To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

I've only been skiing once when I was 17. There was a blizzard and the mountain was closed. We were caught up in the middle of a car accident leaving the car park. there were injuries, ambulances etc. then suddenly everyone was gone and we were stuck on the mountain. Alone. Clueless. In a blizzard.

Luckily we were in an old Skoda which had no heating so we had duvets with us to keep warm in the car. So we gathered up our duvets and trudged through the blizzard until we found a kindly university skiing lodge who took us in for the night and made us their "clean up bitches" in return for shelter. Which apparently is against the "law of the mountain". As I said we were clueless.

It was quite brilliant but never again will I travel in an old Skoda.

Do I have to clarify that neither the accident or any of the injuries was our fault so I don't get shouted at?

Sounds damn sight better fun than going in for a smear test worra.

Then again, you're still lying back and having a cold metal utensil stuck between your legs I suppose Hmm

LovelyFriend · 17/07/2015 22:38

It was also the first time I had ever seen snow.

You're welcome.

Or you could be SitOnMyAceFuck if you like?

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2015 22:46

True, but I've yet to be slammed face first into a brick wall after a smear test.

Mind you, the receptionist is a bit hot headed so I won't rule it out...

SitOnMyFacebook · 17/07/2015 22:51

Those GP's receptionists can be well scary it must be said.

ghostyslovesheep · 17/07/2015 23:00

I love snow - hate skiing

lived on top of the Zugspitze for 8 months - didn't ski once - well I did once - hated it - walked down the slope and got drunk - much more fun

MaggieJoyBlunt · 17/07/2015 23:36

Or you could be SitOnMyAceFuck if you like?

I don't know what that means but don't do it Perp Smile

What did you do when you got to the bottom ghosty?

I'd probably lie down and happily develop hypothermia in those circs. I'm such a lazy drunk.

YouTheCat · 17/07/2015 23:39

I would only ever go skiing for the schnapps.

Bambambini · 17/07/2015 23:54

I'm a frivolous Nchanger but can't remeber my password so haven't Nchanged in a while - I feel quite naked.

Where is LaQueen by the way? Has she deployed elsewhere! Is Bupcakes still here?

RusticBlush · 17/07/2015 23:54

Do you know what I need a rant!! I love MN for the humour, quirkiness and the knowledge of a different perspective but I can't stand the self indulgant individuals who think they are the only ones who've had/ having a hard time and the way they manipulate posts to make their life seem the toughest - I'm doctoring my viewing list to 'sensible or happy' only from now on Wink. (Personal choice!!!!)

Garlick · 18/07/2015 00:51

Good story well told, LF.

SaggyAndLucy · 18/07/2015 00:56

I think that MN is less funny, but not necessarily more nasty. The PO have always been there but the less fun posters and threads there are, the more the more the PO stick out. I used to post loads, but now i just lurk. It's no fun posting any more really.
It's because so many funny posters seem to be missing. I'm sure they've all buggered off to facebook.
Bambam I haven't seen old Queenie about for ages! I miss her purple prose and not so stealth boasting!

HelenaDove · 18/07/2015 02:14

And then there is the weight shaming which has got worse over the last couple of years.

I've been a long time lurker/sometime poster since 2007. I have had amazing support through difficult times but I am loathe to start a thread in Chat or AIBU as I have been ROASTED the few times I have done so. It's usually over something utterly trivial too

PageNotFound404 · 18/07/2015 05:38

I genuinely burst out laughing at this exchange and woke up the cat. So on behalf of my professionally offended cat, can you be less funny in future please?

echt · 18/07/2015 05:50

Agree to fewer larfs, which throws the occasional nastiness into bolder relief. But nastier per se? Nah.

LikeIcan · 18/07/2015 06:21

YABU: It's the same as it ever was, if anything, slightly better as it's far less cliquey.
Not sure if it's less funny ( I haven't got a sense of humour so wouldn't know ) but the support is great & it's still the best online forum around.
One thing I've noticed though, a few people have far too much time on their hands & seem to spend their life on here. If you're like that you'll notice anything & everything - if you dip in and out & keep things in perspective ( it's a non compulsory website talking mainly crap ) then you'll enjoy it more.

Watchatalltimes · 18/07/2015 07:50

I've been a lurker since 2011 but joined in 2013 and I've noticed some nasty threads lately, the one that upset me the most was the Food Bank thread where a poster explained her mh problems and another poster was personally attacking her. However, when I posted a thread in Chat, I had some really kind advice.

OnAPedalStool · 18/07/2015 08:32

There's a disturbing number of posters on here who are overly invested in this site and what happens on it. They obsess and can't let matters drop and hound and stalk and bully.

^^this

OnAPedalStool · 18/07/2015 08:36

Sorry, posted early! Yes, I agree with you OP and the poster who wrote the above. I have used the Report button so much more in the last few months. Although I also agree with the person earlier who said that MNHQ have changed. I think they've made some very strange decisions about deleting posts and threads.

SophiePendragon · 18/07/2015 08:37

There are some posters who appear to have some major stuff going on with the way they relate to other people.

I'm one - I have difficulties socially but they don't normally involve being super nasty to other people, more just a bit of paranoia and maybe getting things wrong, not getting the cues, odd sense of humour etc.

Sometimes people seem intent on harm - maybe they have BPD or similar - I've seen it quite a lot. Very very clever but also far too incisive and not caring that it actually hurts others, because the main thing is to show how clever you are and win the argument whatever it takes.

That can colour an entire thread and make this place seem awful when really it's just one person who isn't quite right, and their followers sometimes as well.
