To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

"No, it's not just long-standing posters. It is - or was - about a group of members who were like the 'alpha girls' at school, collectively choosing who to be friends with and collectively picking on people they'd decided not to like. You know how those girls used to try and get everyone else to take sides in the playground? That. If you made the mistake of criticising one of the 'chosen', half the site would be on you like a ton of bricks."

The people I think of when I think of the mainstays of Mn (or royalty as some call them) aren't like that though. They might be popular and very recognisable but generally not nasty with it. There are a few long term posters who just are popular and have gained many posters respect. As was discussed earlier, they can't control other posters who seem to want to get their attention or hang on their coat tails. I just find it cringey. Nasty, goady posters might be recognisable and well known but they won't necessarily be popular.

Bambambini · 19/07/2015 16:50

And I wasn't being snide or veiled about "royalty" at all but openly critical of how some posters react to them.

Garlick · 19/07/2015 16:52

Pagwatch Princess Margaret allegedly took cocaine with the Rolling Stones at an Earl's Court concert.

To think MN is getting nastier?
Mintyy · 19/07/2015 16:53

Ok, still pretty amazed that a new poster can have identified the "in girls" after a couple of visits but fair play to you.

BigPapaChunk · 19/07/2015 17:06

Oh, you just took the best one. I'll be Jeremy Clarkson...

ItWillWash · 19/07/2015 17:14

I've been reading for longer than I've been posting Mintyy and I keep lists [adds Mintyy to list] Wink

To be honest I was looking for them after reading what my friends had to say on FB, which is probably the only reason I noticed it, I'm not sure if they're royalty or in girls but if they post on the first few pages of a thread, the whole tone of the thread can change in agreement with them.

Maybe the tone would've changed anyway, maybe it wouldn't [shrugs]

I don't think MN is any worse than a lot of other chat places out there, but for a parenting site, supposedly for grown ups, it surprised me how venomous it can be at times, that's all. I've some equally supportive threads too.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 19/07/2015 17:18

There are arseholes everywhere, not just on mn. There's a lack of humour sometimes though which annoys me much more than the odd bitchy post.

Pagwatch · 19/07/2015 17:19

Blimey Garlick I am so being Princess Margaret.
It really suits me.

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 17:23

You have to be very careful now if you try to be funny in case someone tells you off.

CruCru · 19/07/2015 17:35

There are some areas of MN that never seem to be bitchy - I like Exercise and Gardening.

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 17:36

Camping is a lovely safe topic.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 19/07/2015 17:37

usual Yes well no one posts on a chat forum for fun do they Wink One hundred reasons to phone 101 is clearly what we're all for.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 19/07/2015 17:38

What we're all HERE for. Grin

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 17:44

I delete more replies then I post these days.

I think 'that one will get me lynched' Grin

Ubik1 · 19/07/2015 17:49

It's not as funny as it used to be.

People don't expect to be treated like adults anymore. There's a lot of 'running to teacher' in order to gain some oneupmumship on a thread.

Lots of thread policing under guise of protecting others from a. Opinion, and picking up on minor details of an op's life and interrogating them.
People expect a narrative arc these days and if op doesn't provide satisfaction, they get cross.

I dislike all the self righteous worthiness.
But it's only a chat forum so none of it really matters.

Kayden · 19/07/2015 17:52

I don't care if you're been on MN for 8 years or 8 hours. I do care when people who have kept the same names for years, thus are well known on here, barge into threads simply to berate people because "this has been done to death". Or my personal bug bear, to act as the thread police and then make sweeping statements about how MN used to be better and how it's a bunch of wank. Yet, they continue posting and complaining. Confused

FWIW, I've been here for nearly 7 years and name change regularly. I do recognise certain names. I do notice when people aren't around and wonder where they've gone to. I hate the 'royalty' bollocks, so have no axe to grind.

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 17:52

MN has always been quite worthy though. The worthiness has always made me laugh.

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 17:56

What if someone who has been here for years but who NCs a lot barges onto a thread being the chief inspector. How would you know?

Kayden · 19/07/2015 17:58

Let me rephrase that, I really cannot tolerate any thread policing nonsense, unless there is obvious rule breaking, racism, disablism and sexism etc.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 19/07/2015 17:58

Its ok, Minions and smokers are this weeks Awfully Horrid Things. Jokers newbies are safe....for now.

Ubik1 · 19/07/2015 17:59

It really doesn't matter. It's just a forum.

I think mumsnet a fine. Apart from the fact that I miss the funny people. And some sections are surprisingly batshit crazy.

The Peter Andre threads are still good value. Smile

Kayden · 19/07/2015 18:02

Smoking minions must really upset some people. Shock

usualsuspect333 · 19/07/2015 18:02

It doesn't matter, no.

Interesting to read other peoples take on MN though.

MitzyLeFrouf · 19/07/2015 18:02

Peter Andre piss taking is always a ray of sunshine.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 19/07/2015 18:06

I don't take it too seriously either ubik But don't like it when someone clearly struggling asks for help and gets met with snidey responses, that annoys me and I try and jump in when I see it. Other than that, game on Smile
