A friend just posted the following:

AIBU to wonder why the hell it is still being sold? There are countless similar stories all over the net. Does a child have to die before anyone will take action?

Similar thing happened with my DD1 in 2010 at around 4-5 months old I think- having a bit of tummy time in her cot, I was in the same room putting clothes away and she somehow contrived to get a leg stuck in her throat (possibly she head butted it? I was facing the other way). I had to dislodge it. Scared me silly. Needless to say we haven't used it as a tummy time toy/car toy for the subsequent 2 DCs but keep it for when sitting on an adult lap. I think we emailed the company. When we googled, various similar incidents came up - so I agree that it's perfectly possible. Rare, yes. Unlikely, yes- but it doesn't hurt to be aware that it's possible.

Sorry - that was a search about the recall when I meant to post this one which is more relevant.

Damnautocorrect · 09/07/2015 15:47

My son choked when he shoved his hand down his throat once.
He was teething and didn't have a Sophie.

sheswallowedafly · 09/07/2015 15:48

Thank you Miggly - I tend to think even a single incident like this is one too many where a baby is concerned...and there have been many with this particular teether.

Ridicule away...

Sounds like gagging rather than choking. Not nice but not life threatening surely?

Last summer when we went to the commonwealth games party in Glasgow Green we had to put our bags through the X-ray machine at the security gates to save us pulling everything out for inspection. DD1 was about 8 months at the time and the guy on the machine asked us "what's with all the fucking giraffes?!" - every second changing bag they'd scanned had one. Grin Surely if something that ubiquitous was so dangerous we'd have heard more about it than one mum's blogpost?

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 09/07/2015 15:51

Did you use the wrong link? because that recall wasnt one, and it was to do with the chemical composition of the plastic, nothing to do with any supposed choking risk.

So its still the one account, on an anonymous webpage written by the OP vs over 30 million sold in 54 years of sales and no official complaints? Hmmm, who to believe, one or thirty million.....?

sheswallowedafly · 09/07/2015 15:55

Blue and limp = choking not gagging.

soloula I know someone who was working as security at the games - there are some beautiful anecdotes about the contents of people's bags Grin!

Ha ha I can imagine sheswallowedafly!

sheswallowedafly · 09/07/2015 15:57

Yes, wrong link Winter, sorry. This is the one I meant to post.

My step daughter had one of these. We never left her alone with it.

She choked on a bit of carrot. Should I have written a hysterical blog post about that?

sparechange · 09/07/2015 16:01

I'm not sure that second link does much better, given that the first hit is a list of why fears around Sophie are 'unfounded' and there has not been a single product recall.

So I'm still waiting for the evidence of the 'volumes of chocking reports' about Sophie that your thread title mentioned.
So far we've had one, un-dated, un-named mention from a blog (which seems to have been referenced back in 2012) and zero evidence of any injuries of deaths...

sheswallowedafly · 09/07/2015 16:02

Ok, if nobody has actually died then that's fine. Going blue and limp as a result of teething (on a teether) is perfectly acceptable than and IA clearly BU! Thanks all for so eloquently putting me right.

Epilepsyhelp · 09/07/2015 16:04

Hilarious that you think other posters are being 'narky' - shocking lack of self awareness.

You wrote a massively over exaggerated title and OP now you're trying to back it up by accusing posters of being blasé about babies dying. Nice.

LaurieMarlow · 09/07/2015 16:07

No major incidents, no product recalls, nothing to see here, bit puzzled as to why the OP has such a bee in her bonnet about this particular manufacturer.

But that's AIBU for you.

sparechange · 09/07/2015 16:07

But as other's have pointed out, babies have choked and gone blue from their fingers, bits of food, the corner of their blankets
Sophie isn't dangerous. Leaving your small newborn unsupervised is.

Your original post was hysterical enough, but you are really going over the top trying to defend a total non-issue

givemushypeasachance · 09/07/2015 16:14

The top website result on your second link specifically debunks the should be recalled argument - concluding: "The Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Infant Teething Toy has been sold over 30 million times, throughout the world for over fifty years. There exist a relatively few reports of choking caused by the giraffe teether, so be sure and supervise your infant (always!), and consider a different teething toy if you are concerned."

You just trying to promote this blog which is probably youRs. yes you are histerical and boring..

sheswallowedafly · 09/07/2015 16:33

Think that was in the set of search results I mistakenly posted the first the thumbwitch. It's an interesting read - the choking risk is acknowledged but not considered serious enough to recall the product. Having helped resuscitate a choking baby I just can't feel ok about that.

But let the character assassination continue, possibly my own fault for posting in AIBU!

sheswallowedafly · 09/07/2015 16:34

Spelling, 2MuchLove, holy crap :-o!

OP posts:
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/07/2015 16:40

Oh I wasn't character assassinating you. I have a baby who stops breathing of his own accord, passes out and doesn't restart breathing immediately - bloody terrifying! and that's without anything to choke him. It's fun. Not.

Facebook has been a flurry recently with Sophie Giraffe public service announcements. Someone's out to get the French!
