....to ask how long your commute is?

have recently lost my job (redundancy) and was literally working around the corner.

I can only work certain part time hours due to having caring responsibilities and had a job interview last Wednesday. I got offered the job on Friday (hours are perfect with a good pay) and would like to take it.

my mum and DP have concerns that the commute (about 9 miles and 30-40 min each way by car) will be too stressful. I am sure I will be fine.

so just wondered - how long/far do you commute to work and is it a strain?

1 second - my house is separated from work by a connecting door!

elderflowergin · 12/07/2015 09:15

I work 12 miles away which takes 30 mins to drive in the middle of the day but takes me about 50 minutes to do to get there for 9. I can't go earlier to miss the traffic because breakfast club for dd starts at 8. Am hoping it will be quieter and take less time in the school hols. Once I have started work I then drive for between 1-2 hours in the day, I always try to make my last appointment near to home when possible so I don't have to go back to the office then drive 50 mins home. I would have said up to an hour commute is totally normal these days, and anyone restricting the, selves to less would be restricting their job opportunities ?!

ilovesooty · 12/07/2015 09:16

Job Centre Plus expect job seekers to apply for anything with up to an hour and a half commute.

froggyjump · 12/07/2015 09:17

7 miles, through town - about 25 - 30 minutes

turkeyboots · 12/07/2015 09:17

When I go into the office it takes about 2hr each way in the train. Work in London and would be much longer if I drove.

Themoleandcrew · 12/07/2015 09:20

Until recently it was 1hr 30mins by tube. Now it's a blissful 5 min walk followed by 9 min tube. Well worth the wait.

sooperdooper · 12/07/2015 09:24

About 45mins on two buses but I don't mind it really.

If be quite annoyed if it was me that they think a 9mile journey is too stressful for you, why? Do you drive? Will it be public transport? Even if it is, like mine it's not stressful tbh, only a bit annoying if it's raining!

chocnomorechoc · 12/07/2015 09:29

DP and mum mean well. one of the childre. is severely disabled and I am the main carer so I have a bit more on my plate than most mums. DP works long hours.

thanks for the replies. all very reassuring Smile

I'm just about to start a new job 15 miles away from home. I've worked out it should take about an hour. Car journey, tram and then walk. Previously I haven't had more than a 10 minute walk to work so will all be a bit different. However, childcare isn't an issue as I finish 2 hours before school pick up so the pressure isn't there.

ByTheSea · 12/07/2015 09:42

40 miles each way 5 days a week by car

TheHumanSatsuma · 12/07/2015 09:42

I work 15 miles away, takes me around 30 minutes by car. Tried it by public transport once. Took an hour and 45 minutes.

ByTheSea · 12/07/2015 09:42

I use Waze to avoid traffic and usually make it in about an hour

chippednailvarnish · 12/07/2015 09:44

An hour (walk and 2 tubes)

TinyMonkey · 12/07/2015 09:48

Mine is great, I either have a 10mins walk, 20mins tube, 10mins walk or 40mins cycling.

LIZS · 12/07/2015 10:02

As long as your hours enable you to travel with time to spare and you could get home readily in an emergency it should be fine. Are they perhaps more concerned that you will need them as back up more frequently?

Mia1415 · 12/07/2015 10:05

60 miles each way, so between 4-5 hours a day & yes that is tiring (& extreme). But up to an hour commute each way I would (personally) think fine

SinglePringle · 12/07/2015 10:07

Varies (freelancer so different locations) but mostly an hour / hour and a half door to door, public transport into Central London.

Take 20 mins from my front door to Town and then around 40 mins tube and walking.

30-45 mins by car depends on traffic

susiedaisy · 12/07/2015 10:10

Meant to add that's each way

workadurka · 12/07/2015 10:12

My work is 3.5 miles away and can easily take 30 mins to drive or even up to an hour on the (crappy) bus. Walking takes an hour.

StaircaseAtTheUniversity · 12/07/2015 10:14

40-50 minutes in the car. It's only 6 miles but they're London miles and most of that outside of the A12 is spent doing 15 mph.

TattieHowkerz · 12/07/2015 10:14

Between 40 mins and an hour each way, depending on the traffic.

It is fine. DP does a lot of the morning stuff though. I usually leave with everyone still asleep.

MustBeThursday · 12/07/2015 10:19

Current "commute" - 30 min on foot, which I love as is my downtime between work and picking up DD.

Previously, 1.5 to 2 hrs by train, tram and foot, occasionally with bus thrown in... which I found crowded and stressful.

WhimsicalTwattery · 12/07/2015 10:19

My commute to my office is about 8 miles, but it's at rush hour through a town so takes anywhere between 45mins to an hour.
I drive to different locations throughout the day, 20 miles a day on average. I try to start and finish my working day at a location nearer to my house. The only days I HAVE to be in the office are Tuesday afternoons and Fridays.
