"Strong genes"

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 17/07/2015 21:09

Is this an actual thing? I'm watching married at first sight and one of the experts just said "His face is very symmetrical which is an indicator of very strong genes"

What are weak genes?

Are they talking about dominant and recessive genes or is this some kind of nonsense talking for the sake of talking?

I've heard it's an indicator of health, but also find the term strong genes a bit odd. Then again I'm no geneticist so can't offer too much insight I'm afraid!

bigbumtheory · 17/07/2015 21:24

I think the more symmetrical then more attractive we find a person, but exactly symmetrical is off putting.

GraysAnalogy · 17/07/2015 21:28

I don't think genes can be strong or weak, just dominant and recessive. I'm not sure what this expert was talking about.

On another note, I have a perfect symmetrical face except a mole. I only discovered this when messing about with the camera on my macbook and it's weird effects

TRexingInAsda · 17/07/2015 21:40

Maybe he means good genes, as in he's handsome, so a woman might see that as a positive if they're thinking of having kids with him.

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/07/2015 21:43

Bruce Willis has strong genes.

GraysAnalogy · 17/07/2015 21:43

Bruce Willis has strong everything in my book.

Sorry, I just love a bit of Bruce.

BestZebbie · 17/07/2015 21:44

Maybe he is talking about genes that dont carry many mutations that might make the person less fit (and thereby 'weaker?')? Although that would still be spouting a complete load of rubbish.

MissBeans · 17/07/2015 21:47

At a guess an 'ugly' appearance is suggests weak genes.

MissBeans · 17/07/2015 21:47

Excuse the 'is' in that sentence!

MissMuffetisin · 17/07/2015 21:50

The fewer mutations you have the more symmetrical you are .

TTWK · 17/07/2015 21:51

On another note, I have a perfect symmetrical face

Me too, well apart from the 6" scar down one cheek, the missing tooth, the wonky eye, the broken nose and the fact that someone bit my ear off in a nightclub fight.

I saw this and I knew before that symmetry was related to attractiveness. I think they mean 'healthy' when they say 'strong genes'. That would make sense. That you are attracted to people who are attractive and they are attractive because they have symmetrical faces. And symmetry is correlated to health

MarchLikeAnAnt · 17/07/2015 21:56

The fewer mutations you have the more symmetrical you are

So I'm a mutant then? ShockGrin

LucilleBluth · 17/07/2015 22:06

I always say that I have strong genes because two out of three of ours DCs look like me :)

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 17/07/2015 22:23

TTWK are you Mad Eye Moody?

I'm now wondering if my face is symmetrical.

I remember a programme that said that people of mixed race were often stronger, more intelligent than people whose ancestors came from a smaller area.

TTWK · 17/07/2015 22:38

Probably due to being in a gene pool and not a gene puddle.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 17/07/2015 22:41

That was one of the many remarks that alerted me to the fact that that shows claim to being scientific were er not very strong at all.

Epilepsyhelp · 17/07/2015 22:44

Maybe it means the DNA did really well telling the cells where to build to make the pattern exactly right on both sides?!

On another note which episode was that OP?!

grumpysquash · 17/07/2015 22:45

'Strong genes' isn't a scientific term, that's for sure.
But it's true to say that a lot of chromosomal abnormalities result in facial features that are not regular, e.g. forehead too big, jaw out of proportion, or low set ears. So I guess what people mean is that there is an absence of things that would indicate a genetic problem.....??????????????

JohnFarleysRuskin · 17/07/2015 22:46

1st maybe?

ReallyTired · 17/07/2015 22:56

There are people with quite severe special needs who are good looking. Many disablities are invisible.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 17/07/2015 23:00

Yes it was the first episode.

My ds has a genetic condition and is bloody gorgeous (I know, I know, i am his mum - but honestly he really is!!)

There are theories that people with autism have more symmetrical faces, and IMO, ASDs will eventually be found to have a genetic cause.
