to phone him back....strange, as he said his deal would expire at 10 today unless I phoned him back

I hate the way they treat women, I took my old banger in when I was early 20's as they were guaranteeing £1000 on any car traded in, I got offered £300 repeatedly. Sent my dad in with the car an hour later and he got offered £1000, the look on the guy's face when I walked into sign the paperwork was priceless!

My mum hates car shopping/test driving and all that so when I was in my early 20s my dad took me with him to do test drives/get a second opinion. The man in the Mercedes garage sneered when my lovely dad said 'can you photocopy her driving licence as well as she'll be testing it too' and he refused (even though I was over 21 and had had a full clean driving licence for 4 years) because he said 'there's no way you'll let your daughter drive THIS car'. My dad walked out of the garage there and then and has refused to ever go back!

My friend used to work for them, they won't care about a complaint. Take your money somewhere else, they are an awful company.

A car salesman once told me to thank my husband for buying me a car. It was my money, I chose the car myself, my husband came with me to pick it up. Fuckwit.

Would have put good money on it being Arnold Clark - will never buy another car from them, they are shite
