It started about a month ago here :( im absolutely terrified and 3 spiders a day was genuinely making me anxious!
I read that they hate lemon so I put lemon in a half bottle of bleach and sprayed it around all doors and windows. Has definitely slowed them down!

Dansak · 17/07/2015 07:42

I can't bear it. Please don't start posting pictures. Hoping some spindly spiders move in, I can just about cope with that at a distance, its the big running ones that give me nightmares.

BleachEverything · 17/07/2015 07:45

They are everywhere at the moment!

mrstweefromtweesville · 17/07/2015 07:46

Its been spider season here for about three weeks. I thought they were a tad previous, too. But I'm ready.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/07/2015 07:50

Oh blast it. I thought it didn't start until September. God I hate those big fast ones. At least now I have a sofa that I can easily tip over to get to them if they run under it. Hmm I have fly swatters both upstairs and downstairs, ready to use. Grin I am NOT a "catch them and put them outside" person. The spindly spiders don't bother me at all though (they're slow, so that's fine) so I will leave them alone in the hopes that they will eat any other spiders. Fingers crossed.

One of the things I noticed about Australia is that we have a spider upsurge at the same time as in the UK, early autumn, though by what you're saying, it seems early this year.

I only ever see huntsmen in the house, which are quite big and always let them get on with it, having been brought up not to kill a spider as it's bad luck.

On the other hand, I might relax the superstition for red backs and whitetails.:o

castlesintheair · 17/07/2015 07:51

It is definitely true about the cellar spiders. I have actively encouraged them to dwell in my very spidery house and the number of house spiders has definitely decreased. That and spraying regularly round windows and doors with any anti arachnid spray I can get my hands on.

MistressChalk · 17/07/2015 07:53

Every year this fucker turns up in the same place. I'm starting to dread walking into the room and seeing him waiting for me....

I got home yesterday, a sleeping toddler in my arms, opened the front door and there was a spider halfway through making a gigantic web all across the inside on my doorway. It stopped as I opened the door and just sat in the middle of the spave staring at me.

TheTravellingLemon · 17/07/2015 07:57

*space.

L1ttleMissMuffet · 17/07/2015 08:03

I have namcechanged to post this as I have already posted this on Facebook.

This spider had been sat in the corner for about a week, On Wednesday morning I thought she had thunder flies caught in her web but on further inspection it was her Babies Grin

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 17/07/2015 08:47

I have a huge British wolf spider in my bathroom. She came with the house Grin nothing seems to survive very long that wanders into the bathroom. I let her deal with them. She's too old to be fast and just ambles out of her floor hole for a look when disturbed then retreats.

ArtyBat · 17/07/2015 09:05

I've caught this 'little' chap twice in the past week. I've evicted him both times, but he keeps limbo - ing back under the doors.

It's him or me next time!

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 17/07/2015 09:29

Is he missing a leg?! He is not a pretty spider.

paulapompom · 17/07/2015 09:29

Artybat - aaarrrrgghhhhh! Just that.

maybebabybee · 17/07/2015 09:31

Oh my god. Why the pictures. WHY.

I had to deal with a moronic colleague as well who trotted out the old ditty 'it's more scared of you than you are of it' followed by 'you've just been conditioned to be scared of them by the media'.

It's a frigging phobia. I know it's irrational. I know they can't hurt me. I don't want to leap 10 feet in the air every time I see one running across my floor!!

anyway, I refer everyone to this old but good Charlie Brooker article on spiders.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 17/07/2015 09:37

My phobia is ridiculous. Crane fly. Daddy long legs. The stupidest most irrelevant thing out there. And I literally panic and have vomited when they come near me. At least spider phobia is understood by most peopleGrin I get stared at like I'm a total tit

GeekyQueen · 17/07/2015 09:38

YY to slugs at the moment, husband stood on one barefoot last week when making DS some milk, ewwww!!

It seems unreasonably early for spider visitors. I'm not a huge fan but in an effort not to pass my phobia on to DS, I now name them and chat to them. Anything bigger than 50p gets evicted though!

Steben · 17/07/2015 09:39

Why must it be at night?! Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

In also wandering how to encourage those spindly ones into the house.....

chemenger · 17/07/2015 09:46

When we got in the car yesterday a spider had built a huge web between the front seats and was sitting in the middle of it. I'm just thankful it didn't appear while dd (learner, easily distracted) was driving. Hopefully the spider will stay in the garden now.

TheTravellingLemon · 17/07/2015 09:50

L1ttleMissMuffet your picture makes me want to shower in bleach then torch my house.

ghostyslovesheep · 17/07/2015 09:52

I've reported this thread to ask HQ to put a warning in the title - I am very phobic and putting pictures of the fuckers on this thread turned it into something nightmarish for me :(
