To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

It's dumbed down. I joined in 2011 and in the last 2 years it's turned into a shit hole. I don't even post anymore. No one listens. I blame it on penis fucking shitting beaker.

Ubik1 · 19/07/2015 18:13

Yes -I think mumsnet comes through brilliantly for people sometimes.

But it depends on your beef

shaska · 19/07/2015 18:20

What there's mumsnet beef now? Thought it was just ham.

Hot salted on a bagel pls

Interesting to read the last few pages about MN royalty. I've been here ten long years and have only namechanged to post something sensitive. I've never felt royal Grin and always feel quite low profile which I like.

MN has changed enormously since when I first joined in 2005, there are certain familiar names but quite a few from the old days just aren't around any more, or they are and they have a different name. Personally I think namechanging takes away some sort of continuity and I would prefer that it was only for privacy or emergencies but that's just my opinion.

The big difference is the traffic. The site was much smaller and not so many posts in a day back then and you just recognised more posters. I have no idea who anyone is any more but I'm glad because that means no one knows me either Grin

answersonapostcardplease · 19/07/2015 18:26

Oh those were the good old days not Its always been like this.

Roussette · 19/07/2015 18:35

I'm not talking about the good old days, it's no better,no worse, it's just more busy.

Yarp · 19/07/2015 18:50

BigRed

I missed pies beaker. Missed it completely. And I'm on quite a lot (under different names in the past). So it's weird when it gets mentioned. Like having amnesia or something

Yarp · 19/07/2015 18:50

penis beaker

Lots of thread policing under guise of protecting others from a. Opinion, and picking up on minor details of an op's life and interrogating them.

Yes to this! I've seen threads where loads of people were piling on to one person saying that their opinion may offend someone who was posting on the thread even though that person wasn't objecting at all.

I thought MN royalty was just shorthand for posters who have recognisable usernames and post a lot and are popular. I do think certain posters get away with saying things that others wouldn't though which I think is unfair. They can often set the tone of a thread and if they are rude then others are quick to follow suit.

OnAPedalStool · 19/07/2015 19:10

And yes, there is a lot of thread policing and not in a good way.

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 19:22

It's mostly regulars who jump in to stop the pile ins.

HelenaDove · 19/07/2015 19:27

Agree usual. AF has called out bullying loads of times.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 19/07/2015 19:28

Exactly..thread policing or telling people to stop being bastards?

happybubblebrain · 19/07/2015 19:31

I've been on MN for 10 years. It's always been quite nasty. It did used to be funnier than it is now.

Baddz · 19/07/2015 19:36

Been a member since 2006.
Couple of name changes cos I get bored :)
There are areas of mn I don't go on anymore...I remember riven being hounded off sn. Awful.
And I'm not sure about mn royalty as such but there are posters who get their flying monkeys to come on and back them up if they are losing an argument on a thread.
What happened to Laqueen was pretty shocking.
A friend of mine was hounded off sn - to the point that even if she posted on another thread they would all jump onto that thread too and attack her.
I wouldnt have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
It's all very well saying its "just words on a page" and "just a forum" but some people use mn because it's all the support network they have.
I also lurk much more and don't post as much as I used to.
Sad, but there you go.
I like Twitter :)

OnAPedalStool · 19/07/2015 19:37

Well I recognised plenty of names in this particular pile on. AF wasn't among them though.

Baddz · 19/07/2015 19:39

...and it seems now that if you tell someone something they don't like you are "bullying" them.
No.
You just don't agree.
Adults should be able to agree to disagree and move on.
I have had such great support from the bereavement support threads, and knowledgable help from other mners.
So many clever, funny and amazing people on here.
Shame about the twats.
:)

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 19:44

I think we all know that with so many behind the scenes FB groups that it's obvious that posters will get their mates to back them up.

You would be pretty naive if you didn't think that ever happened,

Baddz · 19/07/2015 19:46

Ah.
FB.
I actually hadn't thought of that (Im Not on FB)
Yes, that makes sense.

ilovesooty · 19/07/2015 19:47

I suppose you're right usual

PS I've never been invited to join one though.

TiggyD · 19/07/2015 19:51

EthelDurant123 · 19/07/2015 19:52

Every forum has its idiots. I just Hmm to them.
I am a new member. There are some bit he's here, but a lot more great people, who have certainly helped me out when I have asked something.
I think generally, all over the Internet, people who are having problems in their own life try and turn that around and use that to attack strangers for their views. It's so easy to do, behind the curtain of relative anonymity. I get it on Twitter and Facebook too. I can ignore it because I usually know I'm right because they don't know me.

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 19:55

Oh dear Tiggy. I should have said the post penis beaker male posters.

So ta for the biscuit.

TiggyD · 19/07/2015 19:56

You're welcome. Just make sure you nibble the biscuit part off first and down the jammy centre in one go. That's the way they're supposed to be eaten.

UncertainSmile · 19/07/2015 19:59

I mostly ignore the male posters.

I'm a bit offended by that
