....to ask how long your commute is?

have recently lost my job (redundancy) and was literally working around the corner.

I can only work certain part time hours due to having caring responsibilities and had a job interview last Wednesday. I got offered the job on Friday (hours are perfect with a good pay) and would like to take it.

my mum and DP have concerns that the commute (about 9 miles and 30-40 min each way by car) will be too stressful. I am sure I will be fine.

so just wondered - how long/far do you commute to work and is it a strain?

Half an hour each way . No bother.

manchestermummy · 12/07/2015 10:21

Mine is 9 miles, takes 20 minutes on a good day; 35 on a bad one. I work in a town that everyone generally wishes to leave so am always going against the traffic, plus I go on quiet A roads plus a few miles on a dual carriageway that seldom sees queues.

I have one of the longer commutes at among my colleagues.

londonrach · 12/07/2015 10:21

Seriously that distance and time is not bad. I range from 10 mins to an hour...

Ludways · 12/07/2015 10:27

20 minutes and I dropped ds to school on the way, it's great.

If I had a bit more if a commute I'd prefer public transport so I could read or listen to some music, I'd use it as a little me time.

At the moment 5 mins, in the past over an hour, bus and train, you just get on with it though, it never crossed my mind that it was a problem.

gamingmum · 12/07/2015 10:44

Two hour commute here, fifteen min walk to train, hour on the train if no delays but with London Bridge atm delays every day. Then a 45 min walk along the Thames. When pregnant the journey would take me two an a half hours so I spent five hours a day commuting to work seven hours.

dustyovaries · 12/07/2015 10:45

Mine is 45 mins each way and i hate it. The traffic is very unpredictable in the morning so it can take up to 1hr 15 mins in the winter. I will be looking for a job closer to home once my mat leave is over.

SmokyJoe · 12/07/2015 10:48

40 minutes and that's with dropping dd at nursery.

SmokyJoe · 12/07/2015 10:48

40 minutes each way

SexNamesRFab · 12/07/2015 10:51

Grab that job! I've just cut my commute from 1hr to 45 mins (London) and am really pleased. You've just been made redundant, which can be a real knock, and you've picked yourself up and scored what sounds like a great new role. It's not fair of your mum & DP to put doubts in your mind. Even if you decide you don't like the commute, you'd have another role on your CV and be more confident about your own ability to find work and fit in somewhere new. Well done Flowers

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 12/07/2015 11:00

An hour each way. Walk to the station and catch train, get off train and connect to another train, get off that train and walk.

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 12/07/2015 11:54

When I work in Office A: 1hr15 min drive each way
When I work in Office B: 20mins on the bus each way.

Whathaveilost · 12/07/2015 11:55

4 minutes if I drive, 15 if I cycle.

dreamcometrue · 12/07/2015 12:09

10mins by car or 35mins walking (2.5 miles) I know I'm very lucky.

Dh has gone from 30 mins to 20 and now it takes 7 mins

MadAsgardian · 12/07/2015 12:15

I recently went from a 10 minute drive to an hour, five days a week plus an earlier start.

I found it tiring at first but now I have adjusted I relaid the peace and quiet!!

cookiemonster100 · 12/07/2015 12:15

90 mins each way. I do it because it's PT & at my career level. Plus I love my job, & get a good work life balance so I suck up the commute.

irie · 12/07/2015 12:18

That commute sounds lovely! Mines 1hr- 1hr15, walk train tube walk

Purplepoodle · 12/07/2015 12:28

I'd try it. Worst comes to worse u can look for something else whilst still earning.

4EverScottish · 12/07/2015 12:34

About 3 minutes, unless I need to put my coat on first, then it's 5 minutes.

PickleSarnie · 12/07/2015 12:41

90 miles each way. Walk, train, tube, walk. Not has hideously long as you'd think though for the distance. 1.5 hours each way. Always get a seat.

Totality22 · 12/07/2015 12:42

I did an hour each way for 10 years... It was on public transport and I read a lot of books.

I'm on ML but current office is 20 minutes walk away.

intheenddotcom · 12/07/2015 12:44

32 miles each way which takes 50 mins-hour depending on time of day.

I used to commute 2 hours which wasn't doable but 1hr-1:30 is.

MadameJosephine · 12/07/2015 12:48

I live 10 miles from work but driving time varies between 20 and 40 minutes depending upon the time of day. I wouldn't like to commute much further than that though

Littleen · 12/07/2015 12:53

Congrats! I'd say that's a really good commute :)
