We were away for a wedding recently and stayed in a B&B. They asked what we would like for our cooked breakfast the next morning. I don't eat sausages or bacon so I just said I'd like eggs, mushrooms tomatoes and beans. I got a beans??? Hmm So what do you think Mners? Weird or a nice addition to a cooked breakfast? :)

traditional fry: no hash browns (maybe a few fried potatoes) no beans. no beans. at all. Even though they now appear everywhere. no beans. Beans running into runny eggs is a very bad thing.

Sausage, bacon, black and white pudding, eggs, fried bread (optional), fried tomatoes, toast Everything else an add on.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/07/2015 23:43

It was always tomatoes when I was growing up, but beans do seem to be normal now, both are totally unwelcome on any breakfast plate of mine.

Canyouforgiveher · 14/07/2015 23:43

Giddy, eggs beans and proper chips is a whole different (perfect) meal - for lunch or dinner or comfort. Was our Ash Wednesday and Good Friday dinner - best dinners of the years

bumbleymummy · 14/07/2015 23:44

Cordelia - you have to squish the tomato onto the tattie scone. It's the only way to do it!

Beans are an essential part of a cooked breakfast, but not as essential as black pudding, white pudding, potato bread, and soda bread Grin

bumbleymummy · 14/07/2015 23:47

Agree that eggs, beans and chips are the best comfort food ever. I usually eat them when I get in late from work and everyone else is in bed while watching an episode of Father Ted :)

A fried pancake is an integral part of a fry up, alongside the fried soda farl and potato farl.

bumbleymummy · 14/07/2015 23:48

I can eat a small piece of soda bread but I have to put one of my eggs on it.

Oh - and the mushrooms HAVE to be cooked in butter.

Beans are essential. And tinned plum tomatoes are not in any way an acceptable alternative (looking at you, MIL....).
Ideal fry up would be eggs, beans, mushrooms, sausage, bacon, toast and hash browns (the best bit). With the beans served in a little bean-corral made from the sausage and bacon, so that the eggs and hash browns don't get beany.

CordeliaFoxx · 14/07/2015 23:57

Bumble I don't like it when they go soggy!! Though maybe have to try again!! We live in England and have to make do with Asda "potato cakes", they're not the same. We normally stock up when we get to Scotland, DH is a Weegie

FeelingSmurfy · 14/07/2015 23:59

So many places don't offer them, it rather limits my breakfast as I'm vegetarian and don't eat eggs or mushrooms

bumbleymummy · 14/07/2015 23:59

I don't leave mine long enough to go soggy! Grin

Beans are only to be eaten in one's own home. They have to be served at moulten-lava temperature to be anything like edible.

Fresh tomato (grilled, not any tomato from a tin), eggs, hash browns, mushrooms, toast = a damn fine breakfast

No bacon or sausage because the curly-tail is not eaten in my house.

If you want a good way to eat beans, heat them to ridiculous temperature, put them on toast, completely cover them in cheese, grill, then eat. With caution. Haven't had that for years.

Fatmomma99 · 15/07/2015 00:03

Bumble, you are being v v v effing U. Baked beans are the food of the devil, obviously. Even writing it makes me want to barf. Hideous. Hang you head in shame.

However, you have SLIGHTLY redeemed yourself by only having your mushrooms cooked in butter. If you were feeling posh, I'd also suggest a little bit of crushed garlic. On toast. White. Also spread with butter. If you were clever, the butter from the pan the mushrooms were cooked in. (My dad was in catering)

Most of this thread seems to have been taken over by vegetarians. You're ALL U. Just have a piece of bacon!

Canyouforgiveher · 15/07/2015 00:05

I want eggs beans and chips now

CordeliaFoxx · 15/07/2015 00:10

Bumble maybe that's where I'm going wrong - need to eat faster lol

cruikshank · 15/07/2015 00:12

Beans are lovely. Especially if you fry them in the same pan as the bacon and spoon the bacon fat over them while they're cooking. Yes, I'm not Southern.

CordeliaFoxx · 15/07/2015 00:15

Cruikshank that sounds disgusting and lovely at the same time!

MrsTedCrilly · 15/07/2015 00:15

Love how differently people think about this! I would say beans are essential, but I've had nice ones without them.. It's just odd how they reacted like you were asking for marshmallows with it Grin

cleanmyhouse · 15/07/2015 00:23

maliagrace i thought i was the only person who hated bean juice.

I'm not keen on beans in a fry up, however i do like them with bangers, mash and sweetcorn BUT only if the bean juice has benn drained off with a slotted spoon. I hate bean juice, it permeates everyting.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 15/07/2015 00:30

I'm not a massive fan of baked beans, but I actually like them on a soft fried or poached egg, if pushed to have them in a breakfast type fashion.

Hash browns are awful. Homemade ones can be lovely, but not the mouth-scratching wedges of carb that get served up here.

I don't have any 'it must contain this' breakfast thing; just let it be good quality. Decent, well cured bacon. Free range, well made sausage, bloody nice bread, that kind of thing.

If it's synthetic rubbish, then a bowl of cornflakes is better, frankly.

MadAngryGnome · 15/07/2015 00:52

I think the bean juice is the best bit. Especially when you can soak a crispy hash brown or potato scone in it with a bit of runny yolk.

Smurfingreat · 15/07/2015 01:28

I personally believe that beans are evil and can request their absence in numerous languages. However I am aware that I'm in the minority and other people love the freaky nasty textured orange objects with hideous sauce. So please just give me the choice to enjoy the loveliness of a rare fry up without the pollutant of bean juice!

Allalonenow · 15/07/2015 01:38

Beans have no place with a breakfast fry up, eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding, white pudding, mushrooms, potato cake. Fried bread is a good addition too, but no tinned tomatoes. Must be served with boiling hot strong tea.
