To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

Oh, and we were all lacking in intellect according to her.

I don't see how calling the Old Bill would help with that.

Eh? What is the point of PMing someone only to post it publicly onto the thread? Surely with PMs the clue is in the name - "Private" Message.

I get what people mean about some posters who seem to have had a sense of humour bypass.

About a month ago there were several of us on a thread having a good old moan/laugh about the quirks of our DHs. Someone came on to try to give us all relationship counselling and seemed to want to suggest we all lived appalling lives and should LTBs. They couldn't seem to understand at all that whilst true, it was tongue in cheek for the most part.

Has someone really quite annoyed you sit?

Its a public forum and you will always get this. Just either take no notice (a couple of your points did make me chuckle though) or say your piece. Stop blaming a site for people that use it.

OP YABVVU.

mrsruffallo · 17/07/2015 20:45

I'm confused. Who are we talking about???

Bambambini · 17/07/2015 20:45

I 'be been here about 9 or 10 years. Don't think it's probably changed, just that the initial newness and buzz has worn off. You've been here to long and starting to see the flaws, get bored at the same old, same old.

I get a bit annoyed at folk making these comments - sounds like a bunch of old coffers sitting nursing a pint and going on about how things aren't what they used to be.

''sounds like a bunch of old coffers sitting nursing a pint and going on about how things aren't what they used to be.''

Are you stalking me?

Not really. It will pass momentarily. Just sad actually to see so little of the robust bonhomie and hilarious verbal sparing which used to be Mumsnet's USP.

The demographic now appears to be mainly middle aged posters who are yet still trapped in Year 8 when it comes to bitchiness and bullying. Or middle aged POsters determined that fun and frivolity must be confined to high days and holidays only. And only then by special application (signed in triplicate).

There's a few frivolity guerrillas left but they have to stay mainly under the radar.

MaggieJoyBlunt · 17/07/2015 20:53

I do look a bit like Les Dawson, unfortunately.

Les who? That's a pic of me Maggie Grin

Bambambini · 17/07/2015 20:54

i want to be in an old coffer gang that looks like Les Dawson in drag, if only I could look as good as Les in drag!

If I want a gentle but quick response I post in Chat.

I've found that chat has become more and more like AIBU - it's almost like people jump in and try and say the most antagonistic thing possible sometimes.

This is possibly though because MN can be amazingly supportive sometimes, but equally sometimes a bit lonely. Most comments on threads go completely unrecognised, unanswered and it's only the contraversial / exceptional posts that get a response. I think people like to post mean things just so they get a personal reply, sadly.

mrsruffallo · 17/07/2015 21:01

What's wrong with being middle aged? Issues much?

Pagwatch · 17/07/2015 21:01

This is often in the eye of the beholder though.
These threads do pop up often and I sometimes think posters are sometimes talking about each other.

It's also always an excuse to just dig away anonymously at some posters - the 'royalty' 'regulars' 'oh there is one poster who always turns up and does x' etc etc - it's all pretty snide isn't it?
Which on a thread complaining about the nasty tone on MN is ironic.

Whenever people slag off 'regulars' 'royalty' etc I always feel a bit like leaving. Maybe there is just a shelf life for being on here?

Hexadecimal1 · 17/07/2015 21:04

pagwatch I posted on another thread that it would be nice if everyone was made to name change every so often to avoid the cliqueness. You can imagine who was in favour of this and not.

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2015 21:04

Maggie and Sylvanian, out on the town Grin

MaggieJoyBlunt · 17/07/2015 21:06

Eh oop Pag it isn't all that bad.

It's more to do with the cultural groupthink of what's acceptable (to me) than specific posters or groups.

It's also always an excuse to just dig away anonymously at some posters

If you mean the purpose of the thread. No, you're quite wrong about that.

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 17/07/2015 21:07

So not name changing = clique?
Really Confused
