To think people name their dogs the name they'd have liked if they'd had more DC?

I keep seeing it among people at the school gates.....or just people I know. "Oh we've called the new Puppy Ella."

"The new dog is called Lola/Max/Poppy..."

It's odd and annoying as I've now met two families who;se dogs share names with my kids! My kids names are not in the above selection

I like daft names for pets. Our cats are named after a physicist and a norse God. Surely the fun in naming a pet is that you can give it a name that you wouldn't give to a person?

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/07/2015 15:38

I think so. Or a title. Lady Pemberton-Smythe would be a good name for a cat.

paulapompom · 11/07/2015 15:59

I was allowed to name two of my (six ) cats, and chose Foxy and Bambi, which I think I lovely names, but my daughters think sound like playboy models. I don't care, the cats are macho enough to carry it off!!

jeanswithatwist · 11/07/2015 16:03

Spot on op. I couldn't have a second child so called my cat a name I might have called it had I have had another. However, I didn't fancy calling the cat a standard cat name such as tiddles

steff13 · 11/07/2015 16:20

My dog is Daisy, which I never would have used for a child.

villainousbroodmare · 11/07/2015 16:39

My dog is Shane and cat is Emer, either of which names I'd have used for kids.
I think pets' names very much reflect the role they play within households, so Chloes are uber-cosseted and will certainly bite, Toms are good-natured, Babys are the surrogate infants of the unimaginative, Maxes and Bens are solid citizens, and Rovers and Blackies are likely to sleep outside.

paddypants13 · 11/07/2015 18:05

My three rescue dogs all had human names when I adopted them and I did seriously consider giving DS one of the names - Sam(uel). I would say that Sam is a common name for dogs and people!

We now have a cat named after the midwife who delivered DD! It's the perfect name for a cat but rare for women.

ihave2naughtydogs · 11/07/2015 18:17

M dog is called Cindy, I would not use it for a daughter but its a nice name for my pooch Smile

RunningJumpingClimbingTrees · 11/07/2015 18:25

My cat is called tess and wouldn't have used that for my daughter.....my rabbits were called sparkle, bushy and patchy which could be good for next one if lucky enough to have another.

husband has a colleague with a cat named Steve Grin

StarsInTheNightSky · 11/07/2015 18:28

Hahaha, no way in our case, we have a Mokoto, Saren and Cinnabar for our three rescue dogs, they weren't on my names list for DS Grin.

Hushabyelullaby · 11/07/2015 18:33

My dog is called 'Cooper' after the car, Mini (in fact before we ever got him we did have a cat called Mini - again, because of the car). We would never have called a child that, but I did meet a woman a year ago whose little boy was called Cooper (assuming not because of the car! I never told her our dog was named that).

My mum's cat was called Cori (actually Coriander, but shortened to that)

Shockers · 11/07/2015 18:36

I named my puppy after a 70s song about a dog. Jamie Oliver named his DD (middle name) after the same song, it would seem Grin.

Olddear · 11/07/2015 18:39

I know someone who has a cat called Margaret.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 11/07/2015 18:56

I remember seeing two women in a park, both calling "Milo!". A dog and a toddler came running up, practically side by side.

Lara2 · 11/07/2015 19:04

Not sure Buster or Sparkle featured on my baby name lists Grin

blink1552 · 11/07/2015 19:06

Yup! Cat has a name we would both love for a child but can't use because it's comedic with our surname.

AlistairSim · 11/07/2015 19:39

We let the children name our French Bulldog.

Elizabeth Opal Leaf.

Known to all and sundry as Betty, which DS assures me is the most beautiful name in the world.

BathshebaDarkstone · 11/07/2015 19:46

My DA had a dog named after my DM. I think DM was quite insulted! Grin

Raahh · 11/07/2015 19:46

My dog is sort of named what DD2 would have been- if she had been a boy. The dog is called Ike, a short form of Isaac Grin

I had a rabbit called Brian, and a fish called Desmond- neither were potential names for my offspringGrin

Strokethefurrywall · 11/07/2015 19:52

Nah, I have 2 shepherd mixes, Elvis and a Frank, neither of which I would have gotten away with calling my kids.

HoldenCaulfield80 · 11/07/2015 20:00

I used to teach a kid who had a dog named Mark. Perhaps this is why...

Mrsderekshepard · 11/07/2015 20:03

My new dog will be named Bruce but it's not a name I would ever call one of my children Grin

Bahh · 11/07/2015 20:05

I LOVE human names for animals!

I've had (in various furry forms) a Harriet, an Arthur, a Henry, a Nancy and a Claudia.

Wouldn't have used any of them for babies.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/07/2015 20:09

Not the case for me, my two dogs were about well before my 4 week old baby was.

I do chuckle calling one of my dogs names in public, it's one of those where 3 other dogs and 4 little girls turn round Grin

jammypuddingmonkey · 11/07/2015 20:11

My dogs both have people names, but not names I'd have named a child. One of my dogs is named a shorter name for another pet we used to have. Other dog has two names, second isn't a person name.

My cats have pet type names.

We've had a lot of small pets over the years, some had proper names, some not. I'm leaning towards naming female pets names we'd have called girls now we're definitely never having any more dc... But the majority of our pets have been male or already named! All the names I'd never have called dc, you can get away with, with a pet!

My dd has a name a lot of cats seem to have Grin but it's a very pretty name!
