To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

Is it like a secret crown that you get the code when are made Mumsnet Royalty?

Or is it more like a magic crown. So we all try Crown to see if we are one of the chosen ones?

mellicauli · 17/07/2015 17:26

ooh it worked.

There's always been nasty bitches on MN. Fortunately they're in the minority but they do drag some threads down. They also, unfortunately, drive away some lovely, interesting, creative and funny posters who just get turned off MN after being personally attacked by one of these unpleasant, humourless harridans

They remind me of a pack of dogs.
A thread will be humming along nicely, with people happily agreeing and disagreeing, but usually, by the time the thread gets to about page 10, you can more or less guarantee that one of these particular posters will appear on the thread, make a really nasty, unnecessary comment and before you know it - the other (similar 'characters') pick up the scent and will all pile on to that one thread and completely destroy it and rip it to bits.
Then the thread gets deleted.
Job done.
Then they move on somewhere else for some more 'fun'.

It could be coincidental.
But sometimes I wonder if it's intentional and they purposely go 'hunting' for threads to destroy - but that's being paranoid right? or is it Hmm

The worst thing is, the admins seem to allow them to get away with it. Or maybe they don't notice.

LovelyFriend · 17/07/2015 17:32

didn't we have that over PC and ProfOff?

Or do we need to throw buns?

Fuck me its hometime - ta ra!

The only time it's acceptable to correct someone's spelling is when they've made a typo in an arsey comment about another user's spelling and grammar.

Or if they've posted some text that is going to form part of a website / mailshot / other professional communication and have asked for feedback on it.

I'm one of nature's pedants but that's my problem, no one else's. Writing is a skill, none of us were born able to do it. We don't judge a poster based on how well/quickly they can or can't complete a line of mathematical equations or change a tyre on a car, so why is their prowess at constructing sentences on an informal forum somehow indicative of their intelligence and general character?

Very occasionally there'll be a post I find hard to read, usually because it's a block of unbroken text, and I'll just quietly close it again. I don't feel the need to post "paragraphs!" as I've seen some do while I've been lurking.

MaggieJoyBlunt · 17/07/2015 17:35

Or do we need to throw buns?

You know, an actual bun emoticon might help.

Everyone could lob a few, get it out of their system, job done.
