....to ask how long your commute is?

have recently lost my job (redundancy) and was literally working around the corner.

I can only work certain part time hours due to having caring responsibilities and had a job interview last Wednesday. I got offered the job on Friday (hours are perfect with a good pay) and would like to take it.

my mum and DP have concerns that the commute (about 9 miles and 30-40 min each way by car) will be too stressful. I am sure I will be fine.

so just wondered - how long/far do you commute to work and is it a strain?

Is the drive definitely no more than 40 minutes usually, Chocno?
On a Sunday or weekday leaving by 6:45 am I can get to work in under 40 minutes, but any other time the drive is closer to an hour & very stressful. I take the train & cycle instead, usually.

Oh, and the morning commuters are completely insane. I've never seen such chronic dodgy overtaking except at 6:50am type time.

FrancesNiadova · 12/07/2015 13:37

Mine is 50 minutes on single track roads, busy dual carriageway, then into a Victorian-streeted town. It is a long way, but it could be worse!

dontrunwithscissors · 12/07/2015 13:38

20-25 mins, except for between 8.15-8.45 and 5.05-5.30, when it can be up to 40 mins at the worst. It's 6 miles. That's in a car. The bus takes an hour.

Szeli · 12/07/2015 13:54

2 - 2.5hrs each way. It's very annoying as it used to be less than 5mins. I'm always tired

Layde · 12/07/2015 13:56

I live about 13 miles from work. It takes about 1/2 hour to get there. However, in rush hour, it's easily 45 mins or more. I tend to go down the back lanes to avoid the worst of the queues.

40 Mins, 3 miles! London commute should walk it really Wink

Wineandrosesagain · 12/07/2015 14:33

Two and a half hours each way, so five hours a day. I travel to London but I only go three or four days a week. I leave home ridiculously early and leave work at four-ish so that I can be home before DD's bedtime. I am knackered and will be moving jobs soon.

The second half of my commute is London Bridge - Piccadilly Circus which I normally do as a walk along the South Bank & through Trafalgar Square. It's the most entertaining commute EVER.

Nile Rodgers busking, random giant animals, even more random colourful mirror mazes, guerrilla huggers, adult bouncy castles, free flowers, free pizzas, free juices... Love it.

Getthewonderwebout · 12/07/2015 15:00

It used to be a 2 hour (each way) journey, involving a car, two buses, a train and a tube. It was a hellish journey, which I did for 9 years.

It's now 6 minutes by car.

WhatsTheT · 12/07/2015 15:07

Just over an hour, 2 busses, 2 walks. 40 mins in a car seems like a doddle and much less faff than most people.

Sidalee7 · 12/07/2015 17:14

1 hour 15 walk/overground/walk

Not stressful, I enjoy the walk and read on the train.

basicbitch · 12/07/2015 18:21

I used to commute an hour and a half each way via public transport (bus and train) to a job I hated. The commute made me miserable. I realised how much when I started lift sharing, which cut the journey down to 45 minutes each way, door to door. The difference in my quality of life was palpable. I think 30-40 mins in car sounds fine. You'll be fine OP!
