Washing hands after nappy change - MIL thread, sorry

My PIL are staying with us at the moment to look after DS, after I have had an operation. I appreciate is is very generous and lovely of them, and I am grateful.

However, MIL isn't washing her hands after pooey nappy changes. AIBU to be bothered by this? How can I get her to do this without basically implying she's being disgusting? We do have hand sanitizer at the nappy change station, but I found she as using that BEFORE she changed his nappy instead of after! DS is 8 months old, just for info, and my operation means I can't lift or carry him, or bend over/ kneel down, so I can't do it myself at the moment.

In my last job that didn't last as a carer in a residential home we were also taught that if we wear new gloves and a new apron for every resident and we weren't dealing with bodily fluids we didn't need to wash hands between each person.

Yoga, I've got a very messy house but it is clean enough and I wash hands a lot.
My mother is obsessed with tidiness and chucks everything away all the time, but she is far less bothered about hand washing and that sort of thing.
One time she was being all superior about my infection control worries when ds1 had a bug. She was being oh so casual and guess who got ill the next day.

Not gloating as that can happen to anyone but I hate it when people behave like germs are just small and crushable and not a threat. When you have first hand experience of a superbug, it gives you a whole new perspective.

Olddear · 15/07/2015 20:56

Yes. My home is clean. But on MN that is always met with 'it's not the 1950's!' And I also am very particular about my laundry. Separate loads/white only washes/ treating stains etc!
And here's something else that will shoot eyebrows up to your hairline.....I shower every morning and bath at night!!!! And I'm not even ashamed to admit it!!

Sallystyle · 15/07/2015 20:56

Clean house here.

ToGrapefruit · 15/07/2015 20:57

OP You've just had an operation. This is not a good time for you to be infected with any bugs that may be passed about your home by your (undeniably kind, lovely, helpful and generous) MIL's lack of hand hygiene.

Could you or your DH make this really clear, by saying that the hospital/ your GP advise handwashing by all family members, especially after nappy changes/ toilet visits- in order that germs are not spread about your house?

(I've had a hospital acquired infection after surgery before and it was hellish. I know you're not in hospital, but I'd still advise being careful hygiene wise. Poo IS full of germs.)

Also, to those who are saying things like 'no one's ever been harmed by my not washing'- how exactly do you know this? I'm an ex-nurse/ care assistant and have seen many, many times how bugs go through wards, nursing homes and beyond. Even with some hand washing...

We got our own gel dispensers to take round with us. And were told not to rely on it and wash your hands the "proper" way every few patients.

I hope all the hand washers do the proper hospital hand-wash, otherwise its a bit pointless too!

LauraChant · 15/07/2015 20:58

I would definitely wash hands after nappies but do not have a nice tidy lovely home!

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:59

Wash your hands properly people!

Yoga no I'm not neat or tidy but basically everything is clean ish and I am a staunch hand washer.

Olddear · 15/07/2015 21:00

I can't help but do the proper hand wash!!! Just as much as I can't help making my bed with hospital corners and putting the pillows on the bed with the pillowcase opening facing away from the door!

Oh maybe just my fam then, who are most deff not the norm anyway.

DH & I have anxiety about the house being spotless, only because of they way we were brought up though, in extremes.

Plus my DGD had several infection in the hospital so for years it's been drummed into us to wash hands & be clean (even my Mum until DGD passed away).

youareallbonkers · 15/07/2015 21:05

And anti b gel isn't enough either imo. Wash them properly you vile lot

yogababymum · 15/07/2015 21:07

MRsDeV I agree. I also have a household with allergies including me. My cleaning can become extreme when I overthink it.

youareallbonkers · 15/07/2015 21:09

Here's an article for you www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2446461/

Im a minger Grin

youareallbonkers · 15/07/2015 21:18

It's nothing to be proud of. You should be ashamed

Chewbecca · 15/07/2015 21:22

I like 2 aspects of cruise ship hygiene measures

  • antibacterial dispensers that auto dispense when you stick you hand under it - no touching
  • tissues to open the bathroom door with (AFTER YOU'VE WASHED YOUR HANDS) with a little bin outside to dispose it in.

Obvs they still have a lot of issues with bugs spreading like wildfire so not everyone seems to manage to follow the rules, but hey, they're good measures. I hate opening the bathroom door at work after I've washed my hands as it's likely to be making them instantly unclean again.

It is bloody disgusting to not wash yiur hands after changing a nappy especially a poo one. Nothing to be proud of.

Pepperonipeteczar · 15/07/2015 21:32

I didnt wash my hands, then I got not one but 2 vomiting bugs that left me bedridden for a few days each and the doctor told me to make sure I wash my hands after changes so I have done ever since

youareallbonkers · 15/07/2015 21:40

What else do you need to be told? Don't forget to put clothes on before you leave the house? Stop at red lights?

bimandbam · 15/07/2015 21:40

I don't always wash my hands after a nappy change.

But I don't.always wash my hands after handling money either which is filthy. Or pushing a trolley. Or opening a public loo door. Or entering my pin number on a card machine.

I wash my hands after using a public loo but not always after using our loos for a wee.

I don't wash my hands after stroking my dog. But I do after stroking someone elses.

I don't wash my hands after sex either.

The only time I have been sick since I was about 5 was when I have been drunk. I have had d. about 4/5 times. Same for 11 year old dd. Who hasn't been sick si ce she was almost 2.

There are lots of filthy things we touch day to day. Having my hands near poo from my toddler is the least of my worries to be honest.

Olddear · 15/07/2015 21:43
