To think people name their dogs the name they'd have liked if they'd had more DC?

I keep seeing it among people at the school gates.....or just people I know. "Oh we've called the new Puppy Ella."

"The new dog is called Lola/Max/Poppy..."

It's odd and annoying as I've now met two families who;se dogs share names with my kids! My kids names are not in the above selection

I would never call my dc Fatboy Greedykins. Suits my cat though.Grin

x2boys · 11/07/2015 09:05

i,m not going to have anymore children and have two boys we are contemplating getting a dog if it was a girl dog i would like to call it a pretty girls name!

Getthewonderwebout · 11/07/2015 09:05

Our dog is called Trevor. That name was definitely not on the list. It suits the dog, wouldn't suit the child.

Totality22 · 11/07/2015 09:06

I did things the other way round.

My cat is called Amber, fast forward 7 years and I am starting threads on here such as "can I name my DD after my cat?"

I didn't

TigerWhoCameForGin · 11/07/2015 09:09

My dog is called Dave.

So no Grin

FyreFly · 11/07/2015 09:11

Whilst I concede that my current two have human names (though I wouldn't want to call my child either, they're named after characters out of Wodehouse!), previous dogs have been called ziggy, dash and lady. I have never felt the slightest urge to call a child any of those.

BlueBananas · 11/07/2015 09:18

The only condition I had when we were naming our dog was that she didn't sound like a 3rd child
She's called Minnie...a woman at school has just named her baby Minnie!
I agree that people are calling their children dog names more these days rather than the other way round

MrsGlam · 11/07/2015 09:21

I don't have children yet, but my dog is called Eric.. Not something I would name my children... I love human names for dogs over doggy names....
Dave as mentioned earlier is awesome!

rosy71 · 11/07/2015 09:28

Surely animals have always been given human names as well as traditional animal ones? What's more strange is when children have names which sound like animal ones. We had a dog called Monty; since then, I've come across several baby Montys.

I did once know a cat called Colin. That was quite funny!

Hoppinggreen · 11/07/2015 09:29

I called DS after my childhood dog - he's called Spot Hoppinggreen!!!
Not really it is a human name

Dowser · 11/07/2015 09:34

My girl cats had pretty names Annabelle , Sophie and Mitzi . The boys had butch names Arthur and Harry Pusser .We had two kittens that died called Oscar and Samson.

I probably would name all of my mythological children any of those names.

cosytoaster · 11/07/2015 09:35

Sorry OP, another one here that doesn't fit your theory - my dog's called Alan! Definitely would not have used it for a DS.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/07/2015 09:35

My DC have names which my FIL considers to be "Dogs' Names"

Two of my cars had the names I had set aside for my future DSs (my cars are always male)

I don't have a dog (though the cats had human namrs) and 4 out of 6 of our guinea-pigs had/have human names.

CordeliaFrost · 11/07/2015 09:42

Someone who lives near us has a cat named Sarah, which has always made me giggle, as it doesn't sound like a pet name.

I know people with pets named things like Molly, Jake, Ruby, Alfie, Charlie and Poppy, and they all work on pets (as well as humans).

Sarah just doesn't sound pet-like. Sarah the cat is lovely though!

Notso · 11/07/2015 09:44

We wanted to call our ds Oscar but both sets of parents didn't like it.

In the nicest possible way surely it's none of their beeswax! I don't think my parents liked any of my DC's names when I first pitched them, but they've had their turn at naming with me and DSIS so they didn't have to.

HoneyDragon · 11/07/2015 09:44

I'm not having more DC, so I named the Labrador HullyGully.

I know Notso but we had "that's a dogs name" and "oh it reminds me of Oscar Wilde" with disapproving looks! It was easier to go with our second choice.

TheWernethWife · 11/07/2015 09:53

My best dog (now deceased) was called Eddie, I also knew a cat called Dave. Friends pug is called Colin - he is so cute.

GatoNaranja · 11/07/2015 09:56

Grin I was thinking exactly this recently. Our dog's name is however just a leetle bit tool cool and not quite classic enough for an actual human child of ours so it would definitely be on the fantasy list!

Walkingonsunshine00 · 11/07/2015 09:57

Definitely didn't want to call my child Shep!

ZaZathecat · 11/07/2015 10:03

Honeydragon Grin I wonder if there are any pets out there named after MNers?

DejaVuAllOverAgain · 11/07/2015 11:19

It never occurred to me to name my children Panda ConfusedWink

A friend of mine has a dog named Oscar.

ENormaSnob · 11/07/2015 11:31

Guilty as charged.

Dpup has the name that ds3 would have had if he was a girl Grin

HicDraconis · 11/07/2015 11:40

No - the dogs definitely have doggy names that I would never saddle a child with :) Domino and Velvet. The cat is called Paige which apparently is a girl's name - she came from the SPCA though, so we didn't choose that one. I wouldn't have called any DDs that either.
